Download or read book Deep Purple Fire in the Sky written by Simon Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' is such a ubiquitous rock anthem that it almost seems as if it's been out there forever. Yet the story of how this most famous of metal tracks came into being is shot-through with chance incidents, any one of which could have seen the recording stifled at birth, leaving music writers to scrabble about for another "best riff of all time" contender (and five hard-working musicians considerably less well-off.) Fire in the Sky looks in detail at this crucial period in Deep Purple's history and the making of their break-through album 'Machine Head'. The basic fact that a fire destroyed the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert is well known to most music fans, leaving Deep Purple to find somewhere else to record, but this book brings much new information to light. And although 'Smoke On The Water' was laid down while the Swiss Police hammered at the door of a roller skating rink, the band were then forced to move again, ending up at the Grand Hotel where they built a studio in the corridors using old mattresses and egg cartons for sound-proofing. In the chaos, 'Smoke on the Water' was almost forgotten. The band only roughed it out as something to play to their Montreux host, Jazz festival organiser Claude Nobs, who told them it was far too good to leave in the can. This book looks back at the events which led up to Deep Purple's bizarre and Heath Robinson-esque 'Machine Head' recording sessions in the winter of 1971. And as for that "hit to be"; 'Smoke On The Water' was not even tried out on stage, and might never have been played live at all were it not for a request from the BBC for a radio session. It went on to sell 12 million copies when issued as a single in 1973 and is probably the only record to ever generate a gold disc presented to a city. And yes, there really is a music shop in London which threatens to fine budding guitarists should they dare to try out the riff in-store. And in these times of economic hardship, isn't it inspiring to know that punitive tax rates back home were responsible for Deep Purple being in Montreux in the first place? The book moves on through 1972 and takes in the subsequent debilitating American tours where 'Machine Head' quickly became a massive selling album, even as the relentless gigging pulled Deep Purple apart. Memorabilia and many rare and unseen photographs illustrate the story, including remarkable images of the Casino fire and aftermath, and Ian Gillan with his notepad writing the lyrics to 'Smoke On The Water' in the studio. Members of the band have spoken, as well as associated crew and studio staff. The music and gigs are covered while appendices include tour dates and a discography, as well as a map showing the sites connected with the recordings. Several myths are also laid to rest: Many fans trekking to Montreux visit the wrong Grand Hotel altogether, while down the road the wealthy owners of luxury apartments sit blithely unaware of the musical history made in their living rooms. During research for this book the authors revisited the site of the recordings in Montreux with bass player Roger Glover to gain a unique insight into the album's history. As a result of this visit locals are preparing a heritage plaque to mark the site.

Book The Broken Spear Reformation Rising

Download or read book The Broken Spear Reformation Rising written by Ruth Ann Ellinger and published by Ambassador International. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fires of rebellion and freedom burn brightly in sixteenth century Scotland. The Carmichael Clan—the men of The Broken Spear—lead an uprising against the Roman Catholic Church in a quest to reveal the truth of God’s Word to all, thanks to William Tyndale’s translation of the Bible into English. William Carmichael rides through the Scottish countryside, warning and rescuing his countrymen from Church-sanctioned hangings and other persecutions though Sir John, Clan chief, advises him against an armed revolt. Peter Carmichael joins his fellow clansmen in their quest for both light and justice when his cousin is forced to serve as the mistress of King James V of Scots. Against the backdrop of Papal inquisitions, where seekers of Truth are burned at the stake, one family defends the cause of Christ – against all odds. Modern readers will marvel at the bravery and courage of the ancient Carmichael clan against the blood-soaked corruption of the papacy during Scotland’s Protestant Reformation. Endorsements What a privilege to have the opportunity to be one of the first to read The Broken Spear: Reformation Rising, the first in a new series by the award-winning author Ruth Ann Ellinger. Historical fiction with a base in true history and family ties is some of my favorite books to read and from the first page, the reader is engrossed in the familial relationships and ties and potential adventure and strife that lay ahead. Ellinger is a gifted author of intrigue and drama. Marie A. Gilmore Editor and Publisher of the award-winning Osprey Observer and Christian Voice monthly newspapers The Broken Spear by Ruth Ann Ellinger sheds a bright light on the complexities of the Scottish Reformation and its effect on the clans and people of Scotland. History comes alive through her characters’ struggles to make sense of the intrigues surrounding the Scottish court and the possible catastrophic effects those intrigues might have on Clan Carmichael. Faith and loyalty are tested and sacrifices must be made for the good of the country, the church, and most especially, for family. A fine read for fans of historical fiction set in Scotland. Carol Umberger Author of The Scottish Crown series

