Book Total Absorption Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich Nuclei Across the N

Download or read book Total Absorption Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich Nuclei Across the N written by Kathleen Connor Goetz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decay spectroscopy of neutron rich nuclei near doubly magic 78Ni [78-Nickel] is relevant to nuclear structure and astrophysics as well as reactor and neutrino physics. [upper case beta]-decay [betadecay] calorimetry studies are essential to reconstruct the decay strength function and is used to overcome the problems arising from the high density of states leading to nuclear Pandemonium. The Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer, currently located in HRIBF at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, collected data on 25 fission products of 238U [238- Uranium] during a run in March 2015. Analysis of the 84,̳85,̳86Br [84, 85 and 86-Bromine] data from the March 2015 run indicates a significant modification of the [upper case beta]-strength [betastrength] function when compared with previous measurements for all three nuclei, including the introduction of new high energy states not previously detected. The cases of 84,̳85,̳86Br will be discussed in concert with shell model predictions. 85Br [85-Bromine] is a singly magic N=50 nucleus. Through the study of N=49,50,51 nuclei the decay properties around a neutron shell closure governed by the interplay between core and valence nucleon excitations and Gamow-Teller decay in a 78Ni [78-Nickel] core can be understood and provide a pinpoint for the study of more exotic nuclei.

Book Nuclear Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich A

Download or read book Nuclear Spectroscopy of Neutron Rich A written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the beta decay of neutron rich nuclides of the A = 147 chain was carried out at the TRISTAN isotope separator. Half lives of 14'Cs, 147Ba and 147La were measured. Six gamma lines are assigned to 147Cs decay. A decay scheme for 147Ba with levels up to 2 MeV is proposed for the first time. A partial decay scheme for 147La is proposed, which confirms the previously existing one, with five new levels added from the present work.

Book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy

Download or read book Laser Assisted Nuclear Decay Spectroscopy written by Kara Marie Lynch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-16 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work details an application of collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy for the separation of short-lived isomeric states and their subsequent study with decay spectroscopy. It reports the successful construction of a novel decay spectroscopy apparatus that can operate at pressures below 1 x 10^-9 mbar. The method is demonstrated by separating the nuclear ground and isomeric states of 204Fr and performing alpha-decay spectroscopy. An equivalent mass spectrometer would require 4.6 million times as much resolution to achieve the same result. This work unambiguously confirms the existence of a second isomeric state in 204Fr. The author also demonstrates the effectiveness of this method for laser spectroscopy and identification of hyperfine-structure components with energy tagging. This method was successfully used in 202Fr to identify ground and isomeric states. The measurement of 202Fr reported in this thesis demonstrates a factor of 100 improvement in sensitivity compared to state-of-the-art fluorescence techniques. The work reported in this thesis won the author the IOP Nuclear Physics Group Early Career Prize.

Book Beta delayed Neutron Spectroscopy of Fission Fragments Using the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy

Download or read book Beta delayed Neutron Spectroscopy of Fission Fragments Using the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy written by Stanley Vincent Paulauskas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work details the study of nuclear decay in the region of doubly magic 78Ni using the Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE). This detector system uses the time-of-flight technique to measure the energy of beta-delayed neutrons. VANDLE uses a fully digital data acquisition system equipped with timing algorithms developed as part of the experimental work. The experiment examined nearly 30 beta-delayed neutron precursors produced at the Hollifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This work discusses three of these nuclei: 77,78Cu and 84Ga. Results from the experiment provide details of the Gamow-Teller decay in neutron rich nuclei near 78Ni.

Book Beta and Beta delayed Neutron Decay of the N

Download or read book Beta and Beta delayed Neutron Decay of the N written by Ryan Dunlop and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN) is a new high-efficiency $\gamma$-ray spectrometer designed for use in decay spectroscopy experiments with low-energy radioactive ion beams provided by TRIUMF's Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC-I) facility. The high-efficiency GRIFFIN array comprises 16 Compton-suppressed large-volume HPGe clovers, and is designed to be used with a suite of ancillary detectors, providing a powerful and versatile tool for studying exotic nuclei. The structures of $N = 82$ nuclei below doubly-magic $^{132}$Sn are crucial for calculations of the astrophysical r-process as these isotopes form `waiting-points' that play an important role in the formation and shape of the second $r$-process abundance peak. Many of the most neutron-rich $N = 82$ nuclei are, however, out of reach to the current generation of radioactive beam facilities and their properties must be predicted. In the past, shell-model calculations for the half-lives of these nuclei have been performed by adjusting the quenching of the Gamow-Teller (GT) operator in order to reproduce the half-life of $^{130}$Cd. However, the calculated half-lives of the nuclei below $^{130}$Cd are known to be systematically too large. A recent measurement of the $^{130}$Cd half-life with EURICA indicated a shorter half-life of $^{130}$Cd, which would lead to a re-scaling of the GT quenching by a constant factor for all nuclei in the region and potentially resolves the discrepancy. However, the reduced quenching of the GT operator implied by these results creates a new discrepancy in the calculated half-life of the $N=82$ isotope $^{131}$In. Half-life measurements of nuclei in this region are complicated due to the presence of $\beta$-decaying isomers with comparable half-lives and large $\beta n$ branches, making $\gamma$-ray photo-peak gating with a high-resolution, high-efficiency, $\gamma$-ray spectrometer an ideal method to measure each of the isomeric half-lives. In this work, measurements of the half-lives of the $^{128-130}$Cd isotopes were performed. The half-life of the $N=82$ $r$-process waiting point nucleus $^{130}$Cd was measured to be 126(4)~ms confirming the EURICA measurements and in strong disagreement with the earlier measurements of 162(7)~ms and 195(35)~ms. A detailed data set for the $\beta$ and $\beta n$ decay of $^{131}$In was also analyzed. The $\beta$ decay from the single proton hole nucleus $^{131}$In to the single neutron hole nucleus $^{131}$Sn is of current interest with respect to advancing our understanding of nuclear forces and shell evolution in this region, including modelling the astrophysical $r$-process. In this work, three different $\beta$ decaying states in $^{131}$In were studied in detail, providing new information about the shell structure of $^{131}$Sn. The half-lives of these three $\beta$ decaying states of $^{131}$In measured in this work agree with the previous measurements. The half-life of each $\beta$ decaying state of $^{131}$In is significantly longer than the half-life predicted from shell-model calculations.
