Book David Copperfield s History of Magic

Download or read book David Copperfield s History of Magic written by David Copperfield and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this personal journey through a unique performing art, David Copperfield profiles some of the world's most groundbreaking magicians. From the sixteenth-century magistrate who wrote an early book on conjuring, to the roaring twenties and the man who fooled Houdini, to the woman who levitated, vanished, and caught bullets in her bare hands, David Copperfield's History of Magic takes you on a wild journey through the remarkable feats of some of the greatest magicians in history. The result is a sweeping tale that reveals how these astonishing performers were outsiders who used magic to escape class, challenge conventions, transform popular culture, explore the innermost workings of the human mind, and inspire scientific discovery. Their incredible stories are complemented by more than 100 never-before-seen photographs of artifacts from Copperfield's exclusive Museum of Magic, including a sixteenth-century manual on sleight-of-hand; Houdini's straitjackets, handcuffs, and water torture chamber; Dante's famous sawing-in-half apparatus; Alexander's high-tech turban that allowed him to read people's minds; and even some coins that may have magically passed through the hands of Abraham Lincoln. By the end of the book, you'll be sure to share Copperfield's passion for the power of magic. --

Book David Copperfield with an Introduction by Edwin Percy Whipple

Download or read book David Copperfield with an Introduction by Edwin Percy Whipple written by Charles Dickens and published by Digireads.com. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The captivating story of an innocent boy alone in an uncaring society, David Copperfield is unquestionably the most autobiographical of all Charles Dickens's novels. Born in bleak 19th-century London, David Copperfield's life is shaped by his struggle for survival, starting with his menacing stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. His friendship with the blustering, jovial Mr. Micawber adds hilarity and warmth to his otherwise dismal days, while the sinister, sniveling clerk Uriah Heep is an endless source of both amusement and revulsion. As David grows up, he is torn between his fascination with the beautiful, spoiled Dora and his devotion to his childhood friend Agnes. An unforgettable portrayal of childhood, David Copperfield's message of hope and determination amidst life's harsh realities makes this story one of Dickens's greatest masterpieces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Striding Place is a horror short story written by Gertrude Atherton and first published in 1896. Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton (October 30, 1857 - June 14, 1948) was a prominent and prolific American author, many of whose novels are based in her home state, California. Her best-seller Black Oxen (1923) was made into a silent movie of the same name. In addition to novels, she wrote short stories, essays, and articles for magazines and newspapers on such issues as feminism, politics, and war. She was strong-willed, independent-minded, and sometimes controversial. Atherton's first publication was "The Randolphs of Redwood: A Romance," serialized in The Argonaut in March 1882 under the pseudonym Asmodeus. When she revealed to her family that she was the author, it caused her to be ostracized. In 1888, she left for New York, leaving Muriel with her grandmother. She traveled to London, and eventually returned to California. Atherton's first novel, What Dreams May Come, was published in 1888 under the pseudonym Frank Lin. In 1889, she went to Paris at the invitation of her sister-in-law Alejandra Rathbone (married to Major Jared Lawrence Rathbone). That year, she heard from British publisher G. Routledge and Sons that they would publish her first two books. William Sharp wrote in The Spectator praising her fiction and would later invite Atherton to stay with him and his wife, Elizabeth, in South Hampstead. In London, she had the opportunity through Jane Wilde to meet Oscar Wilde, her son. She recalled in her memoir Adventures of a Novelist (1932) that she made an excuse to avoid the meeting because she thought he was physically repulsive. In an 1899 article for London's Bookman, Atherton wrote of Wilde's style and associated it with "the decadence, the loss of virility that must follow over-civilization."

Book excerpt: David Copperfield is the eighth novel by Charles Dickens. It was first published as a book in 1850. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of his novels. In the preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens wrote, "like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield." The story traces the life of David Copperfield from childhood to maturity. David was born in Blunderstone, Suffolk, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, in 1820, six months after the death of his father. David spends his early years in relative happiness with his loving but frail mother and their kindly housekeeper, Peggotty. When he is seven years old his mother marries Edward Murdstone. David is given good reason to dislike his stepfather and has similar feelings for Murdstone's sister Jane, who moves into the house soon afterwards. Murdstone attempts to thrash David for falling behind in his studies. David bites him and soon afterwards is sent away to a boarding school, Salem House, with a ruthless headmaster, Mr. Creakle. The novel has been adapted into several plays and for the screen at least twelve times.

Book excerpt: Hugely admired by Tolstoy, David Copperfield is the novel that draws most closely from Charles Dickens's own life. Its eponymous hero, orphaned as a boy, grows up to discover love and happiness, heartbreak and sorrow amid a cast of eccentrics, innocents, and villains. Praising Dickens's power of invention, Somerset Maugham wrote: "There were never such people as the Micawbers, Peggotty and Barkis, Traddles, Betsey Trotwood and Mr. Dick, Uriah Heep and his mother. They are fantastic inventions of Dickens's exultant imagination...you can never quite forget them." This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition includes a new Introduction by Pulitzer Prize finalist David Gates, in addition to new explanatory notes.

Book excerpt: "Charles Dickens' beloved masterpiece is recreated for the stage with the unforgettable characters and enthralling story of the famous original. Young David Copperfield has a happy childhood until his widowed mother weds the stern Mr. Murdstone, who separates David from his caring nurse, Peggotty, and sends him to school far away. When Mrs. Copperfield dies, little David must make his way in London. Helped by the merry Micawber family and his eccentric aunt, Betsey Trotwood, David grows up to become a writer. But even his adult years are challenged by the conniving clerk Uriah Heep, his betraying friend James Steerforth, and others. David gets to wed Dora, whom he worships, but their marriage is also challenged, and Dora's premature death leads David to discover his true character and position in life. Among the other memorable Dickens characters to appear are crusty but determined Dan Peggotty; nerdy but faithful friend Tom Traddles; vicious spinster Miss Murdstone; simple-minded but lovable Mr. Dick; understanding Agnes Wickfield; tragic Emily; vengeful Miss Dartle; and honest and selfless fisherman, Ham."--Publisher's website.
