Book Negotiating Conflict and Controversy in the Early Modern Book World

Download or read book Negotiating Conflict and Controversy in the Early Modern Book World written by Alexander Samuel Wilkinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern European book world was confronted with many crises and controversies. Some conflicts were of such monumental scale that they wrought significant reconfigurations of the trade. Others were more quotidian in nature – evidence of the intensely competitive and at times predatory nature of the industry. How publishing negotiated and responded to the various crises, conflicts and disputes of the age is explored by the rich and varied interdisciplinary contributions in this volume. To succeed in the business of books, printers and publishers needed to seize the advantage in the often complex environments in which they operated. What was required was determination, resilience, and inventiveness, even in the most challenging of times.

Book Catholicism and Children s Literature in France

Download or read book Catholicism and Children s Literature in France written by Sophie Heywood and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length history of the classic French children’s author, the Comtesse de Ségur. Virtually unknown in the English-speaking world, in France, Ségur is a national icon and a cultural phenomenon. Generations of children have grown up reading her stories. This book combines a discussion of her life, her works, and their reception with a broader analysis of the cultural context of the mid-nineteenth century. It offers a unique insight into the political engagement of Catholic women through the medium of children’s literature and education, and brings out new aspects of the history of publishing aimed at children, with particular reference to the market for books for girls. With its lively subject matter and accessible style, this book will appeal not only to scholars of nineteenth-century France, but also to specialists and students interested in the fields of children’s literature, gender studies, and religious history.

Book Blason Po tique

  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Blason Po tique written by Alison Saunders and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1981 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book - the first full-length study of the blason poétique examines the evolution of this French genre in the course of the sixteenth century, but also traces its earliest heraldic origins and indicates its subsequent development into the seventeenth century. The blason is treated in general but attention is concentrated particularly upon the anatomical blasons and contreblasons written by Clément Marot and his contemporaries in the 1530s and 1540s with a revaluation of their chronology in the light of hitherto «lost» editions, and an examination of the poems themselves and their debt both to the native French tradition and to Italian influences. Parallels are traced with contemporary illustrated verse, and the study attempts to demonstrate how - far from being an ephemeral eccentricity - the genre fits into the overall pattern of sixteenth-century French verse.
