Book Global Fragments

Download or read book Global Fragments written by Anke Bartels and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the world seems to be getting ever smaller and globalization has become the ubiquitous buzz-word, regionalism and fragmentation also abound. This might be due to the fact that, far from being the alleged production of cultural homogeneity, the global is constantly re-defined and altered through the local. This tension, pervading much of contemporary culture, has an obvious special relevance for the new varieties of English and the literature published in English world-wide. Postcolonial literatures exist at the interface of English as a hegemonic medium and its many national, regional and local competitors that transform it in the new English literatures. Thus any exploration of a globalization of cultures has to take into account the fact that culture is a complex field characterized by hybridization, plurality, and difference. But while global or transnational cultures may allow for a new cosmopolitanism that produces ever-changing, fluid identities, they do not give rise to an egalitarian 'global village' - an asymmetry between centre and periphery remains largely intact, albeit along new parameters. The essays collected in this volume offer readings of literary, theoretical, and filmic texts from the postcolonial world. These texts are read as attempts to articulate the global with the local from a perspective of immersion in the actual diversity of life-worlds, focusing on such issues as consumption, identity-politics, and modes of affiliation. In this sense, they are global fragments: locally refractured figurations of an experience of world-wide interconnectedness.

Book The Routledge Handbook of German Language Teaching

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of German Language Teaching written by Ruth Whittle and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of German Language Teaching evaluates and addresses multifaceted, multilevel needs of students and teachers within teaching German as a foreign, as well as a second, language through taking a transcultural approach. Each contribution starts with the author situating themselves in the geographical and institutional context in which they teach as well as the way in which they teach, for example, in person or online. This acknowledges the Handbook’s internationally widespread contributors, from countries with different histories in terms of cultural, linguistic and educational diversity more generally and the teaching of German in particular. The chapters reflect their voices and consider language learners as people who have their own identities. Material such as plays, poems, short literary texts, rap, singing and drawing are discussed in this book as being influential for language learners from beginner level and beyond. This book proposes that ‘learning’ happens by both the teachers and the learners going on a journey and both changing the outlook on each other and themselves along that journey. Alongside this, questions are asked with respect to curricula and the relation between speaking German and ‘belonging’ in a German-speaking country. This Handbook will primarily appeal to teachers and instructors of German, as well as those training to become German language instructors. Moreover, the book will appeal to researchers interested in the linguistic and theoretical aspects of German language teaching.

Book The vignette as an exercise in perception

Download or read book The vignette as an exercise in perception written by Evi Agostini and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2023-01-16 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedagogical work requires the willingness to engage with new situations and with people in their diversity. This book does not offer any simple recipes, but a gentle approach to important steps towards professionalisation in the teaching profession. These lead via an open attitude of perception and the inclusion of corporeality to an insight into how learning and teaching processes can be understood in a new or different way. With vignettes and examples from different pedagogical fields, the theoretical concepts are presented and reflected on their application. The book contains an English-language and a Greek-language version.

First of all, it contributes to the widening of the canon as it focuses on Ugandan childrens fiction. Secondly, the research connects to the few empirical studies that exist in the field. Book The New Education in Europe

Download or read book The New Education in Europe written by Frederick William Roman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1924, as outlined in the preface, this book is "based on the belief that the only substantial hope of rescue in the present world-crisis and the saving of even civilization itself depend upon the degree to which the creative thought that the coming generations may bring is applied to a continued and purposeful reconstruction of the modes of living. The world is in need, as never before, of stronger and more clearly-conceived ideals of conscious effort in the service of humanity. The salvation of society must be mined out of its own depths. Much of this work must be done by those now at school, and therefore we are at once led to inquire to what extent the present systems of education provide for conditions that are provocative of free and spontaneous thought." "In each of the several countries with which the present study is concerned there is a considerable body of men and women who have undertaken a serious and thoughtful campaign of education. The pages that follow attempt to give a summary account of the origin and the likelihood of success of these several undertakings."

  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2022-10-03
  • ISBN : 3110796147
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Kant s Theory of Value written by Christoph Horn and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In explicit form, Kant does not speak that much about values or goods. The reason for this is obvious: the concepts of ‘values’ and ‘goods’ are part of the eudaimonistic tradition, and he famously criticizes eudaimonism for its flawed ‘material’ approach to ethics. But he uses, on several occasions, the traditional teleological language of goods and values. Especially in the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant develops crucial points on this conceptual basis. Furthermore, he implicitly discusses issues of conditional and unconditional values, subjective and objective values, aesthetic or economic values etc. In recent Kant scholarship, there has been a controversy on the question how moral and nonmoral values are related in Kant’s account of human dignity. This leads to the more fundamental problem if Kant should be seen as a prescriptvist (antirealist) or as subscribing to a more objective rational agency account of goods. This issue and several further questions are addressed in this volume.
