Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book equips both lawyer and historian with a complete history of Roman law, from its beginnings c.1000 BC through to its re-discovery in Europe where it was widely applied until the eighteenth century. Combining a law specialist’s informed perspective of legal history with a socio-political and cultural focus, it examines the sources of law, the ways in which these laws were applied and enforced, and the ways the law was influenced and progressed, with an exploration of civil and criminal procedures and special attention paid to legal science. The final chapter covers the history of Roman law in late antiquity and appraises the move towards the codification of law that culminated in the final statement of Roman law: the Corpus Iuris Civilis of Emperor Justinian. Throughout the book, George Mousourakis highlights the relationship between Roman law and Roman life by following the lines of the major historical developments. Including bibliographic references and organized accessibly by historical era, this book is an excellent introduction to the history of Roman law for students of both law and ancient history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reprint of the sole edition. "This is an important, erudite, and difficult book. The author, who is of the school of institutional economists, has undertaken to analyze 'the structure only of that particular social organization and institution which is called property', not merely in its legal aspects but also with respect to the underlying economic facts of the institution today. (...) Those who will make the effort requisite to an understanding of this book will be well repaid.": Sidney Post Simpson, Harvard Law Review 49 (1935-36) 1211-16.

Book Roman State Christian Church Volume 3

Download or read book Roman State Christian Church Volume 3 written by P. R. Coleman-Norton and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of legal documents affecting the Christian Church in the Roman Empire is the first its kind in any language. In time the monuments here translated cover the period from the foundation of the Church to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor in the West (476), and to the publication of the second (and only extant) edition of the Code of Justinian I, the most conspicuous champion of Caesaropapism in the East (534)—each terminus ad quem being an arbitrary, but a natural, limit. The character of the originals, which are mostly in either Greek or Latin, is strictly secular, that is, the documents emanate from the State’s officials, ordinarily the emperors, and thus expose the State’s attitude toward the Church. —From the Introduction

Book Nominalization in Latin

Download or read book Nominalization in Latin written by Olga Spevak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is devoted to verbal nouns, defined as nouns which have a systematic correspondence with a clause structure. This book aims to contribute to the much-debated question of "abstract nouns" in general and "verbal derivatives" in particular by showing that syntactic parameters are useful for a better classification of what are traditionally called nomina actionis. It adopts a descriptive approach and it provides methods and criteria for identifying these nouns, which retain some verbal properties and for distinguishing them from nouns with concrete reference. This distinction is important for a better understanding of Latin texts and for the presentation of these words in dictionaries. This book investigates the use of verbal nouns in various text types: narrative texts and technical treatises (rhetoric, architecture, and legal texts). It shows that verbal nouns, as well as gerunds, gerundives, participles in participial clauses, and partly also infinitives, are competing expressions with a low "sententiality" that serve, to different extents, to condensate clausal expressions. They form a system, in which the elements are partly overlapping and partly complementary. The fact that Latin does not have a verbal noun available for every verb should not be viewed as a "deficiency", but as a facet of this complex system"--
