Book excerpt: Harry Rusper, a trader in other people's discarded golden trinkets, has been discovered dead by his wife in their kitchen just outside Lincoln, with a claw hammer embedded in his skull. At the same time in the cathedral city, Harry's younger brother has had his home ransacked while he dined out in a local restaurant. Is the timing sheer coincidence or had Danny been at home would the same fate have come knocking on his door? Swedish born DI Inga Larsson realised right from the outset that this wasn't a run-of-the-mill domestic gone badly wrong. She knew for certain that this Harry Rusper was just as dead as any other murder victim, but with gold as a defining issue. Inga had to consider that this could very well be a case of both brothers being made to pay the price for Harry's brash dealing indiscretions. Her hunt for the killer and the truth will lead Inga down a road she could never have imagined. A road that will unleash a secret which, if revealed, would make headlines across the world.

God doesnt want His people to suffer the same hardships, so he urges us to travel down a different road. As you read this book, allow God to clean you. He wants you and I to remain on the path of righteousness, or to set us back on that path. He wants to bless us through obedience. Do you want to forever dwell in His blessings? Book Ten Stupid Things Couples Do to Mess Up Their Relationships

Download or read book Ten Stupid Things Couples Do to Mess Up Their Relationships written by Dr. Laura Schlessinger and published by Dr. Laura Schlessinger. This book was released on 2001-12-24 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever withheld information from your spouse or partner for fear of rejection? Do you feel that your own needs come before your relationship? Do you continue to cling to past relationships, even at the expense of your current one? Do you put your work first, even if it means you never see your family? Are you in a destructive relationship? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Dr. Laura has some hard truths for you to face. Dr. Laura Schlessinger is an expert on the stupid things men and women do to sabotage themselves and their happiness. In her earlier bestsellers, Ten Stupid Things Women Do to Mess Up Their Lives and Ten Stupid Things Men Do to Mess Up Their Lives, she urged her readers to take responsibility for their actions and to respect themselves and the people in their lives. Now the popular radio talk-show host tackles another difficult, complicated issue: the ways in which women and men hurt themselves and one another in their romantic relationships. Using real-life situations from her radio call-in show and from listeners' letters, Dr. Laura offers firm yet compassionate advice on how to find greater happiness in life and in love. She urges couples to set their priorities straight, learn the difference between privacy and secrecy, stop making stupid excuses for their mistakes, and face their responsibilities to each other and to their families. Too often individuals in relationships ask only what the relationship can do for them, not what they can do for the relationship. Too many people are jumping into intimate relationships before taking the time to get to know each other. In Ten Stupid Things Couples Do to Mess Up Their Relationships, Dr. Laura calls for a return to traditional courtship. Courtship allows couples and their families to get acquainted with one another over a longer period of time and provides structure and guidelines for that important process. She asks couples to take a long, hard look at the recurring problems in their marriages -- both small and large -- and doesn't hesitate to tell them what they are doing wrong and how they can fix them. This is an invaluable guide for all married couples -- newlyweds and grandparents alike -- and for single people who are struggling to find the right mate or to escape a bad relationship. Acknowledging your stupid mistakes can be difficult, but with the help of this book you will learn how to correct them and how to find fulfillment, joy, and loving companionship in your most important relationship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jealous for You: An Expose of the Love of God is a concise yet thorough look at the heart of God and his motives that would cause him to so love the world that he would give his only begotten Son to die for it. John 3:16 has been a verse of scripture used so flippantly in this day and age that it is possible that the world has become immune to it, and God himself seems to be detached from it as well. However, it is the design of the thoughts in this survey of the love and person of God to put the attention back where it belongs--on God himself. In this presentation, we discover who is this God that declares that his name is Jealous? What are the key components that has aroused his jealousy to be expressed? Why is man so important to God that he would go to such an extreme to send his only begotten Son to die on the cross of Calvary? How should we examine and evaluate what he has said and done? You should set your mind to be ready to see that which you may not have seen before and understand that which is not easily understood, as we discover why God is Jealous for you. The foundation of the thoughts of this idea of God being jealous for you is what God has said, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness and let them have dominion" (Gen. 1:26a). The creation of man from God's perspective was good and his conclusion with his desire to make man in his image to be a representation of him on earth was very good. However, because of sin, all that God had purpose for man and through man in creation was drastically destroyed. It had caused God to come to another conclusion that it had repented him that he made man because of the evil imaginations of his heart. The thoughts and judgments of God are decisive and without question as he declares who he is and the immutability of his counsel. God's exclusive right is based upon the absolute truth that he declares about himself, "I am God, and there is none else." There is no one or nothing that has an inherit right to loyalty or allegiance like God. Because of who he is and what he has declared about himself, he validates the framework of his jealousy for his creation. He is jealous for his image, his will, and his glory. Jealous for You has brought together the simplicity and truth of the scriptures, with insights that God has made known about his person to enlighten our understanding about the jealousy of God for you.

