Book Deciphering India s Services Sector Growth

Download or read book Deciphering India s Services Sector Growth written by Shashanka Bhide and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a range of issues relating to the nature and implications of growth of India’s services sector, including factors contributing to the rise of services, output measurement and heterogeneity, growth of services exports, and employment in services sectors. From service tax, exchange rate and services exports, policy interest, employment potential and diversity of the sector to challenges in financial inclusion, trajectories of ICT services and contribution of education to GDP, it brings together diverse themes to highlight major concerns in the wake of the prominent role that services have played in placing India among the fast-growing economies in the world in recent years. The services sector in India accounts for more than 60 per cent of the GDP of the country and 28.6 per cent of its employed across government, private or state corporations and non-government organisations. The volume explores whether the services sector (beyond agriculture and industry) holds the promise of fulfilling the benefits from India’s demographic dividend for its economic transformation through sustainable growth. With key empirical analyses of household, enterprise and macroeconomic data for India within both formal and informal sectors, this topical book will be useful to scholars and researchers of economics, Indian economy, political economy, development economics, development studies, public policy and South Asian studies and also to development professionals, policy makers and industry specialists.

Book Understanding India s Services Revolution

Download or read book Understanding India s Services Revolution written by James P. F. Gordon and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the factors behind the recent growth of India's services sector. The high growth of services output in the 1990s was mostly due to the rapid expansion of communication, banking, business services (including the IT sector) and community services. While factors such as a high income elasticity of demand for services, increasing input usage of services by other sectors, and rising exports, were important in boosting services growth in the 1990s, supply side factors including reforms and technological advances also played significant roles. Going forward, the growth potential of Indian services exports is well known, but the paper also finds considerable scope for growth in the Indian service economy provided that deregulation continues. In addition, the paper shows that employment growth in the Indian services sector has been quite modest, thus underscoring the need for industry and agriculture to also grow rapidly.

Book Public Service Delivery in India

Download or read book Public Service Delivery in India written by Vikram K. Chand and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection looks at processes of change and reform in public service delivery in a range of states and sectors, and over time spans. The first three essays examine reforms that have improved prospects for economic growth and poverty alleviation in Bihar; improved the functioning of public sector enterprises and the power sector, and initiated improvements in education in West Bengal; and the efficient delivery of economic services in Gujarat in order to pursue a high-growth agenda. The next two essays focus on regulation in infrastructure as well as the delivery of urban services. The question of balancing greater autonomy with accountability to improve public service delivery through the use of executive agencies is also analysed. The final essay discusses how India might absorb lessons for the effective implementation of the Right to Information Act (2005) from countries such as Mexico, South Africa, and Canada. The volume shows how reform is an ongoing process that depends critically on contextual factors. These include the history of reform ideas, the capacity of the state to execute reform, and the nature of the state itself and its relationships with key actors, such as the private sector and unions.

Book Understanding China and India

Download or read book Understanding China and India written by Rollie Lal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Key to developing national security strategy is figuring out what other countries want. What are their national interests? How do they perceive them? How do they project them onto the world stage? Understanding all of this helps us to predict their behavior. In developing a national security strategy for Asia, the United States must take into account the desires of two emerging giants of the 21st century: China and India. We would be mistaken, Lal argues, if we lumped China and India together in one Asian policy, because these two countries differ greatly from one another. Based on over 120 in-depth interviews with government officials and scholars in Beijing and New Delhi, the author's research yields some surprising news about the differences between China and India. Chinese leaders define their national interest as preservation of the state and territorial unity, whereas Indian decision makers define their national interests in relation to forces beyond India, such as the forces of globalization and their geopolitical status. One factor that accounts for these differences, among the many explored in this book, is the influence of one-party rule in China and parliamentary democracy in India. Another important finding is that China and India are unlikely to pursue hostility with each other. The U.S. approach to Asia will need to take these differences into account.

Book Understanding the Indian Economy from the Post Reforms of 1991 Volume II

Download or read book Understanding the Indian Economy from the Post Reforms of 1991 Volume II written by Shrawan Kumar Singh and published by Business Expert Press. This book was released on 2020-07-13 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to provide an understanding of the economy with its nature and structure, dominance of unorganized sector, natural resources, economic and social infrastructure, demographic features, poverty, unemployment, inequality, national income, saving and investment, role of noneconomic factors, and sources of data. India evokes many images because the country is extremely heterogeneous in its resource endowments, climate, languages, and infrastructure. India provides a rich tapestry of economic and social milieu: the 22 officially recognized languages spoken by the population, with their many dialects; the caste system; and its hoary history with its rich culture and traditions. India possesses a wide and varied resource base, although domestic sources supply only a third of the country’s oil requirements at present. India’s economic performance has attracted considerable commentary and controversy. Since 1950, India’s approach to economic development has been within the framework of a mixed economy, which has resulted from both pragmatic and political considerations. The objective of this book is to provide an understanding of the economy with its nature and structure, dominance of unorganized sector, natural resources, economic and social infrastructure, demographic features, poverty, unemployment, inequality, national income, saving and investment, role of noneconomic factors, and sources of data. Despite being a part of the eight-volume series on the Indian economy, this second volume in the series is in the nature of an introductory essay designed to provide a succinct nontechnical exposition of India’s economic structure, performance, and policies.

Book Understanding India s New Political Economy

Download or read book Understanding India s New Political Economy written by Sanjay Ruparelia and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of large-scale transformations have shaped the economy, polity and society of India over the past quarter century. This book provides a detailed account of three that are of particular importance: the advent of liberal economic reform, the ascendance of Hindu cultural nationalism, and the empowerment of historically subordinate classes through popular democratic mobilizations. Filling a gap in existing literature, the book goes beyond looking at the transformations in isolation, managing to: • Explain the empirical linkages between these three phenomena • Provide an account that integrates the insights of separate disciplinary perspectives • Explain their distinct but possibly related causes and the likely consequences of these central transformations taken together By seeking to explain the causal relationships between these central transformations through a coordinated conversation across different disciplines, the dynamics of India’s new political economy are captured. Chapters focus on the political, economic and social aspects of India in their current and historical context. The contributors use new empirical research to discuss how India’s multidimensional story of economic growth, social welfare and democratic deepening is likely to develop. This is an essential text for students and researchers of India's political economy and the growth economies of Asia.
