Book Free University Berlin

Download or read book Free University Berlin written by Gabriel Feld and published by Exemplary Projects. This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin Free University is an imagination of what a building might be - a building designed to function as a piece of the city, adapting to the needs of its users while generating opportunities for social interaction. The university offers a window onto the politicized and optimistic discourse of the Sixties and Seventies, but at the same time illuminates contemporary debates around large projects of infrastructure and public space. This extensive study of the building combines texts with a visual survey containing specifically commissioned photographs as well as archive material, plans and construction details.

Book Koch Partner 1970 2000

Download or read book Koch Partner 1970 2000 written by Norbert Koch and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Koch + Partner recently made the headlines when they won the competition to design the new Terminal 2 at Munich Airport -- nevertheless the architectural community has long been aware of this office. Their architecture does not consist of singular, extravagant constructions but is characterised by buildings which harmonise with the townscape, expertly serving their purpose. Their forms are clear and calm, blending with the existing structures and simultaneously enhancing them. The present book documents the work of this interdisciplinary team over the previous three decades. The full range of their work is considered -- from extensive urban planning projects to the realisation of multi-storey buildings. It also reveal how a sense of team spirit and partnership can be used to the advantage of not only private and public clients but also the user.

Book Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment

Download or read book Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment written by Henri Lefebvre and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment is the first publication in any language of the only book devoted to architecture by Henri Lefebvre. Written in 1973 but only recently discovered in a private archive, this work extends Lefebvre’s influential theory of urban space to the question of architecture. Taking the practices and perspective of habitation as his starting place, Lefebvre redefines architecture as a mode of imagination rather than a specialized process or a collection of monuments. He calls for an architecture of jouissance—of pleasure or enjoyment—centered on the body and its rhythms and based on the possibilities of the senses. Examining architectural examples from the Renaissance to the postwar period, Lefebvre investigates the bodily pleasures of moving in and around buildings and monuments, urban spaces, and gardens and landscapes. He argues that areas dedicated to enjoyment, sensuality, and desire are important sites for a society passing beyond industrial modernization. Lefebvre’s theories on space and urbanization fundamentally reshaped the way we understand cities. Toward an Architecture of Enjoyment promises a similar impact on how we think about, and live within, architecture.

Book The New Acropolis Museum

Download or read book The New Acropolis Museum written by Dēmētrios Pantermalēs and published by Skira Rizzoli. This book was released on 2009-09-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive look at the eagerly anticipated New Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece, and the celebrated collection it houses. Marking the opening of the New Acropolis Museum, this book examines both its architecture and the archaeological treasures it was built to house. The building addresses the dramatic complexities of the collection and the site with minimalist simplicity by using three main materials—glass, stainless steel, and concrete. "There’s no way at the beginning of the twenty-first century you can try to imitate even superficially the art of 2,500 years ago," Tschumi says. The "precision of the concept was really what counted." The book provides an in-depth look at the creation of the building, set only 280 meters from the Parthenon, as well as the restoration, preservation, and housing of its exhibits through over 200 photographs, drawings, and texts.

Book Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization

Download or read book Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization written by Brendan Cantwell and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding higher education and the knowledge economy in the Age of Globalization. Today, nearly every aspect of higher education—including student recruitment, classroom instruction, faculty research, administrative governance, and the control of intellectual property—is embedded in a political economy with links to the market and the state. Academic capitalism offers a powerful framework for understanding this relationship. Essentially, it allows us to understand higher education’s shift from creating scholarship and learning as a public good to generating knowledge as a commodity to be monetized in market activities. In Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization, Brendan Cantwell and Ilkka Kauppinen assemble an international team of leading scholars to explore the profound ways in which globalization and the knowledge economy have transformed higher education around the world. The book offers an in-depth assessment of the theoretical foundations of academic capitalism, as well as new empirical insights into how the process of academic capitalism has played out. Chapters address academic capitalism from historical, transnational, national, and local perspectives. Each contributor offers fascinating insights into both new conceptual interpretations of and practical institutional and national responses to academic capitalism. Incorporating years of research by influential theorists and building on the work of Sheila Slaughter, Larry Leslie, and Gary Rhoades, Academic Capitalism in the Age of Globalization provides a provocative update for understanding academic capitalism. The book will appeal to anyone trying to make sense of contemporary higher education.

Book Gender Shrapnel in the Academic Workplace

Download or read book Gender Shrapnel in the Academic Workplace written by Ellen Mayock and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs the image of “shrapnel,” bits of scattered metal that can hit purposeful targets or unwitting bystanders, to narrate the story of workplace power and gender discrimination. The project interweaves stories of gender shrapnel with an examination of national rhetoric surrounding business, education, and law to uncover underlying phenomena that contribute to discourse on privilege and gender in the academic workplace. Using concrete examples that serve as case studies for subsequent discussion of data about women in the workforce, language use and misuse, sexual harassment, silence and shutting up, and hiring, training, promotion, and the glass ceiling, Mayock explores the deeper implications of gender inequity in the workplace.
