Book excerpt: Dear Katy, Love Dad is sweeping family saga, rich with emotional weight. It is a story about personal discovery and uncondtional love. When Will Reed inherits the old hat box, he finds letters that his grandfather wrote to his daughter, Will´s mom. The letters are beautifully written and give Dear Katy, Love Dad its heart and tone, and a mood that resonates long after you put the book down. Will´s grandfather was estranged from his three year old daughter in the 1920s, but, through his letters, this wanderlust mining engineer casts his influence to a daughter from across a continent and often from across an ocean. As Will begins to examine his grandfather´s letters, he merely figures to unearth his heritage, to learn more about his grandfather, and to garner a few family stories to share with his own ten-year-old daughter. But what he discovers is enough to change his life forever. Dear Katy, Love Dad protrays the quintessential American family of the twentieth century and examines difficult areas of the human experience. What radiates from this novel is a touching, timeless and heartwarming story about a father's love from afar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, the Japanese blockaded all the harbors along the coast of China and Burma. To get supplies into central China, the Americans, British, and their allies built the Burma Road which became the Epic Story of the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater. It was 700 miles through jungles, over mountains, and crossing streams. Some 200,000 native laborers were involved. That was Irwin Reiss' job -- recruiting local tribesmen to move dirt and build bridges by hand and limited heavy help from Caterpillar tractors. Read these letters from the jungle and from the homefront and then ask yourself why is ongoing turmoil in other parts of the world.

Book Dear Jay Love Dad

Download or read book Dear Jay Love Dad written by Jay Wilkinson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College football fans need no introduction to Bud Wilkinson, but few of them know the great University of Oklahoma football coach as a devoted father. In Dear Jay, Love Bud, Jay Wilkinson, Bud’s younger son, shares forty-seven letters his father wrote to him while he was in college and graduate school. Spanning the early to mid-1960s, these letters reveal Bud’s deep love for his son, as well as the philosophy and values that led to his remarkable success in sports and in life. Beginning with the first letter Bud wrote when Jay left home, this collection shows a father guiding his son toward his own path while stressing the importance of service to others. The embodiment of the scholar-athlete, Bud mixes encouragement with intellectual discussions. When Jay reads American philosopher William James for a class at Duke University, his father, a serious student of literature, reads the book, too, and uses its insights to help Jay deal with the challenges of his freshman year. Bud writes about his own challenges, as well, including his debate over whether to accept the Kennedy administration’s invitation to head the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. Jay’s comments about each of these letters provide context and further insight. By the time Jay becomes a graduate student at the Episcopal Theological School, the correspondence turns toward religion and politics, as Bud reflects on the philosophical issues of the day and on his unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate in 1964. His belief that the greatest leaders are not always the most popular made him an unlikely politician even then, but a wonderful role model and interlocutor for his son. Bud’s thoughts on ethics in business and politics are as inspiring today as when he wrote them a half-century ago.

Book My Cave My View

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gary Torres
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2011-10
  • ISBN : 1467067083
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book My Cave My View written by Gary Torres and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary has used a Twain-like humor with a folksy small town snapshot of life to make us stop and reconsider our own life. He opens up with humor and tenderness that will bring laughter and tears from the same page as he paints pictures of the people, places, and activities that surround him. He and his dog Turbo, his too kind and loving wife, and four children are the innocents abroad on a raft made of love, pain, laughter, and hope that is floating the mighty Mississippi of life somewhere in the West. From his experience raising kids, fighting cancer, running marathons his insights are like barbs on a fence that grab hold of you. Each section of the book contains small snippets of life and insights that make the reader pause to laugh at the character and themselves. BATTLE OF THE SEXES: There it is...one blanket, one bed, two people. It is almost certain that someone is going to be cold tonight. Oh sure, we act cordial enough, remove our slippers, plump our pillows, shake the sheets, then position the mutual blanket and snuggle in for a good night's sleep; a wonderful ending to the age old battle of the sexes. A temporary truce of sorts, can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY: "You drive me crazy." There was a time when my wife said those words, and that was a good thing. Now, when she says those words, it is with a different tone and a different meaning. It's more like, "YOU DRIVE ME CRAZY!!!" And after being married and having kids I have come to decide that it is the little things that will eventually drive a person crazy. BAGS, CHAPSTICK, AND SHOPPING: I'm sitting here in my cave, talking to my dog, Turbo. "Do ya think that we'll ever understand women?" He looked up, smiled and wagged his tail; I think he thought I said, "Would ya like a bite of my sandwich?" Whenever I talk, he must always think I say that, because he always smiles and wags his tail the same way. MYOWN EMERGENCY ROOM VISIT: Well I can tell you one thing. Don't be going to the hospital if you want to get rest and relaxation. Just about the time I would fall asleep, some nurse would come in and shake me and say, "How ya feeling? Are you getting plenty of rest? I need some more blood. This is going to sting just a tiny bit." And proceed to play pin the tail on the donkey again. Frankly, I was tired of the game and didn't want to be the donkey anymore (although many think I am a natural for the part).

