Book De Libero Arbitrio diatribe Sive Collatic Hyperaspistes 1 Volume 76

Download or read book De Libero Arbitrio diatribe Sive Collatic Hyperaspistes 1 Volume 76 written by Desiderius Erasmus and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erasmus' controversies with French, Italian, Spanish, and German critics on theological, social, philological, educational, and other matters are contained in volumes 71-84 of the Collected Works of Erasmus. Volume 76 includes two of his most important disputes with Luther, A Discussion of Free Will and the first part of Hyperaspistes (usually translated as 'protector' or 'shield-bearer'). Erasmus writes in response to Luther's The Enslaved Will and rebukes Luther for his arrogance and for his insulting charge that Erasmus is an atheist. In these works, Erasmus sets out in detail his views on important questions of scripture and church doctrine and tradition in his eloquent defence of free will. A masterly introduction by Professor Trinkaus provides the necessary background for the reader's understanding and appreciation of the struggle between Erasmus and Luther. The second part of Hyperaspistes appears in volume 77, as does the index to both volumes 76 and 77.

Book The Tragedy of Human Freedom

Download or read book The Tragedy of Human Freedom written by Martien E. Brinkman and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human freedom has been the source of both the high points of humanity as well as of its low points, thus giving rise to the impression that it is a somewhat ambivalent concept. According to Martien Brinkman, the major factor in this ambivalence is the rather narrow meaning that the concept has received in the course of history. Freedom is, for the most part, understood as 'freedom from' or 'freedom to' but only rarely as 'freedom for'. However, it is precisely this latter understanding that is closest to the Christian understanding of freedom, which Brinkman defines as 'internal attachment'. In his view Christian freedom is at bottom characterized by that to which one commits oneself in trust. He sees primarily the Christian theology of baptism, with its accent on 'dying' and 'rising' with Christ as the model for the way in which one acquires freedom. Brinkman illustrates this in this study by means of a great number of biblical images and images borrowed from the historical debates between Augustine and Pelagius and Luther and Erasmus.

Book Humanism and the Rhetoric of Toleration

Download or read book Humanism and the Rhetoric of Toleration written by Gary Remer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious toleration is much discussed these days. But where did the Western notion of toleration come from? In this thought-provoking book Gary Remer traces arguments for religious toleration back to the Renaissance, demonstrating how humanist thinkers initiated an intellectual tradition that has persisted even to our present day. Although toleration has long been recognized as an important theme in Renaissance humanist thinking, many scholars have mistakenly portrayed the humanists as proto-Englightenment rationalists and nascent liberals. Remer, however, offers the surprising conclusion that humanist thinking on toleration was actually founded on the classical tradition of rhetoric. It was the rhetorician's commitment to decorum, the ability to argue both sides of an issue, and the search for an acceptable epistemological standard in probability and consensus that grounded humanist arguments for toleration. Remer also finds that the primary humanist model for a full-fledged theory of toleration was the Ciceronian rhetorical category of sermo (conversation). The historical scope of this book is wide-ranging. Remer begins by focusing on the works of four humanists: Desiderius Erasmus, Jacobus Acontius, William Chillingworth, and Jean Bodin. Then he considers the challenge posed to the humanist defense of toleration by Thomas Hobbes and Pierre Bayle. Finally, he shows how humanist ideas have continued to influence arguments for toleration even after the passing of humanism&—from John Locke to contemporary American discussions of freedom of speech.
