Book Bee Genetics and Breeding

Download or read book Bee Genetics and Breeding written by Thomas E. Rinderer and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bee Genetics and Breeding provides an overview of the state of knowledge in bee genetics and breeding. The book is organized into two parts. Part I deals with the scholarly issues of bee genetics. It is intended as a reference source for students of both bees and genetics. It could also serve as a text for university courses in bee genetics. Topics discussed include the evolution of eusocial insects; geographical variability and classification of honey bees; and behavioral and biochemical genetics of honey bees. Part II deals more specifically with the practical issues of bee breeding. The discussions include the quantitative genetics of honey bees; ways to define and measure honey-bee characteristics so that the "best" parents for honey-bee stock improvement programs can be selected; and mating designs. This section contains sufficient guidance for bee breeders to initiate or improve breeding programs. Apiculturalists generally will find this part especially interesting since the quality of their own bee stock depends on the skills and knowledge of the breeders who produce their queens.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honey Honey-Bee: Natural History, Physiology, an and Management The natural history and management of bees would probably occupy the attention of man at an early period. Surrounded by a boundless variety of living creatures, he would naturally be led to notice their habits and oeconomy; and no part of the animal world, or at any rate no part of the world of insects, would be more likely to engage his consideration than the honey-bee. Honey would, in all probability, constitute one of his earliest luxuries and as he advanced in civilization, he Would, as a matter of course. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of the Honeybee, or Are Bees Reflex Machines? For the English edition some additional references have been made to the impor tant literature which has appeared on the subject since the publication of the German editions. On the whole, our knowledge has not materially changed since then. Modern animal psychology tends to dis credit Bethe 's reflex theory. Although the contradiction of this theory was taken as a basis. For this paper, nevertheless it is con cerned chiefly with the statement of experi mental contributions to the natural history of the honeybee; these contributions dis cuss the life and instincts of the community of bees, and incorporate some of the results gained by practical bee-keeping. May this little paper gain friends on the other side of the ocean. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They have a king, and officers of sorts, Where some, like magistrates, correct at home; Others, like merchants, venture trade abroad; Others, like soldiers, armed in their stings, Make boot upon the summer's velvet buds, Which pillage they with merry march bring home To the tent royal of their emperor; Who, busied in his majesty, surveys The singing masons building roofs of gold; The civil citizens kneading up the honey; The poor mechanic porters crowding in Their heavy burdens at his narrow gate; The sad-eyed justice, with his surly hum, Delivering o'er to executors pale The lazy yawning drone!" Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Honey Bee Beekeeping is also a centre, a starting point, from which many delightful roads radiate; and creates a stimulus for increased knowledge, not only of the habits and life history of the little creatures who so delightfully minister both to our pleasure and profit, but also of the truly marvellous part they (with other allied insects) play in the economy of nature. Probably no other pursuit is calculated to bring one into intimate touch with nature at so many points as is beekeeping. To the gardener, the fruit-grower especially, bees are an absolute necessity. Book The Embryology of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Embryology of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint written by James Allen Nelson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Embryology of the Honey Bee Owing probably to the excellence Of the Observations just de scribed, over ten years elapsed before the egg Of the honey bee was again made the subject Of scientific investigation. In 1884 a paper by the Italian zoologist Battista Grassi appeared in a relatively Obscure journal - Atti dell' Academie Gioenia di scienzi naturali in Catania and according to Carriere (1897) re mained for a time almost unnoticed. This paper covers Seventy seven pages Of text (4to), and is illustrated by 252 figures cover ing ten plates. This is the fullest, and in fact the only complete account Of the embryology Of the honey bee ever published. Like his predecessors Grassi studied the living bee, but he also made free use Of microtome sections. The text consists of an intro duction including a brief review Of literature, twelve numbered chapters, each descriptive Of the development Of a tissue or sys tem Of organs, and in addition a chapter discussing the Signifi cance Of the facts recorded. This most excellent paper is scarcely open to criticism, when judged by the standard Of contempo raneous papers, and allowing for the relative crudity Of the histological technique Of that time. Indeed the correctness Of most Of the facts recorded are beyond question. Nevertheless, judged by modern standards, the text seems lacking in complete ness, while most Of the figures appear crude and diagrammatic, many Of them losing much Of their value by their small size. In addition the correctness Of some Of Grassi's statements are open to question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey Bee Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey Bee Classic Reprint written by L. L. Langstroth and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Treatise on the Hive and Honey-Bee I