Book The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics Volume I

Download or read book The Science and Art of Dental Ceramics Volume I written by John W. McLean and published by Quintessenz Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-11 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a no more rewarding experience in restorative dentistry than to duplicate to perfection the colour, texture and surface anatomy of the human tooth. Dental porcelain is the closest match to tooth enamel of all our restorative materials but is perhaps the most difficult to use in dental practice. A study of the science of dental porcelain will enable the dentist or technician to perfect his art since it develops an increasing awareness of the fundamental problems in construction. Preparation design, the stresses developing in porcelain restorations, the influence of opaque backgrounds on colour, surface reflectivity and light transmission in crowns are some of the complex factors that influence the success of a porcelain veneer restoration. A survey of metals, bonding systems, cements and impression materials will enable the clinician to select his materials with greater confidence. New research on the shoulder preparation for the veneer crown also sheds light on the controversy of the bevel versus the butt joint. The author has attempted to rationalise the use of both metal and alumina reinforced ceramics and to show how no ingle system can be applied universally if optimum aesthetics is to be achieved.

Book Dental Ceramics

Download or read book Dental Ceramics written by Carlos Bergmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-22 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an introduction to the mechanical behavior and degradation of dental ceramics and guides the reader through their performance under effect of oral environments. It addresses the different kinds of dental ceramics, their properties, degradation and mechanical aspects with less emphasys on the physics and chemistry involved, which makes the reading interesting for beginners in the field. In each chapter, the reader will learn about the mechanical behavior of dental ceramics and each phenomenon involved in their application, besides finding some practical examples of their use in dental clinics, their manufacturing procedures and types of degradation. The clear language and the application-oriented perspective of the book makes it suitable for both professionals and students who want to learn about dental ceramics.

Dr. Spaulding exhibited one of these crowns to a few of the men of Detroit who were enthusiastic in the use of porcelain, at a meeting of the Detroit Dental Society, early in 1903. In June of the same year he gave the first clinic ever given in this work at the annual meeting of the Michigan State Dental Society held at Petoskey. Later in the year Dr. Land and Dr. Spaulding gave a joint clinic at Rochester, where the work met with an enthusiastic reception and was started on its way to a prominent place among the good things in artistic dentistry. In December of the same year Dr. Spaulding demonstrated the crown before a meeting in New York City. The author also exhibited one of these crowns to a group of friends while attending a meeting of the Institute of Dental Pedagogics held in Buffalo during the last week of December of the same year, and also enjoyed the distinction of making the only practical case of the jacket crown made at the Fourth International Dental Congress held at St. Louis in August, 1904. This clinic was reported in the proceedings of the meeting and also described in The Items of Interest, also in a French journal published in Paris, France. Dr. W. C. Herbert gave a very instructive table clinic at the same meeting. Probably no other valuable addition to the possibilities of dental art was ever so eagerly welcomed by a few, so admired and neglected by the profession in general, as the jacket crown. Even after fifteen years of successful service by these crowns there are men of great prominence crying out against them, claiming that they are impractical, as teeth must "breathe" to remain in a normal condition. In spite of this, however, hundreds of teeth are "holding...
