Book Deep Sea Pycnogonids and Crustaceans of the Americas

Download or read book Deep Sea Pycnogonids and Crustaceans of the Americas written by Michel E. Hendrickx and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the deep-sea marine invertebrates, pycnogonids and crustaceans represent ecologically important and most diverse groups of species. Yet both are still poorly understood. Sampling and exploring operations off the west and east coast of the Americas has significantly increased in the last two decades. However such operations are very costly and limited in number and frequency. In countries like Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Peru, the United States of America, and El Salvador a large effort has been made to explore the deep-sea resources and the rich diversity of the communities, resulting in a better understanding of the natural ecosystems on both coasts of America. Pycnogonids and many groups of deep-sea crustaceans have been intensively studied, from the smallest animals, like the mostly unknown benthic copepods to the largest decapods. This book presents new and updated information on various groups of deep-sea pycnogonids and crustaceans occurring off the American continent. Offering a valuable reference resource for scientists interested in this fascinating fauna, it includes review papers and new data on the deep-sea communities occurring off the USA, Mexico, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Brazil and Argentina, as well as in larger areas in both the East Pacific and the West Atlantic. As such it covers most of the current deep-water research in Latin America.

Book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska

Download or read book An Annotated Checklist of the Marine Macroinvertebrates of Alaska written by David Thomas Drumm and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current and comprehensive species list of marine invertebrates of Alaska is essential for effective management of living marine resources, sustainable fisheries, conservation of vulnerable ecosystems, and advancement of our knowledge of biodiversity and ecosystem function. Furthermore, the most current checklist available to resource managers and scientists is quite dated and limited in that it only includes the marine invertebrates of the southern coast of Alaska to California. Since that checklist was published, many new species have been described, many range extensions have been discovered, and considerable changes in higher-level systematics have been made. The checklist that we have compiled lists 3708 species and presents for each species the currently accepted scientific name and its significant synonyms, common names, type localities, geographic and depth distributions, a general statement of abundance in Alaska when known (e.g., rare, uncommon, common, abundant), and general remarks. It includes species recorded in the marine waters of Alaska from the intertidal zone, continental shelf, and upper continental slope to abyssal depths, from the Beaufort Sea at the Arctic border with Yukon, Canada; the eastern Chukchi Sea, the eastern Bering Sea, the Aleutian Islands to the western border with Russia; and the Gulf of Alaska to Dixon Entrance at the southern border with British Columbia. Sound and reliable taxonomic identifications are necessary to monitor and predict changes in the distribution and abundance of marine species. The current status and future direction of the study of Alaskan marine invertebrate biodiversity are briefly discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Antarctic Research Series, Volume 69. The Antarctic Research Series provides for the presentation of detailed scientific research results from Antarctica, particularly the results of the United States Antarctic Research Program, including monographs and long manuscripts. The series is designed to make the results of Antarctic fieldwork available. The Antarctic Research Series encourages the collection of papers on specific geographic areas within Antarctica. In addition, many volumes focus on particular disciplines, including marine biology, oceanology, meteorology, upper atmosphere physics, terrestrial biology, geology, glaciology, human adaptability, engineering, and environmental protection.

Book Pycnogonida of the West Coast of North America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pycnogonida of the West Coast of North America Classic Reprint written by Leon J. Cole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pycnogonida of the West Coast of North America The Pycnogonida collected by the Harriman Alaska Expedi tion form the basis of the material described in the following pages. They were obtained by those members of the party who devoted their attention to the invertebrate forms, Professor W. E. Ritter, Dr. W. R. Coe, and Professor Trevor Kincaid; I have also to thank Professor Kincaid for several specimens collected by him upon a previous trip to the Pribilof Islands, in 1897. In addition to the above, the Pycnogonida in the collection of the University of California, from various places along the California coast, were placed at my disposal. Finally several lots, also from California, were turned over to me by Dr. S. J. Holmes, to whom I am indebted for many courtesies. I have been generously permitted to include descriptions of all these forms, so that, with the exception of two previous notes, each describing a new species, of which one is included in the present collections, all that has been written on the littoral Pycnogonida of the west coast of North America will be found in this paper.
