Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a tremendous surge of interest in varied aspects of primate biology, encompassing virtually all disciplines of the biological sciences. Regardless of whether these studies have been approached from a paleontological, morphological, developmental, biochemical, neuroanatomical, or behavioral point of view, one under lying theme has been a common interest in the possible phylogenetic relationships suggested by the results of such studies. In some cases, sound taxonomic principles have not been followed in the interpretation of these data, and this has led to skepticism among many taxonomists with regard to the validity of some of the genealogical relationships and conclusions suggested by comparative studies of living primates. It is generally agreed that the fossil record alone provides the essential time dimension for directly observing changes in characteristics, but unfortunately this record is limited both in the number of genera represented and particularly in the incomplete nature of the available preserved material. On the other hand, extensive comparative analyses of numerous characteristics in living primates have provided additional insight into possible phylogenetic relationships, despite the lack of a time dimension. Such studies of both fossil and living primates are enhanced considerably by a cladistic analysis of the probable primitive (ancestral) or advanced (derived) condition of each character state discussed, based upon their distribution (and ontogeny, wherever possible) in a wide variety of primate and nonprimate taxa, including other eutherian mammals, marsupials, mono tremes, and reptiles.

Book excerpt: Disorders of Hemoglobin stands tall as the definitive work on the genetics, pathophysiology, and clinical management of hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia. Drs. Steinberg, Forget, Higgs, and Nagel have gathered the world authorities on the science and clinical management of these disorders and created the authoritative textbook for researchers and clinicians alike.Authors describe the scientific basis of clinical features and provide clinicians with a clear background of disorders they treat and scientists with an essential link between their research and its clinical manifestation. Disorders of Hemoglobin is the only single-source reference on hemoglobinopathies for hematologists, pediatricians, clinical investigators, and geneticists worldwide.

Book Evolution after Gene Duplication

Download or read book Evolution after Gene Duplication written by Katharina Dittmar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-09 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gene duplication has long been believed to have played a major role in the rise of biological novelty through evolution of new function and gene expression patterns. The first book to examine gene duplication across all levels of biological organization, Evolution after Gene Duplication presents a comprehensive picture of the mechanistic process by which gene duplication may have played a role in generating biodiversity. Key Features: Explores comparative genomics, genome evolution studies and analysis of multi-gene families such as Hox, globins, olfactory receptors and MHC (immune system) A complete post-genome treatment of the topic originally covered by Ohno's 1970 classic, this volume extends coverage to include the fate of associated regulatory pathways Taps the significant increase in multi-gene family data that has resulted from comparative genomics Comprehensive coverage that includes opposing theoretical viewpoints, comparative genomics data, theoretical and empirical evidence and the role of bioinformatics in the study of gene duplication This up-to-date overview of theory and mathematical models along with practical examples is suitable for scientists across various levels of biology as well as instructors and graduate students.

Book Human Hemoglobin Genetics

  • Author : G.R. Honig
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3709187982

Download or read book Human Hemoglobin Genetics written by G.R. Honig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discovery in the late 1940's that sickle cell anemia is a "molecular disease" of hemoglobin was the crucial advance that gave birth to the scientific discipline of human molecular genetics. In subsequent years, with the continued expansion of knowledge about the biology and genetics of the hemoglobins, and particularly as a result of the characterization of the very large numbers of globin gene mutations, the human hemoglobin system has remained as the premier model of gene expression at the molecular level in man. With the recent explosion of new information about the genetic properties of the hemoglobins, it appears inevitable that this gene system will continue to occupy a unique position in human molecular genetics for many years in the future. Hemoglobin genetics has also recently come of age as a diagnostic and clinical discipline. The heightening of public awareness in recent years about sickle cell disease, thalassemia, and other inherited disorders has brought increasing demands for carrier detection services as well as for genetic counseling and education. The more recent development of prac tical and reliable methods for the antenatal diagnosis of hemoglobin dis orders has further increased the scope of clinical hemoglobin genetics, and it can be anticipated that these potent diagnostic techniques will have increasing application in the years ahead.
