Book excerpt: In an arena built by love and supported by devotion, two couples, close friends, recent empty nesters are suddenly confronted by active sexual desire that had been just a pleasant thought for many years. Each wants the other’s spouse. Self-serving contends with concern and compassion. They all like each other very much. The story takes place from late 1988 to early 1990. The “double standard” is indicted and brought to trial. Much is about Laura, a teacher who had capably followed society’s syllabus, guided by the headmaster, her husband. She would have welcomed having tea with Ibsen’s Nora. Circumstance affects her comfortable acquiescence. Others give significant testimony. Entwined triangles bring thrill and conflict. Vivid dissection of sexual relationship and friendship reveals the misconceptions from attitude and clouded communication that cause missteps and disappointment. And there is a clear, insightful depiction of a man’s newly manifested sexual obsession beyond pleasure and affection. These are responsible people with typical aspirations and frailties. Although they are excessively self-serving at times, they care well for their families and contribute to the welfare of others. Eventually they become challenged by the price for their self-indulgence. Motivation is probed. Reader reaction will be diverse and controversial.

Book excerpt: "I will pay you to sleep with my wife." Jarrah Miyan, a young half-caste aboriginal man, is supposed to seduce a white woman into an affair so her greed-driven husband can gain full control of her inheritance, including the rare collection of black opals she keeps under lock and key. When he walks into the study to meet the poor chit he's to take advantage of, he expects to find an aging woman who smells of stale perfume and gin. Who he finds though is the most beautiful woman he's ever laid eyes on -- the same woman whose pale thighs had been wrapped around him just a few hours earlier as she'd begged him to give her pleasure. After their night of passion together, Emily Holtz doubted she would ever see Jarrah again. To have him standing before her now, asking for employment at her cattle station, was not a situation she had prepared herself for. She agrees to hire him on one condition. He has to spy on her husband and get her the incriminating evidence she needs to apply for a divorce. She's spent years in a miserable arranged marriage, and she's desperate to escape her dangerous husband, a man who will stop at nothing, including murder, to get what he wants. Their feelings for each other growing, Jarrah worries about what will happen when Emily discovers that he's been working for both her and her husband. Not that they could ever really be together, as society would never accept that...but would Emily be willing to risk everything for Jarrah?

Book Uncomfortable Situations

Download or read book Uncomfortable Situations written by Daniel M. Gross and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is a hostile environment? How exactly can feelings be mixed? What on earth might it mean when someone writes that he was “happily situated” as a slave? The answers, of course, depend upon whom you ask. Science and the humanities typically offer two different paradigms for thinking about emotion—the first rooted in brain and biology, the second in a social world. With rhetoric as a field guide, Uncomfortable Situations establishes common ground between these two paradigms, focusing on a theory of situated emotion. Daniel M. Gross anchors the argument in Charles Darwin, whose work on emotion has been misunderstood across the disciplines as it has been shoehorned into the perceived science-humanities divide. Then Gross turns to sentimental literature as the single best domain for studying emotional situations. There’s lost composure (Sterne), bearing up (Equiano), environmental hostility (Radcliffe), and feeling mixed (Austen). Rounding out the book, an epilogue written with ecological neuroscientist Stephanie Preston provides a different kind of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Uncomfortable Situations is a conciliatory work across science and the humanities—a groundbreaking model for future studies.

Book excerpt: In 1656, a planter in colonial Maryland tortured and killed one of his slaves, an Angolan man named Antonio who refused to work the fields. Over three centuries later, a Detroit labor organizer named Simon Owens watched as strikebreakers wielding bats and lead pipes beat his fellow autoworkers for protesting their inhumane working conditions. Antonio and Owens had nothing in common but the color of their skin and the economic injustices they battled—yet the former is what defines them in America’s consciousness. In A Dreadful Deceit, award-winning historian Jacqueline Jones traces the lives of these two men and four other African Americans to reveal how the concept of race has obscured the factors that truly divide and unite us. Expansive, visionary, and provocative, A Dreadful Deceit explodes the pernicious fiction that has shaped American history.

Book A Christian Understanding of Deception

Download or read book A Christian Understanding of Deception written by R. Douglas Wardrop and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. John 10:10a NKJV Satan is the god of this world (see 2 Corinthians 4:4 and 1 John 5:19), is the “father of lies” (see John 8:44), and his job description is to “steal, and to kill, and to destroy.” In order to achieve his aims, he most often lies to us and deceives us. Satan often disguises his forces to make them look like natural problems so you’ll fight them with natural weapons. But you cannot fight a spiritual foe with natural weapons but with spiritual weapons, i.e. speaking God’s word to the devil and his demons. Unfortunately satan can disguise himself as an “angel of light,” so it is possible to be deceived by an innocent and apparently correct Christian teaching (see Matthew 24:4, 24:5; Mark 13:5, 13:6; and Luke 21:8). Often these inaccurate or incomplete teachings focus on God’s love and blessings (thus appealing to our flesh and so lead us astray (see Mark 13:22 and 1 Timothy 4:1) and do not mention His greatness, or our need to obey Him and have a reverential fear of Him. This book aims to help reveal satan’s lie and deception strategies and so empower Christians to live the Christian life that God intended. “Great book, interesting and well written based on solid evidence, documented, and not on flights of fancy or fanciful digressions or comforting in a fantastic book where you can find and discover the birth of the religion best known to the world. Through the dialogue structure, the reading is easier even if the terminology is researched and complex. At first glance it may seem pedantic, but you will be fascinated by the events described that so well dot the book.” -- Kalyan Panja , Booktica - Book Reviews