Book Fire in the Sky

  • Author : Gordon L. Dillow
  • Publisher : Scribner
  • Release : 2020-08-04
  • ISBN : 1501187759
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Fire in the Sky written by Gordon L. Dillow and published by Scribner. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “accessible and always entertaining” (Booklist) combination of history, pop science, and in-depth reporting offers a fascinating account of the asteroids that hit Earth long ago and those streaming toward us now, as well as how prepared we are against asteroid-caused catastrophe. One of these days, warns Gordon Dillow, the Earth will be hit by a comet or asteroid of potentially catastrophic size. The only question is when. In the meantime, we need to get much better at finding objects hurtling our way, and if they’re large enough to penetrate the atmosphere without burning up, figure out what to do about them. We owe many of science’s most important discoveries to the famed Meteor Crater, a mile-wide dimple on the Colorado Plateau created by an asteroid hit 50,000 years ago. In his masterfully researched Fire in the Sky, Dillow unpacks what the Crater has to tell us. Prior to the early 1900s, the world believed that all craters—on the Earth and Moon—were formed by volcanic activity. Not so. The revelation that Meteor Crater and others like it were formed by impacts with space objects has led to a now accepted theory about what killed off the dinosaurs, and it has opened up a new field of asteroid observation that is brimming with urgency. Dillow looks at great asteroid hits of the past and modern-day asteroid hunters and defense planning experts, including America’s first Planetary Defense Officer. Satellite sensors confirm that a Hiroshima-scale blast occurs in the atmosphere every year, and a smaller, one-kiloton blast every month. While Dillow makes clear that the objects above can be deadly, he consistently inspires awe with his descriptions of their size, makeup, and origins. Both a riveting work of popular science and a warning to not take for granted the space objects hurtling overhead, Fire in the Sky is, ultimately, a testament to our universe’s celestial wonders.

Book A Walk with Wildland Fire

Download or read book A Walk with Wildland Fire written by John D. Bailey and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wildland fire not only has become a more common topic in today’s conversations around land management, but has always been a centrally important subject for all natural resources students. John Bailey uses a hypothetical fire (the “Virginia Springs Fire”) to introduce students to concepts in fire ecology and management in a concise, readable text. This one fire event fits into the larger narrative of increasing sizes of wildfires, increasing expenses of suppression, and increasing impacts before, during, and after wildfires. It tells the story of complex, fire-adapted ecosystems in a landscape with a rich fire history and ecology that Western science and management did not understand or appreciate until recently. The fire showcases the physics and chemistry of burning, fire intensity, flame length and spread rates, and wildfire growth under a range of weather and topographic conditions. Finally, the Virginia Springs Fire leaves a diversity of impacts on the land, plants, and animals that may last only months but, for some, a century or more.

Book Chemistry

  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323141757
  • Pages : 1153 pages

Download or read book Chemistry written by Therald Moeller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry with Inorganic Qualitative Analysis is a textbook that describes the application of the principles of equilibrium represented in qualitative analysis and the properties of ions arising from the reactions of the analysis. This book reviews the chemistry of inorganic substances as the science of matter, the units of measure used, atoms, atomic structure, thermochemistry, nuclear chemistry, molecules, and ions in action. This text also describes the chemical bonds, the representative elements, the changes of state, water and the hydrosphere (which also covers water pollution and water purification). Water purification occurs in nature through the usual water cycle and by the action of microorganisms. The air flushes dissolved gases and volatile pollutants; when water seeps through the soil, it filters solids as they settle in the bottom of placid lakes. Microorganisms break down large organic molecules containing mostly carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, or phosphorus into harmless molecules and ions. This text notes that natural purification occurs if the level of contaminants is not so excessive. This textbook is suitable for both chemistry teachers and students.
