The study will use four different simulated piloting tasks, emphasizing psychomotor, perceptual, mediational, and communications aspects. Pilot loading levels will be systematically adjusted. Our simulation facility is a GAT-1B that has been modified and instrumented for workload estimation techniques measurement. The flight simulator itself has three degrees of physical motion and a full complement of IFR instruments.

Specialists from both the flying qualities and flight control system disciplines were gathered in Dayton from both industry and government agencies. Formal and informal presentations, plus workshop discussions, were structured around proposed draft versions of the new Flying Qualities MIL-Standard and Handbook and the new Flight Control Systems MIL-Specification and Handbook. This report contains a record of the presentations and discussions as submitted by the individual authors.

It is divided into three primary sections. In the first section, issues surrounding the development and implementation of adaptive automation, are presented. Because physiological-based measures show much promise for implementing adaptive automation, the second section is devoted to examining candidate indices. In the final section, those techniques that show the greatest promise for adaptive automation as well as issues that still need to be resolved are discussed.

Book excerpt: Twenty workload estimation techniques were compared in terms of their sensitivity to changes in pilot loading in an ILS task. The techniques included opinion measures, spare mental capacity measures, physiological measures, eye behavior measures, and primary task measures. Loading was treated as an independent variable and had three levels: low, medium, and high. The load levels were obtained by a combined manipulation of windgust disturbance level and simulated aircraft pitch stability. Six instrumented-rated pilots flew a moving-base general aviation simulator in four sessions lasting approximately three hours each. Measures were taken between the outer and middle markers. Two opinion measures, one spare mental capacity measure, one physiological measure, and one primary task measure demonstrated sensitivity to loading in this experiment. These measures were: Cooper-Harper ratings, WCI/TE ratings, time estimation standard deviation, pulse rate mean, and control movements per unit time. The Cooper-Harper ratings, WCI/TE ratings, and control movements demonstrated sensitivity to all levels of load, whereas the time estimation measure and pulse rate mean showed sensitivity to some load levels. The results demonstrate that sensitivities of workload estimation techniques vary widely, and that only a few techniques appear to be sensitive in this type of ILS task which emphasizes psychomotor behavior.

Flight management systems for pilots, diagnostic and surgical aids for physicians, navigational displays for drivers, and decision-aiding systems for air-traffic controllers, represent only a few of the numerous domains in which powerful new automation technologies have been introduced. The benefits that have been reaped from this technological revolution have been many. At the same time, automation has not always worked as planned by designers, and many problems have arisen--from minor inefficiencies of operation to large-scale, catastrophic accidents. Understanding how humans interact with automation is vital for the successful design of new automated systems that are both safe and efficient. The influence of automation technology on human performance has often been investigated in a fragmentary, isolated manner, with investigators conducting disconnected studies in different domains. There has been little contact between these endeavors, although principles gleaned from one domain may have implications for another. Also, with a few exceptions, the research has tended to be empirical and only theory-driven. In recent years, however, various groups of investigators have begun to examine human performance in automated systems in general and to develop theories of human interaction with automation technology. This book presents the current theories and assesses the impact of automation on different aspects of human performance. Both basic and applied research is presented to highlight the general principles of human-computer interaction in several domains where automation technologies are widely implemented. The major premise is that a broad-based, theory-driven approach will have significant implications for the effective design of both current and future automation technologies. Book excerpt: This current experiment was an attempt to measure workload during flight simulation, using two primary variables: the pilots' own evaluation sampled once per minute with a computer and the latency or delay of that response. This was supplemented by a post-flight questionnaire. Three levels of flight difficulty were established by subject matter experts. These were varied by controlling (1) initial clearance complexity, (2) level of air traffic control, (3) turbulence, and (4) inflight emergency. Flights were conducted in a General Aviation Instrument trainer and 12 pilots participated. Results demonstrated that pilots were willing and able to make inflight workload evaluations which corresponded directly with the induced difficulty level. Response latencies increased in relationship to difficulty, but the intermediate and most difficult flights were not significantly different. Factor analyses of all measures produced two clusters for the easiest and intermediate flights (inflight and postflight) and four for the most difficult flights. In the latter case, inflight and postflight measures separated into two factors and the questionnaire split also into two segments. These separations indicated that within the current state of the art, both types of measures should continue to be collected. Plans call for follow-on research in General Aviation Workload.
