Download or read book Descriptive Portraiture of Europe in Storm and Calm written by Edward King and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Portraiture of Europe in Storm and Calm: Twenty Years' Experiences and Reminiscences of an American Journalist; Sketches and Records of Noted Events, Celebrated Persons and Places, National and International Affairs in France, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, Holland, Belgium, Austria, Hungary Whereas it was merely jogging along as before: only now the events which had been but vaguely heard of, or told of long after they had transpired, were at once recited for the benefit. Of Americans with a minuteness and attention to detail which were not accord-cd them even in the countries where they took place. The cable made the appetite for Oltl news so keen that the American public presently found itself better informed as to what was occur ring ia Paris even as to the tittle-tattle of social circles than about the same class of affairs or gossip in New York or Philadelphia. Thole colonies of newly enriched Americans settled in London, in Paris, in Vienna, and in all the cities which, by their historic prestige or by their local charm, exercised powerful attraction upon those who had large m ians at their command. The American, with his open purse and genial manners, took the place in the respect of the foreign landltwd and shopkeeper which was so long held by the English nobleman, with his post-chaise and his passion for St. J ulich. Europe was pleased with its new visitors, flattered at their undisguised delight, and, while it now and then laughed at their easy atti tude and their extreme frankness, it welcomed them as one always wel comcs those who bring profit in their train. At this same period, when the American had awakened or renewed his interest in the parent lands from which his composite nationality had sprung, the Old ll'orld was entering upon a season of terrible storm, interspersed, it is true, with fitful calm, but storm quickly recurrent, violent, and sweeping in its results. Had apparently settled down, after the wars of 1854 55, and of 1859, to uninterrupted enjoyment of the rest which the party of order, in all the Continental countries, had endeavored to inaugurate after 1848. Book excerpt: The first major examination of Anthony van Dyck's work as a portraitist and an essential resource on this aspect of his illustrious career This landmark volume is a comprehensive survey of the portrait drawings, paintings, and prints of Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), one of the most celebrated portraitists of all time. His supremely elegant style and ability to convey a sense of a sitter's inner life made him a favored portraitist among high-ranking figures and royalty across Europe, as well as among his fellow artists and art enthusiasts. Showcasing the full range of Van Dyck's fascinating international career with more than 100 works, this catalogue celebrates the artist's versatility, inventiveness, and influential approach to portraiture. Works include preparatory drawings and oil sketches that shed light on Van Dyck's working process, prints that allowed his work to reach a wider audience, and grand painted portraits. Some of the masterpieces are drawn from the exceptional holdings of The Frick Collection, while other works are presented here for the first time. Also included are drawings by some of Van Dyck's contemporaries--including his teacher Peter Paul Rubens--that illuminate the lineage of his working method. With insightful contributions by a team of international scholars, this unparalleled study of Van Dyck offers a compelling case for the distinctiveness and importance of the artist's work.

Book Women and Portraits in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Women and Portraits in Early Modern Europe written by Andrea Pearson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books to treat portraits of early modern women as a discrete subject, this volume considers the possibilities and limits of agency and identity for women in history and, with particular attention to gender, as categories of analysis for women's images. Its nine original essays on Italy, the Low Countries, Germany, France, and England deepen the usefulness of these analytical tools for portraiture. Among the book's broad contributions: it dispels false assumptions about agency's possibilities and limits, showing how agency can be located outside of conventional understanding, and, conversely, how it can be stretched too far. It demonstrates that agency is compatible with relational gender analysis, especially when alternative agencies such as spectatorship are taken into account. It also makes evident the importance of aesthetics for the study of identity and agency. The individual essays reveal, among other things, how portraits broadened the traditional parameters of portraiture, explored transvestism and same-sex eroticism, appropriated aspects of male portraiture to claim those values for their sitters, and, as sites for gender negotiation, resistance, and debate, invoked considerable relational anxiety. Richly layered in method, the book offers an array of provocative insights into its subject.

Book Portraits of Medieval Eastern Europe 900 1400

Download or read book Portraits of Medieval Eastern Europe 900 1400 written by Donald Ostrowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits of Medieval Eastern Europe provides imagined biographies of twenty different figures from all walks of life living in Eastern Europe from 900 to 1400. Moving beyond the usual boundaries of speculative history, the book presents innovative and creative interpretations of the people, places, and events of medieval Eastern Europe and provides an insight into medieval life from Scandinavia to Byzantium. Each chapter explores a different figure and together they present snapshots of life across a wide range of different social backgrounds. Among the figures are both imagined and historical characters, including the Byzantine Princess Anna Porphyrogenita, a Jewish traveller, a slave, the Mongol general Sübodei, a woman from Novgorod, and a Rus’ pilgrim. A range of different narrative styles are also used throughout the book, from omniscient third-person narrators to diary entries, letters, and travel accounts. By using primary sources to construct the lives of, and give a voice to, the types of people who existed within medieval European history, Portraits of Medieval Eastern Europe provides a highly accessible introduction to the period. Accompanied by a new and interactive companion website, it is the perfect teaching aid to support and excite students of medieval Eastern Europe.

Book Portraits of Medieval Europe 800 1400

Download or read book Portraits of Medieval Europe 800 1400 written by Christian Raffensperger and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a collection of ‘imagined lives’ – individuals who, no matter their position on the social hierarchy, were crucial to the development of medieval Europe and the modern period that followed. Based on primary source materials and the latest historical research, these literary accounts of otherwise unsourced or under-sourced individuals are written by leading scholars in the field. The book’s approach transcends the limitations of both historical narrative and literary fiction, offering a research-informed presentation of real people that is enriched by informed speculation and creative storytelling. This enriched presentation of the lives of these individuals offers the quickest route to understanding medieval culture, society, and intellectual thought. Crucially, the book treats the whole of Europe, broadly defined: both conventional areas of study such as England and France, and also lesser studied but no less important areas such as eastern Europe, Iberia, and the Balkans. The reader of Portraits of Medieval Europe encounters the diversity present in the European past: the resulting portraits – unique, personal, and engaging – offer not only a wide geographical scope but also perspective on the formation of European society in its fullest form. This book is accessible and engaging for students new to medieval history as well as those wishing to expand their knowledge of medieval society.
