The purpose of offering this course is to make available to them these recent significant advances in physics and technology. Accordingly, this course is organized into five parts: Part 1, Entry Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Physics and Radiation; Part 2, Entry Abla tion and Heat Transfer; Part 3, Entry Experimentation; Part 4, Entry Concepts and Technology; and Part 5, Advanced Entry Programs. It is written in such a way so that it may easily be adopted by other universities as a textbook for a two semesters senior or graduate course on the sub ject. In addition to the undersigned who served as the course instructor and wrote Chapters, 1, 2, 3 and 4, guest lecturers included: Prof. FRANKLIN K. MOORE who wrote Chapter 5 "Entry Radiative Transfer," Prof. SHIH-I PAl who wrote Chapter 6 "Entry Radiation-Magnetogasdy namics," Dr. CARL GAZLEY, Jr. who wrote Chapter 7 "Entry Deaccelera tion and Mass Change of an Ablating Body," Dr. SINCLAIRE M. Book The Effect of Lift on Entry Corridor Depth and Guidance Requirements for the Return Lunar Flight

Download or read book The Effect of Lift on Entry Corridor Depth and Guidance Requirements for the Return Lunar Flight written by Thomas J. Wong and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entry corridors for manned vehicles returning from the moon are defined consistent with requirements for avoiding radiation exposure and for limiting values of peak deceleration. It was found that the use of lift increases the depth of the entry corridor and, hence, reduces guidance accuracy requirements. Mid-course guidance requirements appear to be critical only for the flight-path angle. Increasing the energy of the transfer orbit increases the required guidance for the flight-path angle. To correct a trajectory for an error in target perigee point, it was found that application of the corrective thrust essentially parallel to the local horizontal produces the maximum change in perigee altitude for a given increment of velocity. It was also found that the energy required to effect a given change in perigee altitude is not strongly dependent on the energy of the orbit, but it was found to vary inversely with range measured from the center of the earth. For this reason, it is important to detect and correct any errors in approach trajectory at the largest possible distance from the earth.

Book Proceedings of Symposium on Aerothermoelasticity

Download or read book Proceedings of Symposium on Aerothermoelasticity written by David M. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1028 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A symposium on Aerothermoelasticity was held to present the latest significant developments in each scientific area and engineering area that comprise the component parts of this technology. New and significant contributions were presented in four technical areas consisting of dynamic aerothermoelasticity (flutter), stability and control, thermodynamics and aerodynamics (or aerothermodynamics), and structures including material and construction concepts. Categories important and significant to each technical area are discussed state-of-the-art wise. In addition, 26 separate papers are given on items of special importance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excellent book highlights all aspects of the analysis and design of buildings subject to impact, explosion and fire. It is a definitive reference book and contains 10 chapters from a wide international prospective. Three-dimensional finite element and discrete element techniques are included. They are applied to buildings such as the World Trade Center (WTC Twin Towers) and the Federal Building in Oklahoma on the basis of the designers drawings, data and other information. Many small case studies are also included. The book has a comprehensive bibliography and a large appendix providing background analysis and computer subroutines of recently developed programs.

Book Nearly Circular Transfer Trajectories for Descending Satellites

Download or read book Nearly Circular Transfer Trajectories for Descending Satellites written by George M. Low and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplified expressions describing the transfer from a satellite orbit to the point of atmospheric entry are derived. The expressions are limited to altitude changes that are small compared with the earth's radius, and velocity changes that are small compared with satellite velocity. They are further restricted to motion about a spherical, nonrotating earth. The transfer trajectory resulting from the application of thrust in any direction at any point in an elliptic orbit is considered. Expressions for errors in distance (miss distance) and entry angle due to an initial misalinement and magnitude error of the deflecting thrust are presented. The guidance and accuracy requirements to establish a circular orbit, and orbit corrections are also discussed.

Book Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles

Download or read book Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles written by Holt Ashley and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-27 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Written by one of the leading aerospace educators of our time, each sentence is packed with information. An outstanding book." — Private Pilot "Illuminated throughout by new twists in explaining familiar concepts, helpful examples and intriguing ‘by-the-ways.’ A fine book." — Canadian Aeronautics and Space Journal This classic by a Stanford University educator and a pioneer of aerospace engineering introduces the complex process of designing atmospheric flight vehicles. An exploration of virtually every important subject in the fields of subsonic, transonic, supersonic, and hypersonic aerodynamics and dynamics, the text demonstrates how these topics interface and how they complement one another in atmospheric flight vehicle design. The mathematically rigorous treatment is geared toward graduate-level students, and it also serves as an excellent reference. Problems at the end of each chapter encourage further investigation of the text’s material, the study of fresh ideas, and the exploration of new areas.