am happy to learn from my friend Mr. Langstroth, that a new edition of his work on the Hive and Honey-Bee is called for; I consider it by far the most valuable treatise on these subjects, which has come under my notice. Some years before it was published, I became acquainted with the main characteristics of his system of Bee-culture, and even then, I believed it to be incomparably superior to all others of which I had either read or heard. This conviction has been amply strengthened by the testimony of others, as well as by results which have come under my own observation. In my early life I had no inconsiderable experience in the management of bees, and I am bold to say that the hive which Mr. Langsteoth has invented, is in all respects greatly superior to any which I have ever seen, either in tins or foreign countries. Indeed, I do not believe that any one who takes an intelligent interest in the rearing of bees, can for a moment hesitate to use it; or, rather, can be induced to use any other, when he becomes acquainted with its nature and merits. Book The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies Classic Reprint written by C. W. Schaefer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Use of Pollen Traps and Pollen Supplements in Developing Honeybee Colonies The bees usually require several days to become accustomed to the trap. The pollen trapped during the first week will be below normal, thus making it desirable to leave the traps on the same hives rather than shifting them to different hives in the apiary. Colonies equipped with pollen traps will rear some brood but brood rearing will be curtailed. They may be given combs of pollen from other colonies to keep up their production, but good colonies at the beginning of the season will survive and may produce some honey. They can be united at the end of the season. Figure 6 shows a pollen tray, about two-thirds full of pollen, re moved from the trap. The pollen should be removed every 2 or 3 days under ordinary conditions and more often when the humidity is high or when the pollen is unusually moist. The pollen should be Spread out to a depth of to inch for air drying. To prevent molding, moist pollen can be dried rapidly in an improvised oven heated with electric light bulbs The oven may be constructed from a large fiber carton equipped with a rack to support five or six trays which consist of wooden rims covered with cheesecloth. The pollen should be Spread in a thin layer on the trays to allow the warm air which is generated at the bottom to pass through each tray and escape from an Opening in the top of the oven. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Production of Honeybees in Winter In considering the circumstances on this last day-of the experi ment with bees it is interesting to recall observations made in the study Of the effect Of ventilation on men, that the sensations produced by bad 7air are not experienced when the air is stirred. If this indicates an actual cliflerence in physiological conditions in the di mer ent circumstances, then it is not inconceivable that something analo gous to this was true Of the bees on this day. The stirring Of the air when the circulation was resumed may have served to remove some cause Of depression that was e mective when the circulation was stopped.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Humble-Bee: Its Life-History and How to Domesticate It, With Descriptions of All the British Species of Bombus and Psithyrus An article entitled "Bombi in Captivity and Habits of Psithyrus" that appeared in the Entomologist's Monthly Magazine for October 1899, contained my original division of the species of Bombus into pollen-storers and pocket-makers, and gave accounts of the self-parasitism of certain species, and of the parasitism of B. terrestris upon B. lucorum. Among matter now published for the first time are particulars of the Sladen wooden cover for artificial nests, and details of my humble-bee house. By the employment of the covers anybody may attract humble-bees to nest in his garden, and by obtaining a little wooden house and furnishing it as directed, one may study at leisure and in comfort all the details of their interesting and intelligent ways. The study of humble-bees has hitherto been hampered by the difficulty, encountered even by experienced entomologists, in separating some of the species. It is hoped that the colour-photographs, used in conjunction with the descriptions given, will now remove this difficulty. Book The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Classic Reprint written by R. E. Snodgrass and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of the Honey Bee Studies on the anatomy of the bee have not been lacking, for many good workers have taken up this subject for investigation. The popular demand for such information, however, has induced untrained men to write on the subject, and most accounts of bee anatomy contain numerous errors. This is probably to a greater extent true of the anatomy of the bee than of that of any other insect. Frequently the illustrations used by men not trained in anatomical work are more artistic than those usually found in papers on insect anatomy, and they consequently bear the superficial marks of careful work, but too often it is found that the details are in accurate. It has therefore seemed the right time for a new presenta tion of this subject based on careful work. The drawings given in the present paper are original, with the exception of figures 12, 54, and 55, and have been prepared with a thorough realization of the need of more accurate illustrations of the organs of the bee, especially of the internal organs. Mistakes will possibly be found, but the reader may be assured that all the parts drawn were seen. Most of the dissections, moreover, were verified by Dr. E. F. Phillips and Dr. J. A. Nelson, of this Bureau, before the drawings were made from them. An explanation of the abbreviations and lettering is given on pages 139 - 147.
