Book Handbook Of Climate Change And Agroecosystems The Agricultural Model Intercomparison And Improvement Project Agmip Integrated Crop And Economic Assessments Joint Publication With Asa Cssa And Sssa In 2 Parts

Download or read book Handbook Of Climate Change And Agroecosystems The Agricultural Model Intercomparison And Improvement Project Agmip Integrated Crop And Economic Assessments Joint Publication With Asa Cssa And Sssa In 2 Parts written by Daniel Hillel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 1159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Top agricultural scientists from around the world have taken up the challenge of sustainable agriculture, with the specific focus on integrating agronomic, climatological, biophysical and socio-economic perspectives and processes. Every chapter (of the Handbook) contributes to addressing the growing food-security challenges facing the world.”Foreword by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia UniversityClimate effects on agriculture are of increasing concern in both the scientific and policy communities because of the growing population and the greater uncertainty in the weather during growing seasons. Changes in production are directly linked to variations in temperature and precipitation during the growing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of soil water storage to replenish the soil profile. This is not an isolated problem but one of worldwide interest because each country has concerns about their food security. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) was developed to evaluate agricultural models and intercompare their ability to predict climate impacts. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, South America and East Asia, AgMIP regional research teams (RRTs) are conducting integrated assessments to improve understanding of agricultural impacts of climate change (including biophysical and economic impacts) at national and regional scales. Other AgMIP initiatives include global gridded modeling, data and information technology (IT) tool development, simulation of crop pests and diseases, site-based crop-climate sensitivity studies, and aggregation and scaling.

Book Meteorology at the Millennium

Download or read book Meteorology at the Millennium written by Royal Meteorological Society (Great Britain) and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meteorology at the Millennium details recent advances in meteorology and explores its interfaces with science, technology, and society. Ways in which modern meteorology is contributing to the developments in other sciences are described, as well as how atmospheric scientists are learning from colleagues in related disciplines. Meteorology at the Millennium will serve as a point of reference for students and researchers of meteorology and climatology for many years to come. The areas covered include weather prediction at the millennium, climate variability and change, atmosphere-ocean coupling, the biogeochemical system, weather on other planets. This book is a compilation of the best invited papers presented at a conference celebrating the 150 years of the Royal Meteorological Society (RMS).

Book Forest Water Interactions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Delphis F. Levia
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2020-02-05
  • ISBN : 3030260860
  • Pages : 629 pages

Download or read book Forest Water Interactions written by Delphis F. Levia and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations has declared 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development. This is a timely designation. In an increasingly thirsty world, the subject of forest-water interactions is of critical importance to the achievement of sustainability goals. The central underlying tenet of this book is that the hydrologic community can conduct better science and make a more meaningful impact to the world’s water crisis if scientists are: (1) better equipped to utilize new methods and harness big data from either or both high-frequency sensors and long-term research watersheds; and (2) aware of new developments in our process-based understanding of the hydrological cycle in both natural and urban settings. Accordingly, this forward-looking book delves into forest-water interactions from multiple methodological, statistical, and process-based perspectives (with some chapters featuring data sets and open-source R code), concluding with a chapter on future forest hydrology under global change. Thus, this book describes the opportunities of convergence in high-frequency sensing, big data, and open source software to catalyze more comprehensive understanding of forest-water interactions. The book will be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in an array of disciplines, including hydrology, forestry, ecology, botany, and environmental engineering.

Book Methods in Ecosystem Science

    Book Details:
  • Author : Osvaldo E. Sala
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-12-01
  • ISBN : 1461212243
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Methods in Ecosystem Science written by Osvaldo E. Sala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology at the ecosystem level has both necessitated and benefited from new methods and technologies as well as those adapted from other disciplines. With the ascendancy of ecosystem science and management, the need has arisen for a comprehensive treatment of techniques used in this rapidly-growing field. Methods in Ecosystem Science answers that need by synthesizing the advantages, disadvantages and tradeoffs associated with the most commonly used techniques in both aquatic and terrestrial research. The book is divided into sections addressing carbon and energy dynamics, nutrient and water dynamics, manipulative ecosystem experiements and tools to synthesize our understanding of ecosystems. Detailed information about various methods will help researchers choose the most appropriate methods for their particular studies. Prominent scientists discuss how tools from a variety of disciplines can be used in ecosystem science at different scales.
