This approach, which is more convenient than the so-called nested approach, has the difficulty of generating a large optimization problem. To overcome this problem a methodology of decomposition by multilevel is developed. This technique, which is also suitable for implementation on parallel processing computers, has the advantage of reducing the size of the optimization problem generated. The geometric programming for both equality and inequality constraints is used in the optimization.

Because of the pertinence of this body of literature to the structural design of advanced aerospace vehicles, a comprehensive bibliography of published literature on optimim structural design has been compiled and reviewed herein. In Part 1, a critical historical review highlights the significant advances in the literature concerned with analytical optimum design techniques for various structural elements, materials and thermal protection systems. The annotated bibliography is contained in Part 2. In Part 3, the current state of the art of the theory of optimum structural and thermostructural design is assessed. Included are the derivation of design indices resulting from various design requirements, a generalized presentation of optimum design theory and preferred methods of presenting optimum design results. Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the International Symposium, "The Optimum Shape: Automated Structural Design," held at the General Motors Research Laboratories on September 3D-October 1, 1985. This was the 30th symposium in a series which the Research Laboratories began sponsoring in 1957. Each symposium has focused on a topic that is both under active study at the Research Laboratories and is also of interest to the larger technical community. While attempts to produce a structure which performs a certain task with the minimum amount of resources probably predates recorded civilization, the idea of coupling formal optimization techniques with computer-based structural analysis techniques was first proposed in the early 1960s. Although it was recognized at this time that the most fundamental description of the problem would be in terms of the shape or contours of the structure, much of the early work described the problem in terms of structural sizing parameters instead of geometrical descriptions. Within the past few years, several research groups have started to explore this more fundamental area of shape design. Initial research has raised many new questions about appropriate selection of design variables, methods of calculating derivatives, and generation of the underlying analysis problem.

Rapid growth of interest in the cognitive aspects of optimization and the increas ing demands that the present day engineer has to meet in modern design have created the need of a monographic treatment of the subject. The vast number and wide range of structural optimization problems formulated and investigated in the last twenty years call for an attempt to sum up the pres ent state of knowledge in this domain and to outline the directions of its further development. The present authors undertook this task, hoping that the result would stimulate further work towards finding new methods and solutions and increasing the range of applications of the optimization methods to structural design. The immediate aim of the book is to present the basic criteria and methods of optimization and to provide a reference guide to the most important publications in the field. 'The book consists of fourteen chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts, definitions and assumptions relating to structural optimization.
