Book Determination of Properties of Concrete Used in Thermal Studies for Lock and Dam Number 2 Red River Waterway

Download or read book Determination of Properties of Concrete Used in Thermal Studies for Lock and Dam Number 2 Red River Waterway written by Terence C. Holland and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two concrete mixtures, one containing and one not containing fly ash, were tested to determine pertinent physical properties for use in a finite element method (FEM) analysis of concrete thermal conditions during the construction of Lock and Dam No. 2 on the Red River Waterway. The overall objective of this testing and analysis was to develop construction procedures aimed at eliminating thermally induced concrete cracking during construction of the structure. The concrete mixtures tested were selected to be representative of those which will be used in the project. Aggregates and cements were from suppliers who could be expected to participate in the actual construction. The testing program included determination of ultimate strain capacity, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, thermal diffusivity, specific heat, adiabatic temperature rise, and coefficient of linear thermal expansion. The strain capacity data presented are somewhat unique in that the two concrete mixtures evaluated more closely resembled structural concretes than typical mass concretes. A limited investigation of the effect of the size of the concrete specimens on their strain capacity was also conducted. Strain capacities were seen to decrease with specimen size for specimens in the range from 18 by 18 in. by 96 in. to 6 by 6 by 36 in This decrease may have been the result of one or more of the following: (a) differences in instrumentation used to measure strains; (b) differences in setting and curing temperatures as well as thermally induced strains for the larger beams; and (c) a greater probability of flaws in the larger cross sections of the larger beams.

Book Red River Waterway Thermal Studies Report 2 Thermal Stress Analyses

Download or read book Red River Waterway Thermal Studies Report 2 Thermal Stress Analyses written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the second of a series documenting the findings of the Red River Waterway Thermal Study. It includes the results of thermal and incremental construction analyses of a typical navigation lock chamber monolith and an upper-gate bay monolith for Locks and Dams 4 and 5, Red River Waterway. Also analyzed was a typical dam weir section. These analyses were conducted using a general-purpose heat transfer and stress analysis finite element program which included a time-dependent cracking material model for concrete. Results of thermal properties tests and climate data were used to describe thermal boundary conditions, forcing functions, and thermal properties for the thermal analyses. Results of mechanical properties tests were used to calibrate and verify the time-dependent material model. Concrete mixtures with up to 50-percent replacement of Type II cement with Class C fly ash were studied. Results of two- and three-dimensional finite-element analyses were used to recommend lift heights, placement temperatures, and insulation requirements for construction. Concrete construction, Finite-element, Mass concrete, Concrete mixtures analyses, Stress and strain, Dams, Locks.

Book Red River Waterway Thermal Studies Report 1 Concrete Mixture Selection and Characterization

Download or read book Red River Waterway Thermal Studies Report 1 Concrete Mixture Selection and Characterization written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes the selection and characterization of the concrete materials in support of thermal- and incremental-construction analyses. The primary objective was to develop and evaluate materials and construction methods which would yield safe, serviceable structures with lower life-cycle costs. Materials (Type II portland cement, Class C fly ash, and aggregates) were selected based upon materials likely to be used to develop 15 trial concrete mixtures. Ratios of Class C fly ash to total cementitious materials from 0.25 to 0.60 were studied. Water cement ratios were varied from 0.45 to 0.65. These mixtures were evaluated based upon strength requirements, economy, and thermal considerations. From the 15 mixtures, 4 candidate mixtures were selected for complete thermal and mechanical properties characterization. Tests included thermal properties, adiabatic temperature rise, creep, elastic modulus, shrinkage, and compressive strength. Keywords: Concrete mixtures; Dams/locks waterways; Construction materials; Construction/cement; Strength mechanics; Stress strain mechanics; Thermal stresses/properties; Fly ash.