Book The Best Advice I Ever Got

Download or read book The Best Advice I Ever Got written by Katie Couric and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to see how today’s best and brightest got it right, got it wrong, and came out on top. What was the tipping point for Malcolm Gladwell? What unscripted event made Meryl Streep who she is? In this inspiration-packed book, Katie Couric reports from the front lines of the worlds of politics, entertainment, sports, philanthropy, the arts, and business—distilling the ingenious, hard-won insights of leaders and visionaries, who tell us all how to take chances, follow our passions, cope with criticism, and, perhaps most important, commit to something greater than ourselves. Among the many voices to be heard here are financial guru Suze Orman on the benefits of doing what’s right, not what’s easy; director Steven Spielberg on listening rather than being listened to; quarterback Drew Brees on how his (literal) big break changed his life; and novelist Curtis Sittenfeld on the secrets of a great long-term relationship (she suggests marrying someone less neurotic than you); not to mention: • Michael Bloomberg: “Eighty percent of success is showing up . . . early.” • Eric Stonestreet: “Remember that the old lady who’s taking forever in line is someone’s grandma.” • Joyce Carol Oates: “Read widely—what you want to read, and not what someone suggests that you should read.” • Jimmy Kimmel: “When in doubt, order the hamburger.” • Apolo Ohno: “It’s not about the forty seconds; it’s about the four years, the time it took to get there.” • Madeleine K. Albright: “Never play hide-and-seek with the truth.” Along the way, Couric reflects on the good advice—and the missteps—that have guided her from her early days as a desk assistant at ABC to her groundbreaking role as the first female anchor of the CBS Evening News. She reveals how the words of Thomas Jefferson helped her deal with her husband’s tragic death from cancer, and what encouraged her to leave the security of NBC’s Today show for a new adventure at CBS. Delightful, empowering, and moving, The Best Advice I Ever Got is the perfect book for anyone who is thinking about the future, contemplating taking a risk, or daring to make a leap into the great unknown.

Book Going There

Download or read book Going There written by Katie Couric and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This heartbreaking, hilarious, and brutally honest memoir shares the deeply personal life story of a girl next door and her transformation into a household name. For more than forty years, Katie Couric has been an iconic presence in the media world. In her brutally honest, hilarious, heartbreaking memoir, she reveals what was going on behind the scenes of her sometimes tumultuous personal and professional life - a story she’s never shared, until now. Of the medium she loves, the one that made her a household name, she says, “Television can put you in a box; the flat-screen can flatten. On TV, you are larger than life but smaller, too. It is not the whole story, and it is not the whole me. This book is.” Beginning in early childhood, Couric was inspired by her journalist father to pursue the career he loved but couldn’t afford to stay in. Balancing her vivacious, outgoing personality with her desire to be taken seriously, she overcame every obstacle in her way: insecurity, an eating disorder, being typecast, sexism . . . challenges, and how she dealt with them, setting the tone for the rest of her career. Couric talks candidly about adjusting to sudden fame after her astonishing rise to co-anchor of the TODAY show, and guides us through the most momentous events and news stories of the era, to which she had a front-row seat: Rodney King, Anita Hill, Columbine, the death of Princess Diana, 9/11, the Iraq War . . . In every instance, she relentlessly pursued the facts, ruffling more than a few feathers along the way. She also recalls in vivid and sometimes lurid detail the intense pressure on female anchors to snag the latest “get”—often sensational tabloid stories like Jon Benet Ramsey, Tonya Harding, and OJ Simpson. Couric’s position as one of the leading lights of her profession was shadowed by the shock and trauma of losing her husband to stage 4 colon cancer when he was just 42, leaving her a widow and single mom to two daughters, 6 and 2. The death of her sister Emily, just three years later, brought yet more trauma—and an unwavering commitment to cancer awareness and research, one of her proudest accomplishments. Couric is unsparing in the details of her historic move to the anchor chair at the CBS Evening News—a world rife with sexism and misogyny. Her “welcome” was even more hostile at 60 Minutes, an unrepentant boys club that engaged in outright hazing of even the most established women. In the wake of the MeToo movement, Couric shares her clear-eyed reckoning with gender inequality and predatory behavior in the workplace, and downfall of Matt Lauer—a colleague she had trusted and respected for more than a decade. Couric also talks about the challenge of finding love again, with all the hilarity, false-starts, and drama that search entailed, before finding her midlife Mr. Right. Something she has never discussed publicly—why her second marriage almost didn’t happen. If you thought you knew Katie Couric, think again. Going There is the fast-paced, emotional, riveting story of a thoroughly modern woman, whose journey took her from humble origins to superstardom. In these pages, you will find a friend, a confidante, a role model, a survivor whose lessons about life will enrich your own.
