Book Diary of a Pedestrian in Cashmere and Tibet William Henry Knight

Download or read book Diary of a Pedestrian in Cashmere and Tibet William Henry Knight written by William Henry Knight and published by . This book was released on 2009-12-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A passage from the book... With the fullest sense of the responsibility incurred by the addition of another volume to the countless numbers already existing, and daily appearing in the world, the following Diary has been committed to the press, trusting that, as it was not written WITH INTENT to publication, the unpremeditated nature of the offence may be its extenuation, and that as a faithful picture of travel in regions where excursion trains are still unknown, and Travellers' Guides unpublished, the book may not be found altogether devoid of interest or amusement. Its object is simply to bring before the reader's imagination those scenes and incidents of travel which have already been a source of enjoyment to the writer, and to impart, perhaps, by their description, some portion of the gratification which has been derived from their reality. With this view, the original Diary has undergone as little alteration of form or matter as possible, and is laid before the reader as it was sketched and written during the leisure moments of a wandering life, hoping that faithfulness of detail may atone in it for faults and failings in a literary and artistic point of view.

Book Precious Threads and Precarious Lives

Download or read book Precious Threads and Precarious Lives written by Amit Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the hitherto unexplored history of the shawl and silk industries of the himalyan state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It focuses on the three processes – production, circulation, and consumption – of the textile industry of the region to highlight its socio-economic and political importance in 19th- and 20th-century Kashmir. Using the micro-history approach, it studies the sites of production – the home looms or the small karkhana – efficiency of labour, and innovations by weavers in their techniques to suit the demands of the market. It also locates the impact colonialism had on transforming the labour economy in the Kashmir textile industry. Further, it compares these karkhanas with the Scottish factories or home looms to illuminate many sites of difference and comparison between the working styles and technologies. Mapping a history as complex as the weave on the finest Kashmiri shawl, this book brings to life the interface between culture, commodity, and colonial networks. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian history, colonial and imperial history, cultural studies, and economic and labour history.

The Galloping Russian Empire Generated Fears Of Advancement Of Russia In Northern India. The Thinking In The Foreign Office Gained Ground That The Tight Control Over Kashmir Was The Only Panacia To Stem The Tide Of The Russian Expansion. The British Imperialists Realizing Their Folly In Selling Kashmir To Maharaja Gulabsingh In 1848 Tried To Bring It Under Their Sphere Of Influence By All Possible Means. But Because Of The Strong Personality Of Maharaja Ranbir Singh They Could Not Establish Their Agency In The Border Area Of Gilgit. The Death Of Maharaja Ranbir Singh Was A Windfall For Them. By Engineer¬Ing Court Intrigues Between Pratap Singh And Amar Singh For Succession To The Throne, They Managed To Depose Pratap Singh And Instal Amar Singh As The President Of The Council Which Ostensibly Was Working Under The Dictates Of President Through Fraud And Forgery. The Book Brings To Light The Machinations Employed By The British Rulers Of India In Maintaining Their Paramountcy Over The Princely States. It Therefore Constitutes A Valuable Addition To The History Of The British Rule In India.
