Book Assessing the Student Loan Debt Burden of First Generation College Students Do They Face Additional Difficulties in Debt Repayment

Download or read book Assessing the Student Loan Debt Burden of First Generation College Students Do They Face Additional Difficulties in Debt Repayment written by Ruochen Wang and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a unique demographic group, first-generation college students are receiving an increasing amount of attention in recent years both as a result of their growing population and their implications on upward mobility. However, first-generation college students have characteristics that can facilitate their difficulties in receiving postsecondary education, especially in financial terms. This thesis tries to answer the question of whether first-generation college students, compared to continuing-generation students, take out greater amounts of government educational loans in financing their postsecondary education, and whether first-generation college student face greater student loan debt burdens at age 25 and age 30. Using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 (NLSY97) and a fixed effects Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model, this thesis found that first-generation students take out smaller amounts of government educational loans before and while attending their first postsecondary institution, and there is not enough evidence that the debt repayment pattern of first-generation students is significantly different from that of continuing-generation students. Policy implications of this thesis include continuous academic attention to first-generation college students, as well as the importance of collecting and administering high-quality data so that researchers are better able to conduct analyses that produce reliable results to advise policymaking.

Book The impact of student loans in the U S on public service career opportunities

Download or read book The impact of student loans in the U S on public service career opportunities written by Thomas Weingartner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Miscellaneous, grade: 1,0, Viriginia Commonwealth University (Viriginia Commonwealth University), course: Urban Economics, language: English, abstract: At a time when the government estimates that two million new teachers will be needed in the next decade, the large student-loan debt that college graduates face may deter students from entering public-service careers like teaching and social work. More generally, this circumstance will lead to a lack of education and will ultimately create for today’s generation and future generations unsolvable problems. In the media the key phrase “sustainable development” is often used, but nobody connects it to the field of education. This is a sad fact, for education is a fundamental value of every well functioning society, offering not only pure knowledge, but also developing important guidelines and moral norms that enable a human community to survive and to flourish. The US is struggling right now, still facing issues like racism, discrimination and violence that were said to be solved. Consequently minorities unify and segregate themselves into isolation; the gap between rich and poor continues to grow. If the government does not realize that lack of education is the root of ongoing conflicts and sticks on its course underfund education, the gap between wealth and poverty is going to become a crucial obstacle for a modern America that is continuing to claim a hegemony role worldwide.

Book Paying it Back

Download or read book Paying it Back written by Elizabeth A. Bremer and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Student loan burden has been an increasingly popular topic in the mainstream media. As the number of student loans grows nation-wide, there are studies looking at how repayment is impacting graduates several years out, but few that study students' perceptions on their loans at the conclusion of their undergraduate education. This paper examines student perceptions and awareness of student loan debt burden immediately prior to graduation and explores information on how students are anticipating their post-college lives and the prospect of managing student loan repayment. A closed-ended survey was administered at a large 4-year private institution and the results were used to draw conclusions on students' perceptions and awareness of their student loan debt prior to graduation; students' sources of information regarding student loans; if there are connections between perceived loan burden and current/future decision making; and if students value their student loan debt burden with respect to their satisfaction with the education they just received"--Page 2.

Book The Work of the University

Download or read book The Work of the University written by Richard C. Levin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging collection of speeches and essays, published on the occasion of Richard C. Levin’s tenth anniversary as president of Yale University, reflects both the range of his intellectual passions and the depth of his insight into the work of the university. By turns analytical, reflective, and exhortatory, Levin explores what it means to be a world-class university, how the university intersects with local and global communities, and why a liberal education matters. He offers personal recollections of schools, teachers, and traditions of particular importance in his own life. And, returning to his roots as a professor of economics, he discusses the competitiveness of American industry and the relations between the market economy and American democracy. Throughout these writings Levin illuminates and inspires. Always his affection for the university shines through. Whether greeting incoming freshmen, meditating on September 11, remembering an intellectual hero, saluting graduating seniors, addressing the League of Women Voters, or celebrating Yale’s Tercentennial, Levin, by example, shows what a liberal education can achieve.
