Book Delaware s Forgotten Folk

Download or read book Delaware s Forgotten Folk written by C. A. Weslager and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is offered not as a textbook nor as a scientific discussion, but merely as reading entertainment founded on the life history, social struggle, and customs of a little-known people."—From the Preface C. A. Weslager's Delaware's Forgotten Folk chronicles the history of the Nanticoke Indians and the Cheswold Moors, from John Smith's first encounter with the Nanticokes along the Kuskakarawaok River in 1608, to the struggles faced by these uniquely multiracial communities amid the racial and social tensions of mid-twentieth-century America. It explores the legend surrounding the origin of the two distinct but intricately intertwined groups, focusing on how their uncommon racial heritage—white, black, and Native American—shaped their identity within society and how their traditional culture retained its significance into their present. Weslager's demonstrated command of available information and his familiarity with the people themselves bespeak his deep respect for the Moor and Nanticoke communities. What began as a curious inquiry into the overlooked peoples of the Delaware River Valley developed into an attentive and thoughtful study of a distinct group of people struggling to remain a cultural community in the face of modern opposition. Originally published in 1943, Delaware's Forgotten Folk endures as one of the fundamental volumes on understanding the life and history of the Nanticoke and Moor peoples.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miriam's Heritage: A Story of the Delaware River Miriam Morgan's home is nestled among the mountains of the Delaware: a long narrow valley, hedged by hemlock-crowned hills sloping eastward to the river. A brook, after miles of wandering in the forest, finds an outlet here; leaping merrily down the southern hillside; resting quietly in the pond above the mill; dashed to glittering fragments on the wheel; then rushes foaming across the valley to join the beautiful river, which sweeps unheeding by, until, lingering at a rocky cliff, its current is divided: part hurries onward, and part returns to welcome the noisy little brook, and reflect again the grassy bank, the white cottage, and the green hills; forming one of the prettiest scenes to the eye of an artist, and the best rafting eddy to the eye of a lumberman, to be found in the country. Here millions of feet of logs and lumber are each year rafted by hardy men, who brave heat and cold, fire and flood, to cut, haul, rescue, and raft the lumber, which is their only source of revenue. Sometimes a storm overflows the mountain streams, fills the mill-ponds, bursts the dams, and sweeps away buildings, bridges, roads, trees, and lumber. Sometimes a traveller empties the hot ashes from his pipe by the roadside, or a deserted camp-fire will be fanned by the breeze into a flame, and cords of bark and acres of timber are destroyed. Book Report of the Survey of a Section of the River Delaware From One Mile Below Chester to Richmond Above Philadelphia Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Survey of a Section of the River Delaware, From One Mile Below Chester, to Richmond Above Philadelphia The duty which the Councils of Philadelphia have assigned me, in the survey of a section of the river Delaware, I have completed; and it is my consolation to know, and my privilege to assert, that I have not been faithless in the discharge of the important trust committed to me. As some accompanying remarks, with the draught of the survey, may be expected, I will endeavour to give them in as brief a detail as the nature of the case will admit. To give a formal account, in this Report, of the methods adopted in the prosecution of the survey, is deemed unnecessary; and such information would only be interesting to professional men. A history, however, of the plans and methods pursued, has been laid before a few respectable and professional gentlemen; by whom the correctness thereof was duly investigated, and from whom those certificates, which are respectfully submitted to the Councils at the close of this Report, were obtained. It may not be amiss, however, to state, that every attention was bestowed, to secure accuracy in the work, and to render the survey as full and as perfect as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North of Jasper, in the Canadian Rockies, is a large, roadless and spectacular wilderness of alpine flower meadows, glaciated peaks, canyons, waterfalls and abundant wildlife. Compared to the millions each year who visit Banff and Jasper national parks immediately to the south, this northern area sees few visitors. Fewer still have ever attempted to travel through this wilderness in one continuous trip. The first to do so was Samuel Prescott Fay in 1914. To this day, his exact route has never been duplicated. Fay and his party set out from Jasper on June 26, 1914, with five saddle horses and 16 pack horses. After a treacherous, slogging journey of 1,200 kilometres through wild, uncharted country they reached their destination on October 15, 1914, with the outfit completely intact. During his expedition, Fay kept a detailed journal (currently held at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC), which he provided to the US Biological Survey (now known as the US Fish & Wildlife Service) and to various Canadian government authorities. He also published several magazine articles about his discoveries. However, the journal in its entirety, with all his day-to-day observations, struggles and concerns, has never been published. Similarly, his maps, photographs and wildlife records have been preserved in various Canadian and US archives but never exhibited to a wider audience. Brought together for the first time in book form, they provide an early and dynamic record of an area that remains little known to this day. Complete with a large selection of never-before published photos and maps, The Forgotten Explorer is destined to become a classic of North American exploration history.

It is not a question science can answer. However, what research can do is document what experiences are desired from the perspective of the recreationist. It also can specify the conditions which are necessary for these experiences to be generated. Having identified the necessary conditions, research can then help evaluate the effectiveness of various management strategies in creating or maintaining them.
