Book A History of Arab Graphic Design

Download or read book A History of Arab Graphic Design written by Bahia Shehab and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-ever book-length history of Arab graphic design PROSE AWARD WINNER, ART HISTORY & CRITICISM Arab graphic design emerged in the early twentieth century out of a need to influence, and give expression to, the far-reaching economic, social, and political changes that were taking place in the Arab world at the time. But graphic design as a formally recognized genre of visual art only came into its own in the region in the twenty-first century and, to date, there has been no published study on the subject to speak of. A History of Arab Graphic Design traces the people and events that were integral to the shaping of a field of graphic design in the Arab world. Examining the work of over eighty key designers from Morocco to Iraq, and covering the period from pre-1900 to the end of the twentieth century, Bahia Shehab and Haytham Nawar chart the development of design in the region, beginning with Islamic art and Arabic calligraphy, and their impact on Arab visual culture, through to the digital revolution and the arrival of the Internet. They look at how cinema, economic prosperity, and political and cultural events gave birth to and shaped the founders of Arab graphic design. Highlighting the work of key designers and stunningly illustrated with over 600 color images, A History of Arab Graphic Design is an invaluable resource tool for graphic designers, one which, it is hoped, will place Arab visual culture and design on the map of a thriving international design discourse.

Book Interior Design Since 1900 Fourth World of Art

Download or read book Interior Design Since 1900 Fourth World of Art written by Anne Massey and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Newly updated and overflowing with color, this well-established history of interior design describes and illustrates each movement and change in taste throughout the twentieth century. Interior design experienced an extraordinary amount of changes in taste and style during the twentieth century. From William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement to expressionism, postmodernism, and green design, Interior Design Since 1900 charts them all. Featuring more than two hundred color illustrations of interiors from around the world, this book reveals the fundamental changes in style that occurred throughout the century. The 1900s saw the emergence of professional designers and a growing appetite to redesign homes to keep up with popular fashion. In recent decades, the focus has shifted toward public spaces and sustainable design. In this survey, Anne Massey explores the social, political, economic, and cultural contexts of these developments. This book has been a classic introduction to interior design for almost thirty years. The new, fourth edition is brought up-to-date with a chapter on transnational design, encompassing mid-century modernist work in Singapore and Sri Lanka, as well as more recent interior spaces, including luxury hotels in Dubai and a contemporary art museum in Cape Town. Through this book, Massey shows how a shared language of design and cutting-edge technology are reshaping interiors around the globe.

Book Architecture Design and Craft in Toronto 1900 1940

Download or read book Architecture Design and Craft in Toronto 1900 1940 written by Alla Myzelev and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toronto - the largest and one of the most multicultural cities in Canada - boasts an equally interesting and diverse architectural heritage. Architecture, Design and Craft in Toronto 1900-1940 tells a story of the significant changes in domestic life in the first 40 years of the twentieth century. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach to studies of residential spaces, the author examines how questions of modernity and modern living influenced not only architectural designs but also interior furnishings, modes of transportation and ways to spend leisure time. The book discusses several case studies, some of which are known both locally and internationally (for example Casa Loma), while others such as Guild of All Arts or Sherwood have been virtually unstudied by historians of visual culture. The overall goal of the book is to put Toronto on the map of scholars of urban design and architecture and to uncover previously unknown histories of design, craft and domesticity in Toronto. This study will be of interest not only to the academic community (namely architects, designers, craftspeople and scholars of these disciplines, along with social historians), but also the general public interested in local history and/or visual culture.

Book Design after Capitalism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Matthew Wizinsky
  • Publisher : MIT Press

Download or read book Design after Capitalism written by Matthew Wizinsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How design can transcend the logics, structures, and subjectivities of capitalism: a framework, theoretical grounding, and practical principles. The designed things, experiences, and symbols that we use to perceive, understand, and perform our everyday lives are much more than just props. They directly shape how we live. In Design after Capitalism, Matthew Wizinsky argues that the world of industrial capitalism that gave birth to modern design has been dramatically transformed. Design today needs to reorient itself toward deliberate transitions of everyday politics, social relations, and economies. Looking at design through the lens of political economy, Wizinsky calls for the field to transcend the logics, structures, and subjectivities of capitalism—to combine design entrepreneurship with social empowerment in order to facilitate new ways of producing those things, symbols, and experiences that make up everyday life. After analyzing the parallel histories of capitalism and design, Wizinsky offers some historical examples of anticapitalist, noncapitalist, and postcapitalist models of design practice. These range from the British Arts and Crafts movement of the nineteenth century to contemporary practices of growing furniture or biotextiles and automated forms of production. Drawing on insights from sociology, philosophy, economics, political science, history, environmental and sustainability studies, and critical theory—fields not usually seen as central to design—he lays out core principles for postcapitalist design; offers strategies for applying these principles to the three layers of project, practice, and discipline; and provides a set of practical guidelines for designers to use as a starting point. The work of postcapitalist design can start today, Wizinsky says—with the next project.
