Book Systems of Conservation Laws 1

Download or read book Systems of Conservation Laws 1 written by Denis Serre and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems of conservation laws arise naturally in physics and chemistry. To understand them and their consequences (shock waves, finite velocity wave propagation) properly in mathematical terms requires, however, knowledge of a broad range of topics. This book sets up the foundations of the modern theory of conservation laws, describing the physical models and mathematical methods, leading to the Glimm scheme. Building on this the author then takes the reader to the current state of knowledge in the subject. The maximum principle is considered from the viewpoint of numerical schemes and also in terms of viscous approximation. Small waves are studied using geometrical optics methods. Finally, the initial-boundary problem is considered in depth. Throughout, the presentation is reasonably self-contained, with large numbers of exercises and full discussion of all the ideas. This will make it ideal as a text for graduate courses in the area of partial differential equations.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the International Conference on Nonlinear Hyperbolic Problems held in St. Etienne, France, 1986 it was decided to start a two years cycle of conferences on this very rapidly expanding branch of mathematics and it·s applications in Continuum Mechanics and Aerodynamics. The second conference toolc place in Aachen, FRG, March 14-18, 1988. The number of more than 200 participants from more than 20 countries all over the world and about 100 invited and contributed papers, well balanced between theory, numerical analysis and applications, do not leave any doubt that it was the right decision to start this cycle of conferences, of which the third will be organized in Sweden in 1990. ThiS volume contains sixty eight original papers presented at the conference, twenty two cif them dealing with the mathematical theory, e.g. existence, uniqueness, stability, behaviour of solutions, physical modelling by evolution equations. Twenty two articles in numerical analysis are concerned with stability and convergence to the physically relevant solutions such as schemes especially deviced for treating shoclcs, contact discontinuities and artificial boundaries. Twenty four papers contain multidimensional computational applications to nonlinear waves in solids, flow through porous media and compressible fluid flow including shoclcs, real gas effects, multiphase phenomena, chemical reactions etc. The editors and organizers of the Second International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems would lilce to thanlc the Scientific Committee for the generous support of recommending invited lectures and selecting the contributed papers of the conference.

Book The Legacy of the Inverse Scattering Transform in Applied Mathematics

Download or read book The Legacy of the Inverse Scattering Transform in Applied Mathematics written by J. L. Bona and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swift progress and new applications characterize the area of solitons and the inverse scattering transform. There are rapid developments in current nonlinear optical technology: Larger intensities are more available; pulse widths are smaller; relaxation times and damping rates are less significant. In keeping with these advancements, exactly integrable soliton equations, such as $3$-wave resonant interactions and second harmonic generation, are becoming more and more relevant inexperimental applications. Techniques are now being developed for using these interactions to frequency convert high intensity sources into frequency regimes where there are no lasers. Other experiments involve using these interactions to develop intense variable frequency sources, opening up even morepossibilities. This volume contains new developments and state-of-the-art research arising from the conference on the ``Legacy of the Inverse Scattering Transform'' held at Mount Holyoke College (South Hadley, MA). Unique to this volume is the opening section, ``Reviews''. This part of the book provides reviews of major research results in the inverse scattering transform (IST), on the application of IST to classical problems in differential geometry, on algebraic and analytic aspects ofsoliton-type equations, on a new method for studying boundary value problems for integrable partial differential equations (PDEs) in two dimensions, on chaos in PDEs, on advances in multi-soliton complexes, and on a unified approach to integrable systems via Painleve analysis. This conference provided aforum for general exposition and discussion of recent developments in nonlinear waves and related areas with potential applications to other fields. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers interested in mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Book Admissible Solutions of Hyperbolic Conservation Laws

Download or read book Admissible Solutions of Hyperbolic Conservation Laws written by Tai-Ping Liu and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1981 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider a system of n conservation laws: [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol]∂u [over] [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol]∂t + [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol]∂f(u) [over] [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol]∂x = 0. The system is assumed to be strictly hyperbolic, but not necessarily genuinely nonlinear in the sense of Peter Lax (Hyperbolic systems of conservation laws, 1957). Our purpose is to study the regularity, large-time behavior and the approximation of the solution of the initial-value problem. Our analysis is based on the random choice method, using the solution of the Riemann problem, as building blocks.
