Book excerpt: In the field of hard X-ray and y-ray astronomy, there is increasing demand for new instruments having better energy resolution and more efficient charged particle background rejection than the present generation of inorganic scintillator spectrometers. These spectrometers are being replaced gradually by-cooled germanium solid state detectors, which have energy resolution many times better than the Hal scintillators. However, solid state detectors require complex cryogenic systems for their successful operation, and their background counting rates are comparable with those of NaI scintillators. For the detection of X-rays in the energy range 15-100 keV, a proportional counter has been developed at MSSL which uses a novel technique of charged particle background discrimination and could provide an alternative instrument to the Nal crystal scintillators. This detector, known here as the "Escape Gated Detector", has an improved energy resolution and a much more efficient background rejection compared with the conventional proportional counters. These characteristics make the Escape Gated Detector suitable for spectroscopy measurements of hard X-rays, an area of investigation which is still unexplored, and in particular for the detection and search of spectral line features such as those observed from Her X-1. A balloon experiment for the detection of X-rays in the energy range 40-100 keV has been envisaged for this detector. The sensitivity of a balloon borne X-ray detector is limited by the radiation environment present at balloon altitudes. For this reason Monte Carlo computer models have been developed to determine: (1) the quantum efficiency of the detector for different geometry and size. (2) the optimum shield required to screen the detector against atmospheric X-rays in the energy region of interest, and (3) the angular response function of the collimator. For the reader, the principal parameters of the balloon experiment are summarised in table I.

Section 3 is on layered synthetic microstructures (LSMs). Analysis of interface roughness and layer composition of LSMs by X-ray techniques, fabrication of hard X-ray telescopes with LSMs, and diffusion across interfaces of LSMs are discussed here. The last section contains articles dealing with semiconductor surfaces exposed to ion beams and ion-irradiated semiconductor multilayers.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documenta tion of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, compared to which our system of accumu lating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 32 contains literature published in 1982 and received before February 11, 1983; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bou~a, Prague, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech and supplied us with abstracts in English.
