Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an absorbing and exceptionally perceptive account of how deep symbols or words of power (which tend to be a culture's normaltive language) have undergone diminishment in a contemporary postmodern society. Edward Farley explains that such diminishment does not necessarily imply their demise since traces of these symbols remain and invite their rethinking. Two introductory chapters spell out the character and prospect of deep symbols in postmodern society. Then follow five chapters, each of which considers a particular deep symbol: tradition, obligation (duty), reality, law, and hope. A concluding chapter shows the structural entanglement of these symbols with each other and their relation to the sacred and the interhuman. From the opening chapter- "Words of power, that is, deep and enduring symbols that shape the values of a society and guide the life of faith, morality, and action are subject to powerful forces of discreditation and even disenchantment. If this is so, we must find ways to recover their power or live without them." Edward Farley is Professor of Theology at Vanderbilt University and the author of many books, including Good and Evil: Interpreting a Human Condition.

Book excerpt: A groundbreaking reassessment of Symbolist artists and writers that investigates the concerns they shared with scientists of the period—the problem of subjectivity in particular. In A Forest of Symbols, Andrei Pop presents a groundbreaking reassessment of those writers and artists in the late nineteenth century associated with the Symbolist movement. For Pop, “symbolist” denotes an art that is self-conscious about its modes of making meaning, and he argues that these symbolist practices, which sought to provide more direct access to viewers and readers by constant revision of its material means of meaning-making (brushstrokes on a canvas, words on a page), are crucial to understanding the genesis of modern art. The symbolists saw art not as a social revolution, but as a revolution in sense and how to conceptualize the world. The concerns of symbolist painters and poets were shared to a remarkable degree by theoretical scientists of the period, who were dissatisfied with the strict empiricism dominant in their disciplines, which made shared knowledge seem unattainable. The problem of subjectivity in particular, of what in one's experience can and cannot be shared, was crucial to the possibility of collaboration within science and to the communication of artistic innovation. Pop offers close readings of the literary and visual practices of Manet and Mallarmé, of drawings by Ernst Mach, William James and Wittgenstein, of experiments with color by Bracquemond and Van Gogh, and of the philosophical systems of Frege and Russell—filling in a startling but coherent picture of the symbolist heritage of modernity and its consequences.

Book The New Secret Language of Symbols

Download or read book The New Secret Language of Symbols written by David Fontana and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlock the secret meanings of the symbols that surround us. The New Secret Language of Symbols is a beautifully illustrated sourcebook of symbols and symbol systems. An illuminating introduction looks at the cultural and psychological explanations of symbols - including the Jungian idea of the collective unconscious. Then follows "The World of Symbols", the heart of the book in which more than 500 symbols are presented and explained theme by theme - from the elemental symbolism of the cosmos to the multiplicity of meanings associated with manmade objects and structures. We learn, for example, about the various forms of dragon in myth, the symbolism of sacred geometry, the attributes of gods, goddesses, angels and mythic heroes, the array of associations ascribed to body parts, and the significance of such practical features as the anchor or the bridge. Interspersed with these thematic treatments are more than a dozen overviews of symbolrich cultures, religions, esoteric groups and symbol systems, ranging from ancient Egypt to the Tarot. Each overview is centred upon a major image that is decoded to expose its deeper, often cryptic, meanings - thereby giving the reader revealing insights into the thinking behind some of the world's most beautiful and intriguing art, artefacts and architecture. Throughout The New Secret Language of Symbols David Fontana has unpeeled layers of profound historical and psychological significance, probed the ancient roots of a vast range of symbols, and in the process - like a gifted archaeologist who knows exactly where to look and how to interpret what he finds - he has unearthed boundless treasures.

Book Welding Symbols On Drawings

Download or read book Welding Symbols On Drawings written by E N Gregory and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-02-28 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weld symbols on drawings was originally published in 1982 based on BS 499 (British Standards Institution 1980), ISO 2553 (International Standards Organisation 1979) and ANSI/AWS A2.4 (American Welding Society-1979) standards. These standards have been through numerous revisions over the last few years; and the current standards are ISO 2553 1992, BSEN 22553 1995, and ANSI/AWS A2.4 1998. The American system of symbolisation is currently used by approximately half of the world’s industry. Most of the rest of the world use ISO. The British system was standardised in 1933 and the latest of five revisions was published in 1995 as BSEN 22553, which is identical to ISO 2553. For many years an ISO committee has been working on combining ISO and AWS to create a combined worldwide standard, but while discussions continue this could take many years to achieve. This contemporary book provides an up-to-date review on the application of ISO and AWS standards and a comparison between them. Many thousands of engineering drawings are currently in use, which have symbols and methods of representation from superseded standards. The current European and ISO standards and the American standard are substantially similar, but the ANSI/AWS standard includes some additional symbols and also symbols for non-destructive testing. Although symbols in the different standards are similar, the arrows showing locations of welds are different, these important differences are explained. ISO contains limited information on brazed or soldered joints these are covered in ANSI/AWS. Some examples of the application of welding symbols are also included. Important differences of welding symbols for different standards are explained Provides up to date information on the ISO and AWS standards and their comparison Contains examples of the application of welded symbols

You will examine: • The roles of the subconscious and collective unconscious in shaping your identity, and why it is so hard to change “you” • The most common archetypes and what they symbolize • Global archetypes in religion, politics, and pop culture, and how they affect you • Ways to identify archetypes working in your life and the skills to change them and become more authentic. Archetypes reveal your plot and your purpose. The good news is, if you don’t like them, you can choose more empowering symbols to create a completely new story of your life.
