Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) presents data on normally accepted changes in physical properties and contamination levels for military hydraulic fluids used in hydraulic test stands. This information is of importance to all users of hydraulic test stands to assure the performance data obtained on these test stands for specific components will not be adversely affected by excessive changes in fluid properties or contamination levels. The data pertains to fluids conforming to specifications MIL-PRF-5606, MIL-PRF-83282, and MIL-PRF-87257. The guidelines incorporated in the AIR are the general consensus values of knowledgeable professionals. However, the experience and judgment of engineers and operators responsible for the equipment must be relied upon to determine when the hydraulic fluid is to be replaced. This document is being revised to update the specification numbers for the fluids, to add MIL-PRF-87257, and to delete the non-aerospace rust inhibited hydraulic fluids. In addition, a maximum allowable limit for barium is being added due to the problems experienced when barium gets introduced to the aircraft hydraulic system.

Book Breakdown of Preservative Fluid MIL PRF 46170 in Aircraft Hydraulic Systems

Download or read book Breakdown of Preservative Fluid MIL PRF 46170 in Aircraft Hydraulic Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document summarized a series of laboratory tests performed to identify material forming on hydraulic system filters of fleet aircraft. Additional information obtained from outside sources is also summarized for background. Laboratory pump testing showed rapid filter dogging with small amounts of preservative fluid (MU-PRF-46l70) in the system. Similar conditions with 100% hydraulic fluid (MIL-PRF-83282) did not clog filters at these rates. Preservative fluid at elevated temperatures showed breakdown, increase in acid number, and chemical attack of test coupons while hydraulic fluid alone does not degrade. Preservative fluid is not compatible with operating aircraft hydraulic systems.

Book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants

Download or read book Chemistry and Technology of Lubricants written by Roy M. Mortier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of lubricants began in ancient times and has developed into a major international business through the need to lubricate machines of increasing complexity. The impetus for lubricant development has arisen from need, so lubricating practice has preceded an understanding of the scientific principles. This is not surprising as the scientific basis of the technology is, by nature, highly complex and interdisciplinary. However, we believe that the understanding of lubricant phenomena will continue to be developed at a molecular level to meet future challenges. These challenges will include the control of emissions from internal combustion engines, the reduction of friction and wear in and continuing improvements to lubricant performance and machinery, life-time. More recently, there has been an increased understanding of the chemical aspects of lubrication, which has complemented the knowledge and understanding gained through studies dealing with physics and engineering. This book aims to bring together this chemical information and present it in a practical way. It is written by chemists who are authorities in the various specialisations within the lubricating industry, and is intended to be of interest to chemists who may already be working in the lubricating industry or in academia, and who are seeking a chemist's view of lubrication. It will also be of benefit to engineers and technologists familiar with the industry who require a more fundamental understanding of lubricants.

  • ISBN : 9780521499118
  • Pages : 536 pages

Download or read book Cellular Solids written by Lorna J. Gibson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of their classic work on Cellular Solids, the authors have brought the book completely up to date, including new work on processing of metallic and ceramic foams and on the mechanical, electrical and acoustic properties of cellular solids. Data for commercially available foams are presented on material property charts; two new case studies show how the charts are used for selection of foams in engineering design. Over 150 references appearing in the literature since the publication of the first edition are cited. The text summarises current understanding of the structure and mechanical behaviour of cellular materials, and the ways in which they can be exploited in engineering design. Cellular solids include engineering honeycombs and foams (which can now be made from polymers, metals, ceramics and composites) as well as natural materials, such as wood, cork and cancellous bone.

Book Accelerated Testing and Validation

Download or read book Accelerated Testing and Validation written by Alex Porter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerated Testing and Validation Methods is a cross-disciplinary guide that describes testing and validation tools and techniques throughout the product development process. Alex Porter not only focuses on what information is needed but also on what tools can produce the information in a timely manner. From the information provided, engineers and managers can determine what data is needed from a test and validation program and then how to select the best, most effective methods for obtaining the data. This book integrates testing and validation methods with a business perspective so readers can understand when, where, and how such methods can be economically justified. Testing and validation is about generating key information at the correct time so that sound business and engineering decisions can be made. Rather than simply describing various testing and validation techniques, the author offers readers guidance on how to select the best tools for a particular need, explains the appropriateness of different techniques to various situations and shows how to deploy them to ensure the desired information is accurately gathered. Emphasizes developing a strategy for testing and validation Teaches how to design a testing and validation program that deliver information in a timely and cost-effective manner
