Download or read book Developing a Conceptual Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Communications Mobile AD Hoc Network Simulation Model written by Henry L. Blackshear, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing demand for increased networking interoperability has spawned a requirement for ad hoc networking. One proposal to satisfy the need is development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) communications Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (NANET) . In order to establish these UAV NANETs, a large set of Internet Protocol (IP) based routing protocols must be analyzed to determine suitability for incorporation into the UAV NANET. This thesis represents the initial phase in developing a simulation model to look at routing performance parameters for the conceptual UAV NANET. The Optimum Network Performance (OPNET) simulation software tool was used for this analysis. Analysis and simulations of the Ad Hoc On-Demand Vector Protocol (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing protocol (DSR), and Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP) were conducted to determine their suitability for the UAV NANET model. Results conclude that some routing protocols are more suitable for military operations than others and that development of NANET gateway models are required. Additionally, network management and security issues for this conceptual network are addressed.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to develop a mobile ad-hoc network for collaborative Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based on a mesh networking standard called IEEE 802.11s. A low-cost, small form-factor, IEEE 802.11a based wireless modem was selected and integrated with the existing flight control system developed at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) UAV Laboratory. A self-configurable user-space application on the wireless modem was developed to provide functionality to collaborative algorithms, and to monitor the performance of the wireless network. The RAM.S. simulator, developed at VCU, was upgraded to support the simulation of advanced networking capabilities by integrating with a simulator called ns-3. The reconfigurability and performance of the IEEE 802.11s mesh network was validated and evaluated by conducting real-world flights. The results show that the IEEE 802.11s is a promising solution for collaborative UAV applications.

Book Flying Ad Hoc Networks

Download or read book Flying Ad Hoc Networks written by Jingjing Wang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on unmanned autonomous flight control programs, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with radio communication devices have been actively developed around the world. Given their low cost, flexible maneuvering and unmanned operation, UAVs have been widely used in both civilian operations and military missions, including environmental monitoring, emergency communications, express distribution, even military surveillance and attacks, for example. Given that a range of standards and protocols used in terrestrial wireless networks are not applicable to UAV networks, and that some practical constraints such as battery power and no-fly zone hinder the maneuverability capability of a single UAV, we need to explore advanced communication and networking theories and methods for the sake of supporting future ultra-reliable and low-latency applications. Typically, the full potential of UAV network’s functionalities can be tapped with the aid of the cooperation of multiple drones relying on their ad hoc networking, in-network communications and coordinated control. Furthermore, some swarm intelligence models and algorithms conceived for dynamic negotiation, path programming, formation flight and task assignment of multiple cooperative drones are also beneficial in terms of extending UAV’s functionalities and coverage, as well as of increasing their efficiency. We call the networking and cooperation of multiple drones as the terminology ‘flying ad hoc network (FANET)’, and there indeed are numerous new challenges to be overcome before the idespread of so-called heterogeneous FANETs. In this book, we examine a range of technical issues in FANETs, from physical-layer channel modeling to MAC-layer resource allocation, while also introducing readers to UAV aided mobile edge computing techniques.

This book was released on 2019-12-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how to plan the time-variant placements of the UAVs served as base station (BS)/relay, which is very challenging due to the complicated 3D propagation environments, as well as many other practical constraints such as power and flying speed. Spectrum sharing with existing cellular networks is also investigated in this book. The emerging unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been playing an increasing role in the military, public, and civil applications. To seamlessly integrate UAVs into future cellular networks, this book will cover two main scenarios of UAV applications as follows. The first type of applications can be referred to as UAV Assisted Cellular Communications. Second type of application is to exploit UAVs for sensing purposes, such as smart agriculture, security monitoring, and traffic surveillance. Due to the limited computation capability of UAVs, the real-time sensory data needs to be transmitted to the BS for real-time data processing. The cellular networks are necessarily committed to support the data transmission for UAVs, which the authors refer to as Cellular assisted UAV Sensing. To support real-time sensing streaming, the authors design joint sensing and communication protocols, develop novel beamforming and estimation algorithms, and study efficient distributed resource optimization methods. This book targets signal processing engineers, computer and information scientists, applied mathematicians and statisticians, as well as systems engineers to carve out the role that analytical and experimental engineering has to play in UAV research and development. Undergraduate students, industry managers, government research agency workers and general readers interested in the fields of communications and networks will also want to read this book.

Book Self configuring Ad hoc Networks for Unmanned Aerial Systems

Download or read book Self configuring Ad hoc Networks for Unmanned Aerial Systems written by Hans Claus Christmann and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently there is ongoing research in the field of Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANET) for several different scenarios. Research has focused on topology related challenges such as routing mechanisms or addressing systems, as well as security issues like traceability of radio communication or encryption. In addition, there are very specific research interests such as the effects of directional antennas for MANETs or optimized transmission techniques for minimal power consumption or range optimization. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in general, need wireless systems in order to communicate. Current UAS are very flexible and allow for a wide spectrum of mission profiles by means of utilizing different UAVs, according to the requirements at hand. Each mission poses special needs and requirements on the internal and external UAS communication and special mission scenarios calling for UAV swarms increase the complexity and require specialized communication solutions. UAS have specific needs not provided by the general research, but are, on the other hand, to diversified to make much use of narrowly focused developments; UAS form a sufficiently large research area for application of MANETs to be considered as an independent group with specialized needs worthy of tailored implementations of MANET principles. MANET research has not tackled a general approach to UAS although some sources show specific applications involving UAVS. This work presents some new aspects for the development of of ad-hoc wireless networks for UAVs and UAS and focuses on their specialties and needs. A general framework for MANET development is proposed. Furthermore, the proposed specific evaluation scenarios provide for a UAS focused comparison of MANET performance.

Book Evaluation of Mobile Ad Hoc Network of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles UAVs

Download or read book Evaluation of Mobile Ad Hoc Network of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles UAVs written by Jordi Riera Ayala and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) are an emerging technology that is still relatively unknown to the general public but it could be a key development in the future. Nowadays there is no immediate need to deploy this kind of network because the current ones perform well, but in wide areas they do not seem to work as well as expected. WMNs could solve this problem while reducing infrastructure and maintenance costs since they are self-forming and potentially more intelligent. They seem to be the best approach to what is known as the Internet of Things, a global device interconnection. This thesis explores their capabilities at a low scale, but adds the UAVs because they are mobile devices that might force the network to adapt. Also a mesh between UAVs could be used for communication and coordination between flying devices.

Book Strategy for an Army Center for Network Science Technology and Experimentation

Download or read book Strategy for an Army Center for Network Science Technology and Experimentation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-27 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has committed to a strategy of network-centric warfare. As a result, the Army has become increasingly interested in the critical role of network science. To a significant extent, this interest was stimulated by an earlier NRC report, Network Science. To build on that book, the Army asked the NRC to conduct a study to define advanced operating models and architectures for future Army laboratories and centers focused on network science, technologies, and experimentation (NSTE). The challenges resulting from base realignment and closure (BRAC) relocations of Army research, development, and engineering resourcesâ€"as they affected the NSTE programâ€"were also to be a focus of the study. This book provides a discussion of what NSTE is needed by the Army; an examination of the NSTE currently carried out by the Army; an assessment of needed infrastructure resources for Army NSTE; and an analysis of goals, models, and alternatives for an NSTE center.
