Book Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule

Download or read book Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule written by Tea Mayhew and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2013-11-27T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an overview of the crucial events that took place during the passage from the Ottoman to the Venetian rules in the Dalmatian hinterland during the Candian and Morean Wars in the second half of the 17th century. The hinterland of the capital city of the Venetian dual province of Dalmatia and Albania – the city of Zadar/Zara – has been used here as a case study to depict all the changes relating to: inhabitation, the appearance of settlements, changes in the populations and migrations, the forms and models of administrative and political institutions, specific border economies and the development of Venetian border areas through trade with the Ottomans alongside agriculture in the contado. Studied here is how the city of Zadar, whose life was organised as a typical coastal community like many in the Venetian Republic along with its contado, managed to enlarge its territory and incorporate elements of Ottoman political, administrative and cultural heritage along with thousands of Ottoman Christian subjects.

Book Under Two Lions

Download or read book Under Two Lions written by Giorgio Rota and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Two Lions deals with the relationship which existed in the field of culture between Persia and the Republic of Venice in a key period of their history, the years 1450-1797, when both the Republic and Persia found themselves confronted with modernity. The Republic gradually lost its status as a great European power and eventually ceased to exist altogether during the wars that followed the French Revolution. Persia went through a long period of deep and often bloody political, social and religious transformations, but it was still strong enough by the beginning of the 19th century to preserve its political independence in the face of European colonial expansion. The only book-length essay on Persian-Venetian relations dates back to 1865 and deals mostly with diplomacy and trade: Under Two Lions thus fills a gap in the study of the relations between Europe and the Islamic world in the early modern period. Under Two Lions looks at these relations from an Iranological point of view and puts previous scholarship on this subject into a coherent framework, at the same time adding new findings and a new perspective: the result is a new account of Persian-Venetian relations. Under Two Lions pays particular attention to one vital aspect of these relations, that is, the way the Venetians obtained their information about Persia and the Persians: traders played a major role in the acquisition of this information and therefore play a major role in this book as well. Investigating these merchants, who were not only Italian but also Persian and Armenian, has very important implications for the social and economic history of both countries and, given the fact that the Persian sources do not cover the life and the activities of these merchants (neither the Venetians in Persia nor the Persians in Venice), the Venetian sources acquire special importance. The book shows clearly that the Venetians were perfectly capable of obtaining a good knowledge of Persia but also had only limited interest in sharing their information on this or other subjects with other Europeans, who were after all the subjects of rival political and economic powers. Of particular note among the different subjects dealt with in Under Two Lions is the question of the Venetian contribution to the "discovery" of Persia and to early Orientalism. At the same time, Under Two Lions shows the potential results that can be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach to the subject and is the indispensable starting point for further research.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deals with the history of eyeglasses from their invention in Italy ca. 1286 to the appearance of the telescope three cent. later. "By the end of the 16th cent. eyeglasses were as common in western and central Europe as desktop computers are in western developed countries today." Eyeglasses served an important technological function at both the intellectual and practical level, not only easing the textual studies of scholars but also easing the work of craftsmen/small bus. During the 15th cent. two crucial developments occurred: the ability to grind convex lenses for various levels of presbyopia and the ability to grind concave lenses for the correction of myopia. As a result, eyeglasses could be made almost to prescription by the early 17th cent. Illus.

Book Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia written by Thomas P. Ofcansky and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2004-03-29 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia is one of the world's oldest countries; its Rift Valley may be the location where the ancestors of humankind originated more than four million years ago. With a population of 67 million people today, it is the third most populous country on the African continent after Nigeria and Egypt. It is the source of 86 percent of the water reaching the Aswan Dam in Egypt, most of it carried by the amazing Blue Nile. Ethiopia offers major historical sites such as the pre-Christian palace at Yeha, the stele and tombs of the old Kingdom of Axum, and the rock-carved churches of Lalibela. For anyone interested in Ethiopia, this historical dictionary, through its individual and carefully cross-referenced entries, captures the importance and intrigue of this truly significant African nation. Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia appeals to all levels of readers, providing entries for each of Ethiopia's 85 ethnic groups and covering a broad range of cultural, political, and economic topics. Readers interested in the cultural aspects or who are planning to visit Ethiopia will find a wealth of entries on art, literature, handicrafts, music, dance, bird life, geography, and historic tourist sites. Practitioners in government and non-governmental organizations will find entries on pressing economic, social, and political issues such as HIV/AIDS, female circumcision , debt, human rights, and the environment. The important historical role of missionaries and the combination of conflict and cooperation between Christians and Muslims in the region are also issues reviewed. And, finally, many of the entries highlight relations between Ethiopia and her neighbors-Eritrea, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan. In the bibliography, considerable emphasis has been placed on including both new and old materials covering all facets of Ethiopia, organized for easy identification by areas of major interest.

Book Tolerance and Intolerance on the Triplex Confinium

Download or read book Tolerance and Intolerance on the Triplex Confinium written by International Research Project "Triplex Confinium." International Conference and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Triplex Confinium, or triple border, was an actual point in the proximity of the town of Knin in Croatia, between the Habsburg Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice after the peace treaty of Karlowitz in 1699. The Triplex Confinium, as an area and experience of living on the crossroads of different civilizations, cultures and religions in a long historical perspective, inspired an international research project focused upon the comparative history and intercultural approaches of borders and borderlands in Southeast Europe, where three distinctive political, cultural and confessional contexts encountered each other over the centuries. The Triplex Confinium is above all a metaphor of cultural challenges in the areas of multiple borderlands.
