Book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings

Download or read book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings written by U.s. Department of Transportation and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible linings provide a means of stabilizing roadside channels. Flexible linings are able to conform to changes in channel shape while maintaining overall lining integrity. Long-term flexible linings such as riprap, gravel, or vegetation (reinforced with synthetic mats or unreinforced) are suitable for a range of hydraulic conditions. Unreinforced vegetation and many transitional and temporary linings are suited to hydraulic conditions with moderate shear stresses. Design procedures are given for four major categories of flexible lining: vegetative linings; manufactured linings (RECPs); riprap, cobble, gravel linings; and gabion mattress linings. Design procedures for composite linings, bends, and steep slopes are also provided. The design procedures are based on the concept of maximum permissible tractive force. Methods for determination of hydraulic resistance applied shear stress as well as permissible shear stress for individual linings and lining types are presented. This edition includes updated methodologies for vegetated and manufactured lining design that addresses the wide range of commercial products now on the market. This edition also includes a unified design approach for riprap integrating alternative methods for estimating hydraulic resistance and the steep slope procedures. Other minor updates and corrections have been made. This edition has been prepared using dual units.

Book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings

Download or read book Design of Roadside Channels with Flexible Linings written by Y. H. Chen and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible linings provide a means of stabilizing roadside channels. Flexible linings are able to conform to changes in channel shape while maintaining the overall lining integrity. Permanent flexible lining such as riprap, gravel, or vegetation reinforced with synthetic mat are suitable for hydraulic conditions similar to those requiring rigid linings. Vegetation or temporary linings are suited to hydraulic condition where uniform flow exists and shear stresses are moderate. Design procedures are given for rock riprap, wire-enclosed riprap, gravel riprap, woven paper net, jute net, fiberglass roving, curled wood mat, synthetic mat, and straw with net. Special design procedures are presented for composite channels and channels with steep gradients. The design procedures are based on the concept of maximum permissible tractive force. Methods for determination of hydraulic resistance and permissible shear stress for individual linings are presented. Nomographs are provided for solution of uniform flow conditions in trapezoidal channels. Nomographs are also provided for determination of resistance characteristics for vegetation and permissible shear stress for soils. (fr).

Download or read book Open Channel Design written by Ernest W. Tollner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OPEN CHANNEL DESIGN A fundamental knowledge of flow in open channels is essential for the planning and design of systems to manage water resources. Open channel design has applications within many fields, including civil engineering, agriculture, hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology, environmental fluid and sediment dynamics and river engineering. Open Channel Design: Fundamentals and Applications covers permissible velocity, tractive force, and regime theory design methodologies and applications. Hydraulic structures for flow control and measurement are covered. Flow profiles and their design implications are covered. Sediment transport mechanics and moveable boundaries in channels are introduced. Finally, a brief treatment of the St. Venant equations and Navier-Stokes equations are introduced as topics to be explored in more advanced courses. The central goal is to prepare students for work in engineering offices where they will be involved with aspects of land development and related consulting work. Students will also be prepared for advanced courses that will involve computational fluid dynamics approaches for solving 2-d and 3-d problems in advanced graduate level courses. Offering a fresh approach, Open Channel Design: Fundamentals and Applications prepares students for work in engineering offices where they will be involved with aspects of land development and related consulting work. It also introduces the reader to software packages including Mathematica, HecRas and HY8, all widely used in professional settings.

Book Tentative Design Procedure for Riprap lined Channels

Download or read book Tentative Design Procedure for Riprap lined Channels written by Alvin George Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was the development of criteria and design procedures for the use of aggregate riprap linings, which consists of a layer of discrete fragments of rock of sufficient size to resist the erosive forces of the flow. The design of such riprap-lined drainage channels involves the interrelationship between the discharge, the longitudinal slope, the size and shape of the channel, and the size distribution of the riprap lining. This report describes these interrelationships and develops design criteria by which a riprap-lined drainage channel can be proportioned and the riprap lining can be specified for a given discharge and longitudinal slope. The relationships so developed have been reduced to design charts, the use of which permits rapid and simple establishment of channel shape and size as well as of the properties of the riprap lining.
