Book Data Acquisition for Water Quality Control

Download or read book Data Acquisition for Water Quality Control written by Christopher Bryan and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clean water is vital for almost all life, which means it is essential to be able to monitor Earth's waterways to detect and prevent pollution. Measuring water quality is a common task during environmental research. Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is the major facility to process the wastewater to protect the ecosystem and public health. However, current wastewater treatment processes are energy intensive with high energy demand associated with aeration, pumping, and addition of external chemicals for process control. The ability to automate data acquisition will facilitate the precise control of the wastewater treatment systems to improve the system stability and save energy. An open-source embedded platform is designed to collect, control, and manage data from the wastewater treatment system. A BeagleBone Black Wireless board is used as the embedded system to automate data acquisition. A user-interface that can control the system is created using LabVIEW. The main design choices made during the construction of the data acquisition system and the reasoning behind them are explained. In addition, flow charts are included that explain the dataflow used in the BeagleBone board and LabVIEW. The fully integrated system was tested using samples of various pH values. The system can serve as a foundation for a future data acquisition system which supports water quality control, machine learning to detect trends, and 5G communication for remote monitoring. Machine learning capacity is able to predict changes in water quality and aid the decision-making on the LabVIEW interface, which would provide a valuable improvement to the traditional wastewater treatment control system. The platform is designed with the ability to be scaled up to collect more generate larger datasets in the future.

Book Design of Water Quality Monitoring Systems

Download or read book Design of Water Quality Monitoring Systems written by Robert C. Ward and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1991-01-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design of Water Quality Monitoring Systems Design of Water Quality Monitoring Systems presents a state-of-the-art approach to designing a water quality monitoring system that gets consistently valid results. It seeks to provide a strong scientific basis for monitoring that will enable readers to establish cost-effective environmental programs. The book begins by reviewing the evolution of water quality monitoring as an information system, and then defines water quality monitoring as a system, following the flow of information through six major components: sample collection, laboratory analysis, data handling, data analysis, reporting, and information utilization. The importance of statistics in obtaining useful information is discussed next, followed by the presentation of an overall approach to designing a total water quality information system. This sets the stage for a thorough examination of the quantification of information expectations, data analysis, network design, and the writing of the final design report. Several case studies describe the efforts of various organizations and individuals to design water quality monitoring systems using many of the concepts discussed here. A helpful summary and final system design checklist are also provided. Design of Water Quality Monitoring Systems will be an essential working tool for a broad range of managers, environmental scientists, chemists, toxicologists, regulators, and public officials involved in monitoring water quality. The volume will also be of great interest to professionals in government, industry, and academia concerned with establishing sound environmental programs.