Book Jealous Gods and Chosen People

Download or read book Jealous Gods and Chosen People written by David Leeming and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esteemed scholar David Leeming, who has authored more than twelve books on mythology, here offers the first comprehensive narrative study of the mythology of the Middle East, that tumultuous region that was the cradle of civilization. Leeming begins with a brief, engaging history of the Middle East, spanning Neolithic cultures, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, the invention of writing and the rise of Egypt and Babylonia, Israel and Roman rule, and the early history of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of the mythology of the region, covering individual pantheons, cosmic myths, mythic heroes, and much more. Leeming ranges from prehistoric figures such as the Mother Goddess of Çatal Hüyük to Mesopotamian gods such as Marduk and mythic heroes such as Gilgamesh, to the pantheon of Egyptian mythology, including the falcon-headed sky-sun god Horus and jackal-headed Anubis. The author also offers an illuminating exploration of the mythology of the three great monotheistic religions of the region: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In a provocative Epilogue, Leeming depicts today's crisis in the Middle East as "violent, clearly immoral, and illegal actions" justified by "what can only be called myths." He notes that fundamentalists in the area's three religions all see their way as the only way, forgetting that myths represent truths that are spiritual and philosophical--not historical events that can be used to justify acts of violence. With key maps, illustrations, bibliography, and index, Jealous Gods and Chosen People provides an inclusive, authoritative, and captivating account of a mythology that remains a potent--and often destructive--force in the world today.

Lévi-Strauss critiques psychoanalytic interpretation and defends the interpretive powers of structuralism. "Electrifying. . . . A brilliant demonstration of structural analysis in action. . . . Download or read book A Night at the Opera written by Sir Denis Forman and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 980 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Delightful and anti-reverential”—Sunday Times (London) With an encyclopedic knowledge of opera and a delightful dash of irreverence, Sir Denis Forman throws open the world of opera—its structure, composers, conductors, and artists—in this hugely informative guide. A Night at the Opera dissects the eighty-three most popular operas recorded on compact disc, from Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. For each opera, Sir Denis details the plot and cast of characters, awarding stars to parts that are “worth looking out for,” “really good,” or, occasionally, “stunning.” He goes on to tell the history of each opera and its early reception. Finally, each work is graded from alpha to gamma (although the Ring cycle gets an “X”), and Sir Denis has no qualms about voicing his opinion: the first act of Fidelio is “a bit of a mess,” while the last scene of Don Giovanni “towers above the comic finales of Figaro and Così and whether or not [it] is Mozart's greatest opera, it is certainly his most powerful finale.” The guide also presents brief biographies of the great composers, conductors, and singers. A glossary of musical terms is included, as well as Operatica, or the essential elements of opera, from the proper place and style of the audience's applause (and boos) to the use of subtitles. A Night at the Opera is for connoisseurs and neophytes alike. It will entertain and inform, delight and (perhaps) infuriate, providing a subject for lively debate and ready reference for years to come.
