Book excerpt: Edward Stratemeyer (1862-1930) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was an American publisher and writer of books for children. He wrote 150 books himself, and created the most famous of the series books for juveniles, including the Rover Boys (1899 and after), Bobbsey Twins (1904), Tom Swift (1910), Hardy Boys (1927), and Nancy Drew (1930) series, among others. Stratemeyer pioneered the technique of producing long-running, consistent series of books using a team of freelance authors to write standardised novels, which were published under a pen name owned by his company. Through his Stratemeyer Syndicate, founded in 1906, Stratemeyer produced short plot summaries for the novels in each series, which he sent to other writers who completed the story. Stratemeyer's series were also innovative in that they were intended purely as entertainment, with little of the moral lessons or educational intent found in most other popular fiction of the early twentieth century. Stratemeyer's series included, besides the famous ones, many that are now forgotten except by collectors: The Motor Boys (1906), Honey Bunch (1923), The Blythe Girls (1925) and Bomba the Jungle Boy (1926).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dave Porter in the Gold Fields: Or the Search for the Landslide Mine Dave porter IN the gold fields is a complete story in itself, but forms the tenth volume in a line issued under the general title of Dave Porter Series. The series was begun some years ago by the publication of Dave Porter at Oak Hall, in which my young readers were introduced to a typical American lad at a typical American board ing school. There was at that time a cloud over Dave's parentage, and to clear this away he took a long sea voyage, as related in the next volume, entitled Dave Porter in the South Seas. Then he came back to school, as told of in Dave Porter's Return to School, in which he gave one of the local bullies a much-needed lesson. During a vacation Dave journeyed to Norway, as related in Dave Porter in the Far North, and then came back to Oak Hall, to win various honors, as recorded in Dave Porter and His Classmates. Then came an opportunity to visit the West, and how our hero did this is set down in the book called Dave Porter at Star Ranch. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sunbridge Girls at Six Star Ranch: Large Print By Eleanor H. Porter The Reverend Thomas Wilson's sister, Miss Sophronia, had come to Sunbridge on a Tuesday evening late in June to make her brother's family a long-promised visit. But it was not until the next morning that she heard something that sent her to her sister-in-law in a burst of astonishment almost too great for words. "For pity's sake, Mary, what is this I hear?" she demanded. "Edith insists that her cousin, Cordelia, is going to Texas next week-to Texas!-Cordelia!" "Yes, she is, Sophronia," replied the minister's wife, trying to make her answer sound as cheerful and commonplace as she could, and as if Texas were in the next room. (It was something of a trial to Mrs. Thomas Wilson that her husband's sister could not seem to understand that she, a minister's wife for eighteen years and the mother of five children, ought to know what was proper and right for her orphaned niece to do-at least fully as much as should a spinster, who had never brought up anything but four cats and a parrot!) "Edith is quite right. Cordelia is going to Texas next week." "But, Mary, are you crazy? To let a child like that go all the way from here to Texas-one would think New Hampshire and Texas were twenty miles apart!" Mrs. Wilson sighed a little wearily. "Cordelia isn't exactly a child, Sophronia, you must remember that. She was sixteen last November; and she's very self-reliant and capable for her age, too. Besides, she isn't going alone, you know." "Alone!" exclaimed Miss Sophronia. "Mary, surely, the rest that Edith said isn't true! Those other girls aren't going, too, are they?-Elsie Martin, and that flyaway Tilly Mack, and all?" "I think they are, Sophronia." We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
