Book The History of Spanish Inquisition The Complete Four Volume Edition

Download or read book The History of Spanish Inquisition The Complete Four Volume Edition written by Henry Charles Lea and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-12-10 with total page 1792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the best-known works by the American historian Henry Charles Lea. The Spanish Inquisition (officially known as the "Tribunal of the Holy Office of the Inquisition") was established in 1478 by Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile. It was intended to maintain Catholic orthodoxy in their kingdoms and to replace the Medieval Inquisition, which was under Papal control. It became the most substantive of the three different manifestations of the wider Catholic Inquisition along with the Roman Inquisition and Portuguese Inquisition. The Inquisition was originally intended primarily to identify heretics among those who converted from Judaism and Islam to Catholicism. The regulation of the faith of newly converted Catholics was intensified after the royal decrees issued in 1492 and 1502 ordering Muslims and Jews to convert to Catholicism or leave Castile. The Inquisition was not definitively abolished until 1834, during the reign of Isabella II, after a period of declining influence in the preceding century. The Spanish Inquisition is often cited in popular literature and history as an example of religious intolerance and repression.

Book excerpt: "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'An encyclopedist of the dark ages: Isidore of Seville', Ernest Brehaut delves into the life and work of Isidore of Seville, a prominent figure in early medieval scholarship. Brehaut meticulously explores Isidore's contributions as an encyclopedist, focusing on his most famous work, the 'Etymologiae'. The book provides a thorough analysis of Isidore's literary style and the historical context in which he wrote, shedding light on his influence on later scholars and the preservation of knowledge in the dark ages. Brehaut's scholarly approach offers a deep understanding of Isidore's significance in the intellectual history of the early medieval period. By examining Isidore's work in detail, Brehaut demonstrates the importance of studying the writings of lesser-known figures in shaping our understanding of the past. 'An encyclopedist of the dark ages: Isidore of Seville' is a must-read for those interested in medieval scholarship, intellectual history, and the preservation of knowledge in challenging times.

Book The Correspondence of Lord Acton and Richard Simpson Volume 3

Download or read book The Correspondence of Lord Acton and Richard Simpson Volume 3 written by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton Baron Acton and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1975-07-10 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Acton (1834-1902) and Richard Simpson (1820-76) were the principal figures in the Liberal Catholic movement of nineteenth-century England, an ultimately unsuccessful effort to reconcile the Roman Catholic Church with the leading secular thought of the day. They collaborated in editing the Rambler (1858-62) and the Home and Foreign Review (1862-4), two of the most distinguished Catholic periodicals of the period. The correspondence is the record of this collaboration and sheds light on the religious, political and intellectual history of mid-nineteenth-century England. Though heaviest for the years of their joint work on the Rambler and the Home and Foreign Review, the correspondence continued up to 1875, a year before Simpson's death.
