Book Unarmed and Dangerous

Download or read book Unarmed and Dangerous written by Jon Shane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is tremendous controversy across the United States (and beyond) when a police officer uses deadly force against an unarmed citizen, but often the conversation is devoid of contextual details. These details matter greatly as a matter of law and organizational legitimacy. In this short book, authors Jon Shane and Zoë Swenson offer a comprehensive analysis of the first study to use publicly available data to reveal the context in which an officer used deadly force against an unarmed citizen. Although any police shooting, even a justified shooting, is not a desired outcome—often termed "lawful but awful" in policing circles—it is not necessarily a crime. The results of this study lend support to the notion that being unarmed does not mean "not dangerous," in some ways explaining why most police officers are not indicted when such a shooting occurs. The study’s findings show that when police officers used deadly force during an encounter with an unarmed citizen, the officer or a third person was facing imminent threat of death or serious injury in the vast majority of situations. Moreover, when police officers used force, their actions were almost always consistent with the accepted legal and policy principles that govern law enforcement in the overwhelming proportion of encounters (as measured by indictments). Noting the dearth of official data on the context of police shooting fatalities, Shane and Swenson call for the U.S. government to compile comprehensive data so researchers and practitioners can learn from deadly force encounters and improve practices. They further recommend that future research on police shootings should examine the patterns and micro-interactions between the officer, citizen, and environment in relation to the prevailing law. The unique data and analysis in this book will inform discussions of police use of force for researchers, policymakers, and students involved in criminal justice, public policy, and policing.

Book In the Shadow of a Phoenix From the Ashes

Download or read book In the Shadow of a Phoenix From the Ashes written by Stacey Lloyd-Briden and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2016-06-16 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death had always walked the time worn knight's path. It had clung with an unending need, driving him into his solitude. Despair was long gone. David was tired now with a burden needing its release knowing Elowen had to understand the real story behind Arthur's success. After he and Andrew had raised their ranks in the Phoenix Order, their minds and bodies were calling for more than the tasks they were being assigned. Little did they know they would vow never to complain about mundane tasks again when they met Arread. A tale of sorcery and sorrow. A land at siege between Light and Dark, and a Prophesy burdened upon a young woman and two sons of the blade. Gallantry was an imagination grown from the smallest seed. For the promise to be fulfilled, the truth had to be told.

Book The Operating System

Download or read book The Operating System written by Eric Laursen and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do we mean when we talk about “the State”? Multiple polls show a growing disillusionment with the State and representative government as vehicles for progressive change, and particularly as means to tame capitalism, let alone as a basis for seeing beyond it. In a quick and readable format, Eric Laursen proposes thinking about the State in an entirely new way—not simply as government or legal institutions, but as humanity’s analog to a computer operating system—opening up a new interpretation of the system of governance that emerged in Europe five-hundred years ago and now drives almost every aspect of human society. He also demonstrates powerfully why humanity’s life-and-death challenges—including racism, climate change, and rising economic exploitation—cannot be addressed as long as the State continues to exercise dominion.

Download or read book Diary written by Witold Gombrowicz and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just before the outbreak of World War II, young Witold Gombrowicz left his home in Poland and set sail for South America. In 1953, still living as an expatriate in Argentina, he began his Diary with one of literature's most memorable openings: "Monday Me. Tuesday Me. Wednesday Me. Thursday Me." Gombrowicz's Diary grew to become a vast collection of essays, short notes, polemics, and confessions on myriad subjects ranging from political events to literature to the certainty of death. Not a traditional journal, Diary is instead the commentary of a brilliant and restless mind. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, this brilliant work compelled Gombrowicz's attention for a decade and a half until he penned his final entry in France, shortly before his death in 1969. Long out of print in English, Diary is now presented in a convenient single volume featuring a new preface by Rita Gombrowicz, the author's widow and literary executor. This edition also includes ten previously unpublished pages from the 1969 portion of the diary.
