Book A History of the Christian Church From the Earliest Times to A D 461

Download or read book A History of the Christian Church From the Earliest Times to A D 461 written by F. J. Foakes-Jackson and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of long truces and temporary agreements, Christianity and the State had become two rival powers striving for the mastery of the world, and until the close of the final contest under Diocletian there could be no real peace between them. The Church was herself fully prepared for the struggle. During the first century of her existence she had perfected her organization, and her leaders, the bishops, had obtained unquestioned authority. -from "The Conquest of Heathenism by Christianity: A.D. 161-A.D. 313" With equal measures of reverence and erudition, this classic 1891 history of Christianity offers a succinct survey of the Church, from its pre-Christian foundations in Israel through its ascendency to an absolute force for cultural and religious power during the Dark Ages. In crisp, readable prose, Foakes-Jackson, a respected and prolific Biblical scholar, discusses: -how Jewish synagogues forged the path to churches -the rise of the family of Herod -the societal impact of Jesus during his lifetime -the work of the apostles in the decades after the Crucifixion -clashes between the Roman government and the Church -the origins and principles of Gnosticism -Christian thought in the early centuries of the Church -the organization of the Church -the influence of Constantine -and much more. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Foakes-Jackson's A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament. British theologian FREDERICK JOHN FOAKES-JACKSON (1855-1941) was a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, and a professor of Christian institutions at New York City's Union Theological Seminary. Among his many works are An Introduction to the History of Christianity, A.D. 590-1314 (1921), Josephus and theJews: The Religion and History of the Jews as Explained by Flavius Josephus (1930), and Peter: Prince of Apostles: A Study in the History and Tradition of Christianity (1927).

Book We Are Who We Think We Were

Download or read book We Are Who We Think We Were written by Aaron D. Conley and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conley calls into question the outdated historical methodologies in use in Christian social ethics and outlines the consequences stemming from them. By adopting the postmodern post-structuralist position of historian Elizabeth Clark, Conley calls ethicists to learn to read for the gaps, silences, and aporias existent in historical texts as well as in the histories represented by them. The book calls ethicists to a critical self-reflexive historiography. This self-criticism allows the ability to construct new histories and formulate new ethical norms for the world in which we now live.

Book The Selected Works of Tertullian Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus

Download or read book The Selected Works of Tertullian Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus written by Tertullian and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 1632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WE are accustomed, for the purpose of shortening argument, to lay down the rule against heretics of the lateness of their date. For in as far as by our rule, priority is given to the truth, which also foretold that there would be heresies, in so far must all later opinions be prejudged as heresies, being such as were, by the more ancient rule of truth, predicted as (one day) to happen. Now, the doctrine of Hermogenes has this taint of novelty. He is, in short, a man living in the world at the present time; by his very nature a heretic, and turbulent withal, who mistakes loquacity for eloquence, and supposes impudence to be firmness, and judges it to be the duty of a good conscience to speak ill of individuals. Moreover, he despises God’s law in his painting, maintaining repeated marriages, alleges the law of God in defence of lust, and yet despises it in respect of his art. He falsities by a twofold process—with his cautery and his pen. He is a thorough adulterer, both doctrinally and carnally, since he is rank indeed with the contagion of your marriage-hacks, and has also failed in cleaving to the rule of faith as much as the apostle’s own Hermogenes. However, never mind the man, when it is his doctrine which I question. He does not appear to acknowledge any other Christ as Lord, though he holds Him in a different way; but by this difference in his faith he really makes Him another being,—nay, he takes from Him everything which is God, since he will not have it that He made all things of nothing. For, turning away from Christians to the philosophers, from the Church to the Academy and the Porch, he learned there from the Stoics how to place Matter (on the same level) with the Lord, just as if it too had existed ever both unborn and unmade, having no beginning at all nor end, out of which, according to him, the Lord afterwards created all things.

Book Early Christian Discourses on Jesus Prayer at Gethsemane

Download or read book Early Christian Discourses on Jesus Prayer at Gethsemane written by Karl Olav Sandnes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From early on, Christians passed down the account of Jesus’s agony at the prospect of his own death and his prayer that the cup should pass from him (Gethsemane). Yet, this is a troublesome aspect of Christian tradition. Jesus was committed to his death, but as it approached, he prayed for his escape, even as he submitted himself to God’s will. Ancient critics mocked Jesus and his followers for the events at Gethsemane. The ‘hero’ failed to meet the cultural standards for noble death and masculinity. As such, this story calls for further reflection and interpretation. The present book unfolds discourses from the earliest centuries of Christianity to determine what strategies were developed to come to terms with Gethsemane.
