Book excerpt: Les avantages d'une excitation à la résonance électronique sont présentés après un bref rappel des propriétés essentielles de la DRASC et des travaux effectués dans ce domaine au cours des dernières années. Les raies de diffusion Raman cohérente sont considérablement amplifiées par la résonance, ce qui permet d'augmenter la spécificité des mesures et par exemple de détecter des composants à l'état de traces dans un mélange gazeux. En examinant l'expression de la susceptibilité du troisième ordre Χ(3) (- ωA, ωL, ωL, - ωS), on a pu sélectionner les contributions les plus importantes et les classer. Sur chacun de ces termes, on montre que plusieurs dénominateurs peuvent être amenés en résonance simultanée par un choix judicieux des fréquences laser. On obtient ainsi des doubles ou des triples résonances suivant les molécules analysées. Les positions, les profils et les intensités des raies d'un spectre de DRASC à la résonance sont ensuite étudiés dans le cas général puis dans le cas particulier du radical C2. Le spectromètre DRASC dont les caractéristiques ont été améliorées dans le cadre de cette thèse est présenté en détail dans le chapitre VI. Dans un premier temps, nous avons effectué l'étude de l'iode en phase vapeur à des températures situées entre 30 et 45° C. Les spectres ont été enregistrés pour différentes pressions d'air dans la cuve (entre 2 et 1000 mb). Dans l'ensemble, cette série d'expériences a confirmé la plupart des prévisions théoriques. Nous avons ensuite entrepris l'étude d'un milieu instable et du radical C2 en particulier. Ce dernier a été détecté dans une décharge micro-onde et dans le dard d'un chalumeau oxyacétylénique. La résonance électronique a été obtenue en accordant les lasers dans le système de Swan. Les spectres de DRASC de C2 ont été interprétés grâce aux données spectroscopiques extraites de l'étude de spectres d'émission enregistrés par ailleurs. Des simulations numériques ont été calculées en tenant compte de l'élargissement Doppler des raies de DRASC. Le seuil de détection obtenu dans C2 est voisin de 1010 cm−3. Ce gain spectaculaire en sensibilité est attribuable en partie aux moments de transition élevés des bandes de Swan. Nos espoirs concernant l'amélioration de la détectivité à la résonance électronique ont donc été largement confirmés.

The body of knowl edqe of the vibrational infrared and Raman spectra of molecules is immense and is now so well organized and understood that it is found to be represented in any stan dard upper level undergraduate curriculum in chemistry. The rotational energies of a molecule and quantitative details about its structure can only be obtained through the techniques of microwave, and high-resolution infrared and Raman spectroscopy of low pressure gases and vapors. The results of such investigations are of interest . not only to the academic scientists, but also to scientists and engineers who are active in applied fields of chemistry and physics, as well as the atmospheric sciences. This book deals with basic investigations of the Raman scattering of light by gases, with some attention also being given to liquid substances. After a brief in troductory chapter that delineates the historical development of Raman spectroscopy of gases, high-resolution rotation-vibrational and pure rotational Raman spectros copy is described in Chapters 2 and 3. The all-important intensity parameter, the Raman scattering cross section, is treated in Chapter 4, while the broadening of Raman lines due to the effects of intermolecular forces is taken up in Chapter 5.
