Book excerpt: If your mother had been brought up in an extended Italian family that was passionate about food, and gone on to run one of the country's most successful delicatessens, would you not want a record of all the knowledge and experience she had acquired? This book provides just that, in a form that can be shared with other families and other cooks. Addressing her daughter Francesca, Mary Contini has written not only a wonderful cook book, but also a compelling and often moving account of her family history. Informative, humorous and always passionate, this is a cookbook to read as well as to cook from day after day.

Book excerpt: Set in the early 1960s, Francesca tells the story of Colin Ferguson, an aspiring writer whose life is blighted by love. The object of his love lies always out of reach, and never more so than when he holds her in his arms. Through Francesca he is offered a vision of modern England that frightens and enthrals him: whether escaping from hers or returning, he always sees something new and unsurprising in this haunted universe. And, as the tragic story unfolds, the reader enters into a world of guilt and hesitation which, for all its strangeness, has an air of uncanny truth. The kaleidoscope of characters – Colin's father, the embittered schoolmaster, Sarah, the lesbian poetess, Harold Plumptre, the prostitute and healer – constantly shifts and reassembles, drawing the ring of fate ever tighter until the novel reaches its surprising but inevitable climax. An atmospheric work, with passages of great descriptive power, Francesca is as a remarkable novel. Its intriguing characters and breathtaking pace grip the reader from the beginning, and its narrative expresses not only the drama of the characters, but also an urgent and compelling vision of the society from which they spring, and of the destiny of any man in the condition of modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by H. H. Munro was originally published in 1912 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Unbearable Bassington' is a novel detailing the story of Comus Bassington, the only son of Francesca Bassington, and his attempt to marry a wealthy woman so as to save his mother from losing her house. Hector Hugh Munro was born in Akyab, Burma in 1870. He was raised by aunts in North Devon, England, before returning to Burma in his early twenties to join the Colonial Burmese Military Police. Later, Munro returned once more to England, where he embarked on his career as a journalist, becoming well-known for his satirical 'Alice in Westminster' political sketches, which appeared in the Westminster Gazette. Arguably better-remembered by his pen name, 'Saki', Munro is now considered a master of the short story, with tales such as 'The Open Window' regarded as examples of the form at its finest.

Book The Unbearable Bassington

Download or read book The Unbearable Bassington written by Saki and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Unbearable Bassington" by Saki (the pen-name of H. H. Munro) is one of many examples of the author's witty, bizarre, and perhaps a bit cynical writing style. An example of what were considered the typical manners and status quo in Edwardian society, "The Unbearable Bassington" is part commentary, part humor, and completely entertaining for readers of all ages and walks of life, even now, many years after its publication.

Book excerpt: The Midwives Home to Alaska. To her ex-husband. Her family. And the babies waiting to be born… Midwife Francesca Walcott has plenty of good reasons to stay away from Alaska. Her ex-husband, Charlie Marcus, for one. Her family, for another. Thirty years ago she chose to marry Charlie over her family's objections. They haven't forgiven her…or spoken to her since. Now she's come home to Alaska—because Mia, a midwife, friend and former apprentice, has been found dead. She's left Francesca her estate: a house in Talkeetna, a mine and foty-three sled dogs. Suddenly there are more reasons to stay in Alaska than to leave. The mystery surrounding Mia's death. The mothers and babies who need her skills as a midwife. The hope of reconciling with her family. And above all, Charlie. The man who's—somehow—connected to everything in her life. The man who she used to love…and still does.
