Download or read book Death s Deceiver written by Lynn Bridgers and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Machebeuf has been overshadowed for more than a century by his friend and fellow priest, Jean Baptiste Lamy. In this biography Machebeuf comes into his own, emerging as a major figure in the spread of European Catholicism through the American West. Although not physically robust, Machebeuf's nickname "Trompe la Mort" ("Death's Deceiver") reflected his optimistic nature and indomitable will. During his lifetime spent in Ohio, Santa Fe, and Denver, Machebeuf survived typhoid, cholera, dysentery, and malaria. Immortalized as Father Vaillant in Willa Cather's Death Comes for the Archbishop, Machebeuf reminds us of the frequently overlooked French influence in New Mexico culture. Initially hated because of conflicts with local priests, Machebeuf soon developed a broad understanding and love of Hispanic culture. In his role as pastor he faced many challenges that resonate today--the friction of diverse cultures, the secularization of society, and a spectacular growth in the population of the West.

Download or read book The Many Deaths of Peter and Paul written by David L. Eastman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early accounts of one of the most famous scenes in Christian history, the death of Peter, do not present a single narrative of the events, for they do not agree on why Peter requested to die in the precise way that he allegedly did. Over time, historians and theologians have tended to smooth over these rough edges, creating the impression that the ancient sources all line up in a certain direction. This impression, however, misrepresents the evidence. The reason for Peter's inverted crucifixion is not the only detail on which the sources diverge. In fact, such disagreement can be seen concerning nearly every major narrative point in the martyrdom accounts of Peter and Paul. The Many Deaths of Peter and Paul shows that the process of smoothing over differences in order to create a master narrative about the deaths of Peter and Paul has distorted the evidence. This process of distortion not only blinds us to differences in perspective among the various authors, but also discourages us from digging deeper into the contexts of those authors to explore why they told the stories of the apostolic deaths differently in their contexts. David L. Eastman demonstrates that there was never a single, unopposed narrative about the deaths of Peter and Paul. Instead, stories were products of social memory, told and re-told in order to serve the purposes of their authors and their communities. The history of the writing of the many deaths of Peter and Paul is one of contextualized variety.
Download or read book Let God Be True and Every Man a Liar written by Victor Perez and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We as the church are being looked at by the lost world as a bunch of hypocrites. We need to seriously consider this viewpoint in how we are evangelizing the lost. Currently there are 3,500 people leaving the church from all denominations daily. This is definitely not the Lord's plan for the Body of Christ. Another statistic showed that from the years 2000 to 2008, 20 million people left the North American church from all denominations. Matthew 11: 28 (NAS) reads, "Come to Me, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest." When the Lord Jesus Christ uses the term all, He is referring to every single person on Earth. When the church uses the term all, they are referring to only those who belong to their denomination. This should not be. I truly believe that the Lord Jesus wants to redefine who He wants to be in each and every one of our lives, if we let Him. The question is, do we want Him to, or are we comfortable with where we are operating as different denominational churches? What the world is experiencing currently is testimony that business as usual has ended for the entire church world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You'll Learn from Jacob, Who Moved from Manipulation to Trust in God. Jacob is a troubling character in the Old Testament. He is conniving and he is spiritual too. He has moments of strong faith as well as of fear. His family is sometimes in disarray, and yet at the end he is the one who sets it straight. Jacob the Patriarch is a bit too much like us -- with very human strengths and weaknesses, but a man with a striving for spiritual things. From this imperfect man we learn important lessons of faith. especially, about God's grace. The events described in Jacob's story comprise most of Genesis chapters 25-49. If you haven't read the Old Testament much, you'll be pleased to find that God will speak to you here -- loud and clear. Each of the seven detailed lessons include probing discussion questions and can be used for personal enrichment, by small groups and classes, and by teachers and preachers.
