Book Application of the Thermal Flash Technique for Characterizing High Thermal Diffusivity Micro and Nanostructures

Download or read book Application of the Thermal Flash Technique for Characterizing High Thermal Diffusivity Micro and Nanostructures written by Laurent J. Majerus and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developments in modern electronics are hindered by smaller devices creating more heat without better cooling methods. Better heat dissipating materials are sought to lower operating temperatures, and an increasing number of micro and nanostructures are being developed for such use. Testing these one dimensional structures is difficult due to their microscopic scale, so a new method is developed for measuring the thermal properties of high thermal diffusivity micro and nanofibers. This method builds upon previous techniques to remove inaccuracies and unnecessary complications. The result is the thermal flash technique used here to measure the thermal properties of a variety of carbon based structures, focusing on a fiber composed of polyimide and coal tar pitch developed at the University of Akron. An investigation into the thermal properties of these fibers as a function of pitch is presented, and the results compare within +/- 5% to reported values in the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the main methods used for thermal properties measurement. It aims to be accessible to all those, specialists in heat transfer or not, who need to measure the thermal properties of a material. The objective is to allow them to choose the measurement method the best adapted to the material to be characterized, and to pass on them all the theoretical and practical information allowing implementation with the maximum of precision.

Book Handbook of Terrestrial Heat Flow Density Determination

Download or read book Handbook of Terrestrial Heat Flow Density Determination written by R. Haenel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There comes a time in the affairs of every organization when we have to sit down and take stock of where we are and where we want to go. When the International Heat Flow Committee (as it was first called), IHFC, was formed in 1963 at the San Francisco International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics with Francis Birch as its first Chairman, the principal purpose was to stimulate work in the basic aspects of geothermics, particularly the measurement of terrestrial heat-flow density (HFD) in what were then the 'geothermally underdeveloped' areas of the world. In this, the IHFC was remarkably successful. By the beginning of the second decade of our existence, interest in the economic aspects of geothermics was increasing at a rapid pace and the IHFC served as a conduit for all aspects of geothermics and, moreover, became the group responsi ble for collecting data on all types of HFD measurements. In all the tasks that are undertaken, the IHFC relies on the enthusiasm of its members and colleagues who devote much of their time to the important but unglamorous and personally unrewarding tasks that were asked of them, and we arc fortunate that our parent institutions are usually quite tolerant of the time spent by their employees on IHFC work.

Book The Cauchy Method of Residues

Download or read book The Cauchy Method of Residues written by Dragoslav S. Mitrinovic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1, i. e. the monograph The Cauchy Method of Residues - Theory and Applications published by D. Reidel Publishing Company in 1984 is the only book that covers all known applications of the calculus of residues. They range from the theory of equations, theory of numbers, matrix analysis, evaluation of real definite integrals, summation of finite and infinite series, expansions of functions into infinite series and products, ordinary and partial differential equations, mathematical and theoretical physics, to the calculus of finite differences and difference equations. The appearance of Volume 1 was acknowledged by the mathematical community. Favourable reviews and many private communications encouraged the authors to continue their work, the result being the present book, Volume 2, a sequel to Volume 1. We mention that Volume 1 is a revised, extended and updated translation of the book Cauchyjev raeun ostataka sa primenama published in Serbian by Nau~na knjiga, Belgrade in 1978, whereas the greater part of Volume 2 is based upon the second Serbian edition of the mentioned book from 1991. Chapter 1 is introductory while Chapters 2 - 6 are supplements to the corresponding chapters of Volume 1. They mainly contain results missed during the preparation of Volume 1 and also some new results published after 1982. Besides, certain topics which were only briefly mentioned in Volume 1 are treated here in more detail.

Book Thermal Measurements Using Laser Flash Analysis and Frequency domain Thermoreflectance

Download or read book Thermal Measurements Using Laser Flash Analysis and Frequency domain Thermoreflectance written by Zhi Wang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal measurement is a critical part of determining the thermal properties of materials. Conventional steady-state thermal conductivity measurements have strict requirements on the sample dimensions and states, making it hard to measure most unconventional samples. Laser flash analysis (LFA) is a convenient and reliable method of determining different materials' thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. Apart from LFA, FDTR (Frequency Domain Thermoreflectance) is a much more powerful tool for thermal measurements, where samples with almost all dimensions and states can be measured. FDTR is thermal property microscopy that utilizes two lasers (pump and probe lasers) to measure the samples' thermal properties. The periodically modulated pump laser locally heats the sample. The probe laser detects the surface reflectivity of the sample, which can be used to calculate the thermal properties of the sample with models. Instead of only measuring the sample's thermal conductivity, the FDTR system can measure up to two properties at once - including volumetric heat capacity, thermal conductivity, thickness, interfacial conductivity, and the anisotropic ratio of thermal conductivity of the sample. This thesis demonstrates how LFA works and how it conducts measurements for polymeric composites and polymer blend samples. Also, this thesis concludes on how to set up an FDTR system and how it works on thermal measurements.
