Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If a historian were allowed but one book on the American involvement in Vietnam, this would be it." — Foreign Affairs When first published in 1979, four years after the end of one of the most divisive conflicts in the United States, The Irony of Vietnam raised eyebrows. Most students of the war argued that the United States had "stumbled into a quagmire in Vietnam through hubris and miscalculation," as the New York Times's Fox Butterfield put it. But the perspective of time and the opening of documentary sources, including the Pentagon Papers, had allowed Gelb and Betts to probe deep into the decisionmaking leading to escalation of military action in Vietnam. The failure of Vietnam could be laid at the door of American foreign policy, they said, but the decisions that led to the failure were made by presidents aware of the risks, clear about their aims, knowledgeable about the weaknesses of their allies, and under no illusion about the outcome. The book offers a picture of a steely resolve in government circles that, while useful in creating consensus, did not allow for alternative perspectives. In the years since its publication, The Irony of Vietnam has come to be considered the seminal work on the Vietnam War.

Book The Foundations of Modern Arms Control

Download or read book The Foundations of Modern Arms Control written by Robert M. Blum and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an international history of the foundation of modern arms control, highlighting the fact that the instrument is varied, resilient, successful, and enduring. The narrative begins after the Napoleonic wars when newly arisen peace movements focused on arbitration as a path to “ending the war system.” It moves on to the international community’s embrace of “total and complete disarmament” and then to its acceptance of more limited measures by 1968, including the agreements that remain in force today. The book connects the past to the present of multiple negotiations, successful and failed, and underlines how the peace movement increasingly influenced the national policy of the major Western powers, especially the United States. It also highlights the increasing diversification of arms control players, including women and people of color as well as the countries they represented. Based on original research in multinational records and the latest scholarship, the book illustrates the reasons multilateral arms control remains a key instrument of international relations. The chapters are organized both chronologically and thematically, with the result that they cover different amounts of time in order to encompass a given issue and to capture the development of particular threads. The main narrative evolves into a decadeslong quest for a global treaty on “general and complete disarmament,” which otherwise paces the book and shapes its chapters. This book will be of much interest to students of arms control, global governance, peace studies, and International Relations.

Book The Problems and Prospects of American East Asian Relations

Download or read book The Problems and Prospects of American East Asian Relations written by John Chay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue-oriented, multidisciplinary approach to American-East Asian relations asks provocative questions and presents a thoughtful appraisal of the situation today. Using a wide range of sources-among them, recently declassified government documents-the authors examine U.S. relations with China, Japan, and Korea. Issues discussed include the"new policy" toward the People's Republic of China (Was there, in fact, a sudden shift in U.S. policy?); the attitudes of the American people and Congress toward the Republic ofChina; the friction between the United States and Japan and the implications of the existing imbalance in trade between the two countries; and the potential for continuing and increasing problems in U.S.-Korean relations. Throughout, the authors present an analysis of past and current conditions as a tool for use in formulating sound, effective policy for the future.

Book The Marine Corps and the State Department

Download or read book The Marine Corps and the State Department written by Leo J. Daugherty III and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a complete history of the partnership between the Department of State and the United States Marine Corps. From its formation in 1775, the Corps developed a close working relationship with the diplomatic service of the Continental Congress and later, in 1798, with the newly created United States Department of State. The Marines accompanied U.S. diplomats to France in 1778 and worked closely with the State Department during the Barbary Wars and the opening of China. In 1905, an executive order by Theodore Roosevelt established a Marine Legation Guard, and the Corps played an increasingly important role in embassies across the globe. Today, the war on terrorism highlights this important relationship as Marines guard some of the most dangerous embassies in the world.
