The properties of the sand-asphalt mortars or fine aggregate matrix (FAM) can be used to characterize the evolution of fatigue crack growth and self-healing in asphalt mixtures. This study compares the internal microstructure of the mortar within a full asphalt mixture to the internal microstructure of the FAM specimen. This study also conducts a limited evaluation of the influence of mixture properties and methods of compaction on the engineering properties of the FAM specimens. The results from this study, although limited in number, indicate that in most cases the SGC compacted FAM specimen had a microstructure that most closely resembled the microstructure of the mortar within a full asphalt mixture. Another finding from this study was that, at a given level of damage, the healing characteristic of the three different types of FAM mixes was not significantly different. This indicates that the healing rate is mostly dictated by the type of binder and not significantly influenced by the gradation or binder content, as long as the volumetric distribution of the mastic was the same. In other words, the inherent healing characteristics of the asphalt binder plays a more significant role relative to other properties (e.g. volumetrics) in the overall fatigue cracking resistance of the asphalt mixture.

Book excerpt: Studies show that the microstructure of the fine aggregate matrix has a significant influence on the mechanical properties and evolution of damage in an asphalt mixture. However, very little work has been done to quantitatively characterize the microstructure of the asphalt binder within the fine aggregate matrix of asphalt mixtures. The first objective of this study was to quantitatively characterize the three dimensional microstructure of the asphalt binder within the fine aggregate matrix (FAM) of an asphalt mixture and compare the influence of binder content, coarse aggregate gradation, and fine aggregate gradation on this microstructure. Studies indicate that gradation of the fine aggregate has the most influence of the degree of anisotropy whereas gradation of the coarse aggregate has the most influence on the direction anisotropy of the asphalt mastic within the fine aggregate matrix. Addition of asphalt binder or adjustments to the fine aggregate gradation also resulted in a more uniform distribution of the asphalt mastic within the fine aggregate matrix. Book excerpt: Mechanistic-empirical flexible pavement design procedures proposed for use within the 2002 Design Guide require the input of the dynamic modulus (E*) of hot-mix asphalt concrete. In addition, the E* test has been proposed as a "simple performance test" for use in mixture design and construction quality control. The objective of this study included conducting the dynamic modulus test, evaluating the accuracy/variability of test results, and constructing master curves for the mixtures tested. The hotmix asphalt mixes tested in this research are typically used for pavement construction in Arkansas, and binder content and air voids were varied to simulate typical construction variability. The analysis showed that the variability of the average dynamic modulus for each set of four replicates was acceptable. Since the dynamic modulus tests were run at intermediate temperatures in this study, a modified procedure, using Arrhenius and power functions, was employed to construct the master curves. Based on the master curves, the effects of aggregate size, binder content, and air voids on the tested asphalt mixtures were evaluated and determined to be consistent and reasonable. The testing procedure and results of this study were recommended for use in a new project to characterize the stiffness of Arkansas mixtures to prepare input data for the proposed 2002 Design Guide.

Book excerpt: Aggregate strength, gradation, and shape play a vital role in controlling asphalt mixture performance. Many studies have demonstrated the effects of these factors on asphalt mixture performance in terms of resistance to fatigue cracking and rutting. This study introduces numerical and analytical approaches supported with imaging techniques for studying the interrelated effects of aggregate strength, gradation, and shape on resistance of asphalt mixtures to fracture. The numerical approach relies on the discrete element method (DEM). The main advantage of this approach is the ability to account for the interaction between the internal structure distribution and aggregate properties in the analysis of asphalt mixture response and performance. The analytical approach combines aggregate strength variability and internal force distribution in an asphalt mixture to predict the probability of aggregate fracture. The numerical and analytical approaches were calibrated and verified using laboratory tests on various aggregate types and mixtures. Consequently these approaches were used to: (1) determine the resistance of various mixture types with different aggregate properties to fracture, (2) study the effects of aggregate strength variability on fracture, (3) quantify the influence of blending different types of aggregate on mixture strength, (4) develop a mathematical expression for calculating the probability of aggregate fracture within asphalt mixture, and (5) relate cracking patterns (cohesive: aggregate - aggregate and matrix - matrix, and adhesive: aggregate - matrix) in an asphalt mixture to internal structure distribution and aggregate properties. The results of this dissertation established numerical and analytical techniques that are useful for developing a virtual testing environment of asphalt mixtures. Such a virtual testing environment would be capable of relating the microscopic response of asphalt mixtures to the properties of the mixture constituents and internal structure distribution. The virtual testing environment would be an inexpensive mean to evaluate the influence of changing different material and design factors on the mixture response.
