Book Pipeline Reliability

Download or read book Pipeline Reliability written by Roger F. De la Mare and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The aim of the work reported here was to determine the reliability of North Sea pipelines. During the period studied, only two incidents, which could qualify as pipeline failures in the context of this report, occurred in the North Sea giving rise to an average failure rate of 0.7 failures per annun per one thosand kilometres of pipeline and 95% chance that the true average failure rate lay in the interval of 0.067 to 2.50. Resulting from the paucity of these failures, the scope of the study was extended to encompass other major pipeline systems throughout the world to see if their failure rates were sufficiently similar, to those for North Sea pipelines, to give a better understanding of North Sea Pipeline failure rates. The major conclusions of this work were that: (a) there was sufficient similarity of failure rates for all pipeline systems, irrespective of the commodity conveyed and/(or) the environment, to permit a better understanding of North Sea Pipeline failures, (b) the failure rates of pipelines were diameter dependent, (c) approximately 50% of all pipeline failures could be attributed to factures external to and away from the pipeline, and (d) pipeline exhibit a "wear out" failure pattern and that this knowledge should be used to optimize surveillance, inspection and testing routines."

Book System Reliability Assessment of Corroded Pipelines

Download or read book System Reliability Assessment of Corroded Pipelines written by Zahiraniza Mustaffa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'System Reliability Assessment of Offshore Pipelines' portrays the application of probabilistic methods in assessing the reliability of these structures subjected to corrosion. The analysis interprets corrosion data as random variables and probabilistic functions, through which uncertainties of corrosion inspection tool can be taken into account. The reliability of the pipeline is studied by treating the structure as an independent unit. The analysis is further elaborated for pipelines arrayed as a series system of units, with the consideration of length effects. A framework for the reliability-based maintenance model is also developed, aiming at optimizing the pipeline system operations. Herein, the analysis is mainly focused on improving the practice of releasing corrosion inhibitors into the pipeline. The use of inhibitors is considered to be the most applied maintenance practice among pipeline industries because of its simple mechanism to fight against corrosion. Last but not least, the research also looks into interpreting corrosion in space using theories on hydrodynamics.

Book excerpt: This conference provides a forum for exchange of technical and operational information across a wide range of pipeline activities. Various supply and distribution industries, and their service organisations, have traditionally approached pipeline systems from many different perspec tives. The organisers believe that significant benefits can be gained by enabling representatives from the oil, gas, water, chemical, power and related industries to present their latest ideas and methods. An awareness of these alternative methodologies and technologies should result in a more unified and coherent approach to each individual type of pipeline system. The overall theme of the conference is the optimisation of pipeline systems, through design analysis, component specification, operational strategies and performance evaluation, in order to minimise both risk and the lifetime cost of ownership. Wherever possible emphasis is given to important developing technologies with special consideration to use of computational equipment and methods. SYSTEMS APPROACH For the major activities of design, operation and performance; pipeline systems can be conveniently classified in terms of the systetV: components, constraints and objectives. These are described using fluid terminology, to suit' the majority of conference participants, as given below: Components consist of pumps and valves (controls), pipe networks (transmission and distribu tion), reservoirs (storage) and consumer demands (disturbances). The arrangement of these components, to form the system, must take into account the conflicting requirements of structural, hydraulic, and cost, performance.

Parameters studied were global, local and environmental monitoring and the technologies studies were continuous, remote and in-pipe sensing. Gathering data from range of different sensors(aircraft, satellites, within and on pipes) proved the most optimal, with the understanding that further study of newer methods is recommended.

Book Pipeline Integrity Management System PIMS Using Bayesian Networks for Lifetime Extension

Download or read book Pipeline Integrity Management System PIMS Using Bayesian Networks for Lifetime Extension written by Nurul Sa'aadah Sulaiman and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the world's offshore infrastructures are now showing the sign of aging and are approaching the end of their original design life. Their ability to withstand various operational and environmental changes have been the main concerns over the years. This is because the pipeline will still need to operate for a few more decades with increasing demand of oil and gas supply. To address the issues, an effective pipeline integrity management system is required to manage pipeline systems and to ensure the reliability and availability of the pipeline. The main goal is to identify, apply, and assess the applicability of the Bayesian network approach in evaluating the integrity of subsea pipelines that evolves with time. The study is aimed to specifically handle knowledge uncertainties and assist in the decision making of subsea pipeline integrity assessment. A static Bayesian network model was developed to compute the probability of pipeline condition and investigate the underlying factors that lead to pipeline damage. From the model, the most influential factors were identified and the sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the developed model was robust and accurate. The proposed model was then extended to develop a decision tool model using an Influence Diagram. The results from the proposed influence diagram were used to prioritize the maintenance scheme of the pipeline segments. Benefit to cost ratio was applied to determine the pipeline maintenance intervals. Dynamic Bayesian network was utilized to model timedependent deterioration of pipeline structural reliability. A good agreement with conventional structural reliability method is achieved. The present thesis has demonstrated the applicability and effectiveness of Bayesian network approach in the field of oil and gas. It is hoped that the proposed models can be applied by oil and gas pipeline practitioners to enhance the integrity and lifeltime of the oil and gas pipeline.

Book Reliability Based Integrity Management of Natural Gas Pipelines Subject to Spatio Temporal Corrosive Environment

Download or read book Reliability Based Integrity Management of Natural Gas Pipelines Subject to Spatio Temporal Corrosive Environment written by Keo-Yuan Wu and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pipeline integrity management refers to an approach of understanding and operating pipelines in a safe and reliable manner. In this work, firstly, a probabilistic predictive model for internal corrosion of natural gas pipelines subject to aqueous CO2/H2S environment has been proposed. The model regards uniform and pitting corrosion as two main corrosion mechanisms and has been calibrated with the experimental data in a deterministic framework. Methodologies of simulating and accounting for temporal and spatial variabilities of operating parameters have been proposed and applied to the model for field applications. The model has been validated against field data from eight wet gas gathering pipelines in a probabilistic framework. Secondly, a reinforcement learning (RL)-based maintenance scheduler has been proposed for pipeline maintenance optimization problems by leveraging the proposed predictive corrosion model and the Q-learning and Sarsa algorithms. A case study has shown the superiority of the proposed maintenance scheduler over the periodic maintenance policy in reducing the maintenance costs. Finally, the previous two parts of work have been integrated into a pipeline system integrity management software featuring pipeline health monitoring, corrosion prognosis, system-level failure analysis, sensor placement optimization, and inspection/maintenance optimization. A case study has been provided to demonstrate the capabilities of the software.
