Book Ss Peter and Paul Jesuit Detroit s Oldest Church

Download or read book Ss Peter and Paul Jesuit Detroit s Oldest Church written by Patricia Montemurri and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No church building in Detroit is older than Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, its cornerstone laid in 1844. The parish was entrusted in 1877 to the Jesuits, who, from this base in the city's heart, developed institutions of learning and service, such as the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, Loyola High School, and Manresa Retreat House. Detroit parishes such as Gesu, Holy Family, and St. Maron also have roots here. The church's acclaimed Homeless Jesus sculpture signifies both its long history of service to those in need and the current outreach of the Pope Francis Center. Today, the parish is a young, diverse, and welcoming Catholic community and a sturdy reminder of Detroit's faith-based roots. Located across from downtown's gleaming Renaissance Center, the parish is engaged in and committed to the revival of Detroit.

Book Street Level Architecture

Download or read book Street Level Architecture written by Conrad Kickert and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-04 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the tools to maintain and rebuild the interaction between architecture and public space. Despite the best intentions of designers and planners, interactive frontages have dwindled over the past century in Europe and North America. This book demonstrates why even our best intentions for interactive frontages are currently unable to turn a swelling tide of economic and technological evolution, land consolidation, introversion, stratification, and contagious decline. It uses these lessons to offer concrete locational, programming, design, and management strategies to maximize street-level interaction and trust between street-level architecture, its inhabitants, and the city. This book demonstrates that designers, developers, planners, and managers ultimately have to create the right preconditions for inhabitants and passersby to bring frontages to life. These preconditions connect architecture to its urban, social, economical, and technological context. Only the right frontage in the right context, with the right design, the right inhabitation, and the right attitude to the city will become part of the ecosystem of trust and interaction that supports public life. This book empowers the many participants in this ecosystem to build, inhabit, and enjoy truly urbane architecture.

Book Great American Hotel Architects Volume 2

Download or read book Great American Hotel Architects Volume 2 written by Stanley Turkel CMHS and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourteen architects featured in this book designed 304 hotels and apartment hotels. Many were designed on the European plan for families to live without full service kitchens. Meals were prepared and served in restaurant-type dining rooms catering exclusively to residents and their families. The apartment hotels employed full-time service staffs who prepared and served daily room service meals. The first apartment hotels were built between 1880 and 1895. They were followed by a second wave of construction after the passage of the 1899 building code and the 1901 Tenement House Law. The third wave of apartment hotel construction occurred during the 1920s and ended with the Great Depression of the thirties. The passage of the Multiple Dwelling Act of 1929 altered height and bulk restrictions and permitted high-rise apartment buildings for the first time.

This book was released on 2005-02-15 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1965 Dudley F. Randall founded the Broadside Press, a company devoted to publishing, distributing and promoting the works of black poets and writers. In so doing, he became a major player in the civil rights movement. Hundreds of black writers were given an outlet for their work and for their calls for equality and black identity. Though Broadside was established on a minimal budget, Randall's unique skills made the press successful. He was trained as a librarian and had spent decades studying and writing poetry; most importantly, Randall was totally committed to the advancement of black literature. The famous and relatively unknown sought out Broadside, including such writers as Gwendolyn Brooks, Margaret Walker, Mae Jackson, Lance Jeffers, Etheridge Knight, Sonia Sanchez, Nikki Giovanni, Audre Lorde and Sterling D. Plumpp. His story is one of battling to promote black identity and equality through literature, and thus lifting the cultural lives of all Americans.

Book Detroit on Stage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marijean Levering
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2017-12-01
  • ISBN : 0814343236
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Detroit on Stage written by Marijean Levering and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detroit on Stage traces the extraordinary history of Detroit’s The Players Club from its beginnings in 1910 until present. Founded in 1910, Detroit’s Players Club is an all-male club devoted to the production of theater by members for other members’ enjoyment. Called simply "The Players," members of the club design, direct, and act in the shows, including playing the female roles. In Detroit on Stage, Marijean Levering takes readers behind the scenes of the club’s private "frolics" to explore the unique history of The Players, discover what traditions they still hold dear, and examine why they have survived relatively unscathed through changes that have shuttered older and more venerable institutions. The Players developed during a nationwide vogue for community and art theater and also as Detroit’s auto elites were in the midst of forming new private clubs to add to their own sense of prestige. By the 1920s, The Players had built their own playhouse and established most of their significant traditions, including the monthly frolics, at which the members perform for each other. At the frolics, members in the audience would wear tuxedos and drink beer out of personalized mugs, customs that remain to this day. Prominent Detroiters have always been among the ranks of the Players, and several well-known auto industry figures were members from the beginning, including banker Henry B. Joy, Oldsmobile sales manager Roy D. Chapin, and Ford executives James Couzens and Edsel Ford. Over the decades that followed the club’s founding, its membership and traditions have remained strong despite major world events that shook Detroit such as Prohibition, the Great Depression, and World War II. In looking at The Players of today, Levering explores the camaraderie and sense of history that has kept the club together and relatively unchanged throughout the years. She also examines the club’s notable members and its unique place in Detroit history. Detroit on Stage places The Players club in the broader contexts of social clubs, explaining how these organizations originate and function. Readers interested in Detroit cultural history and theater studies will enjoy this rare glimpse inside a long-standing Detroit cultural institution.
