Book excerpt: In this dissertation we consider a number of topical issues in physics beyond the standard model. Motivated by null results from superpartner searches and the tentative Higgs boson signal at mh[subscript], [approximate] 125 GeV, we consider the framework of focus point supersymmetry. Within the focus point framework we examine models in which the neutralino is a thermal relic which saturates the observed dark matter relic density, and generalize the results for dark matter direct detection to generic models with heavy scalars. We also extend the original focus point framework to the case of non-zero A-terms, allowing models in which mh[subscript], [approximate] 125 GeV can be achieved with only 1% fine-tuning in the weak scale. We also consider formal aspects of anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking, in particular a recent derivation of anomaly-mediated soft masses using the full supergravity framework and its relation to the original derivation. Finally, we examine models in which recent contradictory results from light dark matter experiments can be partially explained by relaxing the common assumption of equal couplings to protons and neutrons.

Book excerpt: We show that the isocurvature perturbations imply that the gravitationally produced superheavy dark matter must have masses larger than few times the Hubble expansion rate at the end of inflation. This together with the bound on tensor to scalar contribution to the CMB induces a lower bound on the reheating temperature for superheavy dark matter to be about 107 GeV. Hence, if the superheavy dark matter scenario is embedded in supergravity models with gravity mediated SUSY breaking, the gravitino bound will squeeze this scenario. Furthermore, the CMB constraint strengthens the statement that gravitationally produced superheavy dark matter scenario prefers a relatively large tensor mode amplitude if the reheating temperature must be less than 109 GeV.

Book excerpt: The Fourth HEIDELBERG International Conference on Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics, DARK2002, was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in the period 4-9 February 2002. This majestic natural area was the site of the first conference of this series (hosted since 1996 in Heidelberg) to be held outside of Germany. Dark Matter has become one of the most exciting and central fields of as trophysics, particle physics and cosmology. The conference covered, as usual for this series, a large range of topics, theoretical and experimental. Topics included Astronomical Evidence for Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Supersymmetry, Inflation and Dark Energy, Structure Formation, Hot and Cold Dark Matter, and Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays all of which were represented by experts in the field. It was very nice to see again many of our 'old' friends in Dark Matter here in South Africa. The organizers were very glad to see, in addition to world experts, the new generation here. Many young participants gave very nice professional talks during the conference. We are grateful to John Ellis for doing an incredible job preparing his excellent summary talk during the sessions. Some special interest and intensive discussions were naturally raised by the first announcement of terrestrial evidence for hot dark matter, obtained from neutrino less double beta decay. This now adds to the evidence for cold dark matter which we have from DAM A for several years already, and which remained unchallenged up to now by other experiments.

Book excerpt: Theories in which neutrino masses are generated by a conventional see-saw mechanism generically yield masses which are O(v[sup 2]) in units where M[sub Pl] = 1, which is naively too small to explain the results from SuperKamiokande. In supersymmetric theories with gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking, the fundamental small parameter is not v/M[sub Pl], but m[sub I]/M[sub Pl], where m[sub I] is the scale of supersymmetry breaking in the hidden sector. We note that m[sub I][sup 3]/M[sub Pl][sup 2] is only slightly too large to explain SuperKamiokande, and present two models that achieve neutrino masses at this order in m[sub I], one of which has an additional suppression [lambda][sub [tau]][sup 2], while the other has additional suppression arising from a loop factor. The latter model shares a great deal of phenomenology with a class of models previously explored, including the possibility of viable sneutrino dark matter.

In the first model, we study the phenomenology of deflected mirage mediation, a scenario where gravity, anomaly, and gauge mediation contribute to the soft masses, in light of the 7 and 8 TeV runs of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the dark matter direct detection results from XENON and LUX. We find that the parameter space admits models with both simplified and compressed spectra, which should be visible in the next run of the LHC. We also look at the parameter space from the bottom up, using the electroweak fine-tuning measure and find that there are large regions of parameter space which are not fine-tuned. In the second, we look at models of flavored gauge mediation and explore models with a non-abelian flavor symmetry. In these models the MSSM messenger Yukawa couplings are connected by the non-abelian symmetry, forcing us to model them simultaneously. We comment on the spectra and model building challengers in this paradigm.

Book excerpt: In conventional models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking, the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) is invariably the gravitino. However, if the supersymmetry breaking sector is strongly coupled, conformal sequestering may raise the mass of the gravitino relative to the remaining soft supersymmetry-breaking masses. In this letter, we demonstrate that such conformal dynamics in gauge-mediated theories may give rise to satisfactory neutralino dark matter while simultaneously solving the flavor and [mu]/B[mu] problems.

Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to address two outstanding issues in the Standard Model of particle physics. The first of these two has to do with the lack of a viable dark matter candidate in the Standard Model. Many recent experimental results hint at the possibility of a light dark matter particle. If it is light enough, one may consider producing these particles at colliders. Parts of this thesis considers effective theories of dark matter as a way to develop a language to compare collider searches for dark matter to direct and indirect detection experiments. The second of these two issues explores the more aesthetic problem of the gauge hierarchy through construction of supersymmetry breaking models. In the first set of models, we construct UV completions of O'Raifeartaigh-like models which spontaneously break R symmetry. In the final chapter, we construct a R symmetric GMSB model in which we use Seiberg dynamics to generate supersoft Dirac gaugino masses.
