Download or read book Wastewater Treatment written by Amy J. Forsgren and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the sources of water contamination by PAHs and their transportation and fate in natural aquatic systems. It then discusses, from the analytical chemist’s view, how to determine the presence of PAHs in water and wastewater, and the changes in PAH concentration during treatment processes. The text examines the removal of PAHs using membrane bioreactors and advanced sludge processes, highlighting results from both demonstration and full-scale plants. It also examines the presence of PAHs in conventional wastewater treatment plants, especially in sludge.

Book Determination of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water and Wastewater by a Gas Chromatographic Ultraviolet Spectrophotometric Method

Download or read book Determination of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Water and Wastewater by a Gas Chromatographic Ultraviolet Spectrophotometric Method written by RA. Brown and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and American industry are interested in determining the concentrations of 129 potentially hazardous compounds in water. Included on the recently issued priority pollutant list are 13 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNAs) containing from three to six condensed rings. Exxon Research has developed a gas chromatographic, ultraviolet spectrophotometric (GC-UV) method that accurately determines 23 PNAs, including the 13, at the 0.1-ppb (microgram/litre) level and higher in industrial and municipal wastewater effluents. Alkyl-substituted PNAs can be measured and additional compounds added as desired. The method has been verified by analyzing effluents spiked with a variety of PNAs.

Book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality

Download or read book WHO Guidelines for Indoor Air Quality written by and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2010 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents WHO guidelines for the protection of public health from risks due to a number of chemicals commonly present in indoor air. The substances considered in this review, i.e. benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, naphthalene, nitrogen dioxide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially benzo[a]pyrene), radon, trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene, have indoor sources, are known in respect of their hazardousness to health and are often found indoors in concentrations of health concern. The guidelines are targeted at public health professionals involved in preventing health risks of environmental exposures, as well as specialists and authorities involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and products. They provide a scientific basis for legally enforceable standards.

Book Determination of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Wastewater from Coal Liquefaction Processes by the Gas Chromatography Ultraviolet Spectrometry Technique

Download or read book Determination of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Wastewater from Coal Liquefaction Processes by the Gas Chromatography Ultraviolet Spectrometry Technique written by GT. Boyer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the classes of compounds that may be present in wastewater from coal conversion plants is polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Since 13 PAHs containing from three to six condensed rings are on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) list of priority pollutants, an analytical method has been developed for the determination of PAHs in process waters from coal liquefaction processes. This method utilizes the well-established gas chromatography-ultraviolet spectrometry (GC-UV) technique to determine the 13 at the 0.1 ppb (micrograms per litre) level and higher. Isomers and twelve additional PAHs are routinely measured, and the technique may be extended as necessary to cover other compounds as well.

Book Polynuclear Aromatic Compounds

Download or read book Polynuclear Aromatic Compounds written by Lawrence B. Ebert and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents accounts of current research in polynuclear aromatic compounds, showing examples of studies both of pure compounds and of complex, fossil fuel related mixtures. Offers a thorough knowledge of aromatic chemistry through coverage of reduction, oxidation, and thermal reactions--including applications developed for both coal and petroleum materials. Featured topics include quantum chemical structure-reactivity relationships, spatial configurations of large polynuclear hydrocarbons, cyclophanes, and desulfurization of heterocycles. Scientists studying all aspects of the chemistry of polynuclear aromatics will discover important, pertinent information in this volume.

Book PAHs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter E. T. Douben
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2003-07-25
  • ISBN : 047086429X
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book PAHs written by Peter E. T. Douben and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), or polyarenes, are one of the largest and most structurally diverse class of organic molecules known. High percentages of polyarenes, representing a wide range of molecular sizes and structural types, are present in coal tars and petroleum residues. The major sources of PAHs are crude oil, coal and oil shale. The fuels produced from these fossil sources constitute the primary source of energy for the industrial nations of the world, and the petrochemicals from these raw materials are the basis of the synthetic fibre and plastics industries. PAHs are however, widespread pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health must be monitored and controlled. This book will review and assess our scientific understanding of the ecological exposure and effects PAHs have in different environments and habitats. It will accomplish this by taking the recipients of the pollution in the environment as starting points and working its way back through pathways to access what is required for our understanding of effects and rationale for control. Although this book will concentrate on ecological exposure of PAHs, the general impacts of PAHs on human populations will be touched upon. It is thought to be the first book to focus on the ecological aspects of PAHs.
