Book Development of Thai Speech Audiometry Materials for Measuring Speech Recognition Thresholds

Download or read book Development of Thai Speech Audiometry Materials for Measuring Speech Recognition Thresholds written by Lauren Alexandra Hart and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Speech audiometry materials are essential for thorough audiological testing. One aspect of speech audiometry is evaluating an individual's speech recognition threshold (SRT). Recorded materials for SRT are available in many languages; however there are no widely published recorded SRT materials available in the Thai language. The goal of this study was to develop relatively psychometrically equivalent SRT materials for evaluating the hearing abilities of native speakers of the Thai language. To accomplish this, 90 commonly used bisyllabic Thai words were digitally recorded by a male and a female talker and evaluated by 20 native Thai listeners. Twenty-eight words with relatively steep and homogeneous psychometric function slopes were selected and adjusted to reduce threshold variability. These 28 selected words were digitally recorded onto compact disc to facilitate SRT testing for native Thai speakers.

Book excerpt: Notes that in the decade since the first edition, speech audiometry has been almost entirely replaced by electrophysiological tests in many countries for advanced diagnosis, but that many countries do not have such sophisticated equipment or training, and that audiology is still used for rehabilitation. Explains such aspects as the basic properties of speech, speech tests in quiet and noise as a measure of auditory processing, equipment and its calibration, speech tests of hearing for children, and experiences in a number of countries and institutions. Book Making and Using Word Lists for Language Learning and Testing

Download or read book Making and Using Word Lists for Language Learning and Testing written by I.S.P. Nation and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word lists lie at the heart of good vocabulary course design, the development of graded materials for extensive listening and extensive reading, research on vocabulary load, and vocabulary test development. This book has been written for vocabulary researchers and curriculum designers to describe the factors they need to consider when they create frequency-based word lists. These include the purpose for which the word list is to be used, the design of the corpus from which the list will be made, the unit of counting, and what should and should not be counted as words. The book draws on research to show the current state of knowledge of these factors and provides very practical guidelines for making word lists for language teaching and testing. The writer is well known for his work in the teaching and learning of vocabulary and in the creation of word lists and vocabulary size tests based on word lists.

Book The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation

Download or read book The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that 56.7 million Americans had some type of disability in 2010, which represents 18.7 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population included in the 2010 Survey of Income and Program Participation. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. As of December 2015, approximately 11 million individuals were SSDI beneficiaries, and about 8 million were SSI beneficiaries. SSA currently considers assistive devices in the nonmedical and medical areas of its program guidelines. During determinations of substantial gainful activity and income eligibility for SSI benefits, the reasonable cost of items, devices, or services applicants need to enable them to work with their impairment is subtracted from eligible earnings, even if those items or services are used for activities of daily living in addition to work. In addition, SSA considers assistive devices in its medical disability determination process and assessment of work capacity. The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation provides an analysis of selected assistive products and technologies, including wheeled and seated mobility devices, upper-extremity prostheses, and products and technologies selected by the committee that pertain to hearing and to communication and speech in adults.

Patient selection criteria have expanded from purely sensorineural hearing losses to conductive and mixed hearing losses in difficult-to-treat ears. This book takes into consideration recently developed methods as well as devices in current use. It begins with a fascinating and authentic history of active middle ear implants, written by one of the main pioneers in the field. In the following chapters, leading scientists and clinicians discuss the relevant topics in otology and audiology. Treatments for sensorineural hearing loss, conductive and mixed hearing losses, and results on alternative coupling sites such as the stapes footplate and the oval window are also covered, as well as articles on candidacy and cost-effectiveness. This publication is a must for ENT professionals and surgeons seeking out the latest knowledge on current research and clinical applications of active middle ear implants for all types of hearing loss.
