Book Design Construction and Maintenance of Cover Systems for Hazardous Waste

Download or read book Design Construction and Maintenance of Cover Systems for Hazardous Waste written by R. J. Lutton and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document emphasizes the special characteristics of solid waste management as they bear on cover systems. Cover systems typically consist of two to four layers of soil and other materials and resemble a highway pavement system in many respects. This similarity facilitates the preparation and use of construction and maintenance specifications. Example specifications are in the appendices of the full report. Criteria and methods are provided for engineering analyses of percolation, erosion, stability, flooding, freezing, and settlement. Techniques are available for compensation for each of these threats, again using recognized design and construction methods. Finally, guidance is included on methods of maintenance and repair over the unusually long design life of a solid and hazardous waste disposal facility.

Book EPA Environmental Engineering Sourcebook

Download or read book EPA Environmental Engineering Sourcebook written by J. Russell Boulding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) publishes several series of documents that provide up-to-date information about environmental site assessment and remediation. The EPA Environmental Engineering Sourcebook includes papers and bulletins that focus on remediation of soil and groundwater, making them available in a convenient form. This book compiles thirty-five documents- written by recognized leaders - on major methods and promising new techniques for hazardous waste treatment and site remediation. Each chapter evaluates the type of contaminant and site characteristics needed to select a technology for use at hazardous waste sites. The EPA Environmental Engineering Sourcebook presents EPA documents in an easy-to-use, concise format. It contains numerous graphs, charts and figures that make it an important resource for those involved in environmental protection, site remediation, and site assessment. Features Contains chapters written by recognized leaders Examines major methods as well as assesses new techniques for hazardous waste treatment and site remediation Presents information in an easy-to-use, concise format Evaluates each type of contaminant and site characteristics for selecting technology at hazardous waste sites

Book Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers

Download or read book Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-09-22 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Carter's 1980 declaration of a state of emergency at Love Canal, New York, recognized that residents' health had been affected by nearby chemical waste sites. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, enacted in 1976, ushered in a new era of waste management disposal designed to protect the public from harm. It required that modern waste containment systems use "engineered" barriers designed to isolate hazardous and toxic wastes and prevent them from seeping into the environment. These containment systems are now employed at thousands of waste sites around the United States, and their effectiveness must be continually monitored. Assessment of the Performance of Engineered Waste Containment Barriers assesses the performance of waste containment barriers to date. Existing data suggest that waste containment systems with liners and covers, when constructed and maintained in accordance with current regulations, are performing well thus far. However, they have not been in existence long enough to assess long-term (postclosure) performance, which may extend for hundreds of years. The book makes recommendations on how to improve future assessments and increase confidence in predictions of barrier system performance which will be of interest to policy makers, environmental interest groups, industrial waste producers, and industrial waste management industry.
